Her book was going for 99p on Amazon so I downloaded it. Super stressed at work at the moment so fancied light escapism. I am struggggling to get past the first chapter. It feels very overwritten so far. Lots of long never ending sentences that are too drawn out and exposition-y.

I know this issue goes far beyond just Bethany - but it’s exhausting to see book deals constantly handed to people just because they have an online platform and sometimes write decent/funny takes on Twitter.com.

Maybe it gets much more interesting further down the line, but that first chapter is meant to draw me in! So considering how flat it feels I don’t have huge hopes…

Yeah I listened on Audible and tbh I did enjoy it but it was very much a light read. The writing on a line level was very meh and the story was somehow predictable and cliche even though it dealt with interesting topics. There were parts I enjoyed and I liked that she writes about a sex positive large protagonist having fun but overall pretty underwhelming

How much of the 99p will she get do we think?
I’m tempted to demand my 99 pence back off of her! Thought I’d give the book another go before bed and it really is unimaginably dull. Just finishing off a page where the protag debated texting her sister, booked a cab and then washed her hair. Riveting stuff.

I’m no literary critic, and some of my favourite books are slow burn ‘slice of life’ style, but there’s just zero creative flair with her writing. I feel like I’m reading someone’s shopping list.

I borrowed it from the library. I didn't hate it but i've forgotten almost everything about it already. I thought it was funny how the "Nicole" character (I think that was her name?) was obviously supposed to be BR with all the "my dude "my good witch" stuff.

A light hearted romance book I really enjoyed was Adult Virgins Anonymous by Amber Crewe. Has a couple of similarities to Bethany's book - main character decides to break out of her comfort zone and go on a lot of dates - but i found it a lot more funny and touching. I'm not totally sure but I think the female MC is large as well, it's just not a main focus of the plot.

Such an awkward interview with Joanne Harris on the podcast. Joanne didn't seem to have much sense of humor which didn't help, but Bethany seemed so unprepared.

I've started reading it and this bit is so true 😄 the "my dude" bits are a bit cringe

So I just finished the book...and actually I quite enjoyed it 😄 the my dude bad witch dialogue was a bit much at times, but it was actually an entertaining read. Also, the whole 52 dates plagiarism thing is bull really - all the main character does is plan to go on a date a week to get her confidence back up, and she doesn't even stick to it! So that blogger doesn't have a leg to stand on in my opinion.

So yeah, not bad for 99p!

ooh what’s the tea here? Plagiarism? Which blogger? 👀

Please tell me she doesn’t actually write like that in her books???
I don't have it to hand so cant quote anything but the MC makes friends with a "cool large girl" character who is constantly saying "my dude" and "boning" and all that

It's discussed in this thread from page 35 onwards..... don't get excited, it's not a blogger anyone's ever heard of :ROFLMAO: someone wrote a blog yonks ago about going in "52 dates on52 weeks", saw the tagline of BR's book and assumed it was ripped off. http://www.52firstdates.com/2022/01/and-just-like-thati-stood-up-for-myself.html

Go back a few pages on this incredibly slow moving thread lol. There was an absolutely unhinged blogger @Ing the good dude Bert claiming her newest book was a direct rip off of her old blog. Claimed they knew each other back in the arched eyebrow days but only showed print screens of this blogger relentlessly @Ing BR with no acknowledgements or replies 😂 The whole thing was such a reach and I don’t think anyone on this thread agreed with the blogger - tho it appears to have all stopped now?

Saw this on Twitter. She’s much larger than she looks in the pictures she posts comped to this candid shot.

Same here. She gets on about internalised fatphobia but seems like she’s still got a lot of it going on herself.
