I agree. I liked her because she was proud to be who she was, which you can be without aggressively attacking and ghosting everyone who dares to say they’re not comfortable in their own body.

I was surprised she got married actually.

She says she deletes and unfollows because she loves herself too much to read weight loss content. I actually think it’s probably the opposite.

Being snobby and mean will only get you so far. I saw CharlotteBhc the other day slagging her off about getting book deals and only hanging out with other fat girls who also went to private school

I really like CBHC tbh she doesn’t give a fuuuck and has a nice little biz / tbh life. She’s the only one of that set that isn’t an #influencer though which is probably why she’s still normal...

He's just a steward at the Barbican (and presumably fancies himself as an artist) so I doubt he contributes much, money-wise. They seem very happy but I just wish he'd shave his head, he wouldn't even be bad looking if he did. As it is, he just looks contrived and ridiculous.

And yeah, it's always been blatantly obvious that BR is loaded, even up to how she talks about her mum's posh cooking. That's part of what annoys me about her relentless political posturing: it's easy to be the leftest of all lefts when you're minted (I am super liberal btw, I just find rich people who tell poorer people how they should be socialist slightly odd).

I’ve always found the sex work stuff really hard to swallow from her, I’m not a SWERF there’s a lot to say about the whole thing that I won’t get into here, but...... it’s really easy to advocate for these things when your kids will never be in that position. Jemima will be a social media manager for Vice or something, so she’s fine? They always talk about a small % of sex workers active on Twitter and not the fact care leavers / DV and other abuse survivors are hugely over represented in SW populations. I think it was around that era I unfollowed her because she hasn’t a clue.

I really like BR, a lot of her politics align with my own but agree she can be extremely militant. I noticed she’d unfollowed Poppy Adams after the weight loss surgery announcement. Have been interested to know what happened between her and Charlotte BHC for a while, also Dawn Foster? They haven’t followed each other for ages but I know they used to live together so wonder what happened there!

Her book was going for 99p on Amazon so I downloaded it. Super stressed at work at the moment so fancied light escapism. I am struggggling to get past the first chapter. It feels very overwritten so far. Lots of long never ending sentences that are too drawn out and exposition-y.

I know this issue goes far beyond just Bethany - but it’s exhausting to see book deals constantly handed to people just because they have an online platform and sometimes write decent/funny takes on Twitter.com.

Maybe it gets much more interesting further down the line, but that first chapter is meant to draw me in! So considering how flat it feels I don’t have huge hopes…

she’s lost a load of weight but I think ppl saying she’s a size 14 are losing perspective a bit. Girl is tall and knows her angles. I saw her in person in central london like last year or something pre weight loss and she was a LOT LOT bigger than photos made her appear. I personally reckon she’s prob about an 18 now, I’m sure she’ll get smaller still but I reckon she can just about call herself plus sized now.

I generally like Bethany's taste in books but I listened to one episode of WPAYO and thought it was unbearable. It was their best of the decade list - they hadn't prepared their list before recording and spent half the time trying to agree on their picks and also included a book from 2006? Not to mention Bethany sounds utterly posh and uninterested in everything, even when she's saying she loves a book she has zero enthusiasm.

I remember this episode... it was particularly bad. In fairness to them, they’re much more organised these days. I wish she would stop talking about the crimson petal and the white / the silence of the lambs / “friend of the pool Elizabeth McNeil or Will who lives in the forest etc. We get it, Bethany. You know other famous writers.

the thing that really irritates me about Bethany is that she was never into reading or books or anything like that back when she was building her brwnd As a plus size blogger. Suddenly she decides to write novels and gets a book deal out of nowhere? No doubt she works hard but books were never part of her THING and it really just feels like an moneyspinner. Alice knows a lot more about that world but is less successful, somehow. Doesn’t seem right and I don’t read very much so her content is lost on me now to be honest. I listen to the podcast because I like familiar voices but it’s just background noise these days.

This thread is so interesting! I've followed BR for ages and remember her seeing very *cool* back in the day with the LGBT disco she did and the arched eyebrow blog was pretty cool. I find her politics quite annoying - everything is about looking cool and being on the same side as the prominent Twitter left rather than there being any substance to it, except for maybe the fat activism. I do like her books podcast!

Her books podcast is great, but Alice does carry it in my opinion.

Also I’m sure CharlotteBHC is thrilled Bethany is making earrings

I really like Bethany! I think she always looks amazing and I really admire her attitude to her body/body hair etc.

I love the book podcast she does with Alice Slater, had so many good book recommendations from there (although her frequent use of "like" and uptalk gets on my nerves a bit).

She's definitely done well for herself with her YA novels and clothes ranges etc - pleased for her as she seems like a lovely person!

Merely 'being privileged' is not a reason for someone's achievements to be downplayed. She comes from a middle class background, yes, but she still has worked for what she has. She isn't like a member of the Royal Family or the aristocracy who is going to inherit vast wealth and acres of land. She is middle class, not super rich. I don't understand the resentment at her, or are only people that came from very rough backgrounds allowed any praise for their achievements?

no, but you know what tattle is for, right? people are allowed to express their annoyance at her being handed opportunities that others struggle to get, or will simply never get. This is hardly a really nasty thread compared to some of the others on here
