I’ve been on the copper coil for about 18 months - before this I was on the implant for around 9 years.

I love the coil! It absolutely KILLED getting it put in (make sure you write off the rest of the day and stock up on cocodamol) after that though, I was fine.

My periods are a bit more painful now although I feel like that’s easing off over time. They are also like clockwork now and much shorter. On the implant they were irregular and lasted over a week.

I have definitely seen a difference in my mood too. Highly recommend it!

Backstory: I got the copper one 3months ago (day of my elective csection), 9 days later one of the strings came down and was hanging out - hosp cut it and gave me antibiotics for an infection, Dr said he couldn't see the other string so believed there to only be 1. A week later the other string came down and was hanging out longer than the first one - Dr cut it again for me. She cut it to a length where I could feel the string inside and its been fine. I started my first period after pregnancy 4 days ago, been manageable but today (TMI - I've been bleeding really heavily and filling pads up in an hour and passing some clots (smaller than 50p)), I've also been getting bad cramps and feeling really uncomfortable below/feels like somethings trying to come out, I checked and my coil string is now hanging out again (about 2 inches).

Does this sound possibly like it's rejecting or is it normal for the strings to come out when your on your period? This is my first coil so not sure what to expect. If its not normal then obviously I'll call the gp

You are meant to be able to feel the strings, they do hang down through the cervix but you should only be able to feel them a bit if you go right up (TMI!!!)

I think if it was properly coming loose or away from where it should be you would be in pain with it but defo worth getting it checked

Yeah the strings were visibly hanging out my tina it ended up coming out, whilst speaking to the nurse on the phone she asked me to gently pull it to see if I felt it move and when I did its came completely out!

Did some research on the diapraghm/cap and I physically cringed I can’t even put a tampon up there (just because I get worried about getting TSS and it feels weird) and smear tests hurts

I had the coil (copper, non hormone) for about 5 years and absolutely loved it. No hassle, didn’t know it was there. Apparently it’s the go to standard contraception for youngsters in China, whereas here there are worries that if youngsters have it they’ll put themselves at risk from STD’s.

There’s a really good website that shows photos of one in place throughout the monthly cycle, I’ll see if I can find it.

Just been reading through this thread with interest. I’m 32 and getting married this summer. Children aren't on the cards until at least next summer. My fiancé and I are relying on the pull out method currently. I used to be on the patch, we hate condoms. I can’t take the pill. Ideally want something non hormonal so the copper coil appeals. Is it worth getting one just for a year? I have an option of getting it done privately on my work health insurance

Are you in the UK? If so, you can get it for free - no need to go on insurance.

yes absolutely worth it for a year. Definitely give it a try.

Yeh I’m in the U.K. - I keep reading about crazy waiting times for it though! I’m in London and one of my mates is having to wait 3 months for a fitting !

I’ve had my implant for 3 years and went to get it removed a few months ago, after a long appointment and many painful tries, they told me they can’t remove it and I need an ultrasound guided removal. I’ve been waiting for it, for almost 3 months and they told me I need to wait another 1-2 months.

Really anxious that this implant is stuck in my arm and is expired 🥲 I’ve been on the pill in the meantime. If they cant get it out in the ultrasound guided removal or it’s too deep, I’ll need surgery on my arm, in case it’s imbedded in muscle or something.

I've only taken the injection and it made me turn into a emotional crazy witch. And I bled for about 30 days. No word of a lie. It was mostly very very light but see annoying af!!!!! I'm not in a relationship or sexually active but when they day comes I will be stuck on what to do

There are loads of options, it’s a case of trying them out to see what works best for you.

that happened to me! I had to have mini surgery under local to get it out. I could still feel it in my arm so I’m convinced I just had a tit GP who couldn’t get it out at my first appointment.

i’m DREADING having my coil out/replaced in a few years! Has anyone ever had their coil removed before?

I can feel mine, but not the ends of it. Another doctor is trying again next week, but this’ll be my second removal, so if she can’t get it out, I’m going to ask for a specialist or something…I don’t want to traumatise my arm too much

I’ve recently had my implant taken out. I was bleeding the entire time. It was none stop for months and months and I couldn’t take it anymore.

I had to go to a local GUM clinic to have it removed as apparently the local GPs don’t do them anymore.

Did this experience make you switch to the coil?

I love the implant tbh, I had no side effects, just irregular bleeding which I could deal with, but it’s just annoying it’s in my arm now and they can’t get it out. My partner and I looked into private removals but it starts from £300 to get it done. But there’s no wait list

I had my implant taken out and a coil fitted at the same appointment. I do not recommend that!

Coil was fitted first. I found it really painful (although it’s short and sharp) and then cramped for a few hours. Then I lay there all hot and bothered, from the pain, in my top and knickers whilst the GP took out my implant. I didn’t feel a thing but she had to rummage around in there for ages. I also now have a small scar from the incision.



I do love the coil though. I was on it for 10 years (had two), with minimal side effects before the implant. The pain of getting it put in is soon forgotten and outweighed by the benefits for me.
