I've tried everything
Combined pill was great but I didnt want periods
Went on depo - found it really good until I came off (to have a baby) and I was an absolute nightmare with hormones
After my son I had PND and anxiety and so didnt want hormonal contraception so had the copper coil but I had terrible heavy periods (tmi I know but I'm talking mooncup and heavy pad and still leak hourly!)
So had the implant which was brilliant, no side effects at all and no bleeding - however they forgot the use the anesthetic when inserting it so its frightened me off ever having it again even though I know theres literally no chance of that happening again

Mini pill after my second child was brilliant but we're done so want something long term as sick of taking a tablet daily, so I'm 4 weeks into Mirena - side effects are bleeding for 3-6 months which is happening but that's normal.

If I find the bleeding doesnt stop or becomes too much I'll go back to depo or if I can pluck up the courage, the implant

I was on depo for 10 years and now sayana for 4, I love sayana cause it works for me and doing it at home etc. no periods (women don’t have to bleed but no one ever talks about that do they) and no pregnancy scares. But that’s what’s worked for me. I’d never suggest anyone do the same incase it didn’t work for them

Hey. I just did my second Sayana. At home this time without the nurse (obviously) and when I took the needle out, a bubble of the liquid seemed to come out of the injection site, the started to bleed. Trying not to threat about it… it’s not like I’m having unprotected sex anyway right now. Just scared me a bit. I was a bit Beverly’s and thought I was pushing the needle down into my thigh too much, so eased off slightly.
I had to lie down afterwards as I felt light headed

I have had a little leakage too, but so far so good!

I just wish there was something that didn't harm woman's health at all which was completely safe to use

Thank you I was only 26 and my son was only 5 months old so it was scary as you can imagine. Spent 1 year in recovery but thankfully I'm now back to normal other than having to take medication for life. Oh I wish that too. Its awful how at risk we are just through trying to not get pregnant or regulate our periods. X

I had mine done at my local sexual health clinic which is actually inside my local hospital, the Dr is one of the consultant gynaecologists.

i Dunno. I have previously experienced having a local anesthetic in the cervix for something else and having that done was more uncomfortable!

have you had a vaginal childbirth? My Dr said that some ladies who haven’t had one find it more painful because the cervix has never been stretched?

I know obviously some people will have bad experiences- it’s like anything I guess, some people have a good experience and others not so much, I just know that I was a bit worried about it before I had it done and it’s actually been the most pain free and effortless contraceptive I’ve ever had

Ooh I haven't, maybe that's why! I remember going in thinking that I'd be fine because I never experienced any pain during smear test but boy was I wrong I would say though, as painful as it was, I would go through it again and again, it's definitely been worth it for me. I don't think I'll ever want any other type of contraception.

I know it can get a bad rap but I’ve had 3 Mirenas since 2011 and I love it. Haven’t had a period since mid 2012 and changing it every 5 years is simple. Dont have to think about
Contraception ever. Definitely recommend if you can power through the first six months
or so as it settles in. If it’s long term contraception you want (years rather than months) I’d recommend it.

Did you notice any side effects when moving from depo to Sayana?

Not really no!! Fluctuating weight but I’ve never gone over the odd stone, was a smooth transition for me. I wouldn’t be worried if they were out of sayana and I had to have the depo again. Sometimes I get worried I’ve injected the sayana wrong but that’s the usual worry when jabbing yourself

I was on a few pills in my late teens/early 20s and they all turned me into an emotional spotty mess my periods were extremely painful and heavy aswell.

I’ve been on the Depo which I enjoyed as your periods phase out and you don’t have to think about taking a pill daily, but I gained a bit of weight and my moods were up and down. The more I got older and started to think about having a family I read that periods can take up to 2 years to come back in some cases so decided to change.

I’ve now been on the patch (Evra) for just over two years and that’s probably the best one that has worked for me. Works just like the pill where you have a weeks break for a period only it’s a patch you change every week. My libido has taken a dip this year but I think that’s purely down to lockdown and stress of it all!

The thought of the coil absolutely terrifies me

I would love to try this but after two abortions 15 years apart after contraception failure I darent

I have had a mirena for over 20 years but now on the mini pill as an interim measure as waiting to see a gynae. I had this horrendous bleed a few months ago, huge clots and really heavy bleeding but nobody knows why, never experienced anything so horrific an Internal scan showed fibroids but not huge ones. The clots have dislodged the mirena and they don’t want to remove it until I have seen the gynae in case I get more heavy bleeding. I am really missing the convenience of the mirena and will hopefully be able to get another one.

Oh you poor thing! Hope it’s sorted soon!

Was on loestrin, wasn’t too bad for about 2 years until I started having really bad pelvic pain but was given microgynon... Which really affected my moods/mental health for about another year. Then got the implant and it was amazing as I never had a period, for 3 years, BUT looking back I gained a lot of weight and had really bad moods again but enjoyed not having to remember to take anything or have checkups. Got a second implant and did have periods, but very light and irregular for a year and never stopped bleeding until they agreed to remove it at 2.5 years in...
Went back to loestrin and honestly loved it, then they stopped making it and they gave me rigvideon (?) which was ok but not my favourite, somehow ended up on microgynon again (it is the fucking devil) and I had the most painful migraines of my life, seeing stars, lights etc and so was persuaded to get an implant again. Just had it removed after a year of being on a period every fucking day.

I really don’t fancy the coil so I’m considering the mini pill, but for a couple of months I’m going cold turkey, letting my body heal and using condoms as honestly after 10 years of fucking about with my body I need a break!

I was on the injection for 7 years and found my sex drive vanished, and I became miserable and snappy, it also gave me acne. On the plus side, after reading it can take 2 years for periods to come back mine took 1.5 years to return and got pregnant 6 months later. I am debating the non hormonal coil but the stories about how painful it is to insert put me off so for now it’s condoms

Has anyone used a diaphragm? Want to buddy up nexplanon with a second method, but not condoms…have never used a mooncup or anything

I have, I got the caya off Amazon and have used it with Natural Cycles when Im in my fertile period. It’s ok but I have to be honest I’m never 100% sure it’s in place. If you are seriously avoiding pregnancy / would be catastrophic if you got pregnant I would stick to condoms. That being said nexplanon is extremely effective, I had the implant for 6 years and never had any scares.

I think I have quite a high pain threshold and have had a vaginal birth but the pain of my 3 coils has stayed in my mind!!!
I have a copper one. They said as I had had depression it wouldn’t be recommended for me to have a mirena.
They call the coil the Rolls Royce of contraception!

Same here, I’ve been off contraception for almost 8 years now! I always had the depo injection but was worried about being on it too long and knew I’d want kids at some point so I came off it and tracked my cycles. Went with the pull out method and that seemed to work. I was always worried we had no accidents and maybe I wasn’t actually fertile, but I’ve got pregnant twice now first time trying so I guess I’m very fertile! Trying to persuade my husband to get the snip now I do not want any weird hormones or putting anything in my body!

What was everyone's experience with getting the coil fitted?
I had the Mirena coil fitted two years ago and while it wasn't agony, it was a very painful procedure. I remember thinking that it was the worst pain I'd ever experienced. I would describe it as having someone penetrating you with some kind of sharp object and trying to pierce through your uterus (I guess it's not that far off from the truth ). It probably didn't help that the coil didn't open properly at first, and that the GP had to go find another one in her drawers while I laid there with my legs wide open I was lucky, I didn't have any residual pain or cramping it was only painful during the actual fitting.
I remember reading about other girls' experiences with the coil before my appointment and in the vast majority of articles I read and videos I watched, it was described as something very painful.
Anyways, now that Naga Manchetti has spoken about her experience, I read on the BBC that X and Y health boards and organisations say that it's not meant to be painful? There's even a physician who said that most women would say that the pain is a 2 or a 3? I'm really just interested in hearing about your experience with it because I feel like I've been lied to

I’ve been on depo for almost 10 years and have now been prescribed Sayana. I did my first one with the nurse on Friday (2 days ago) and I’ve noticed a bruise on my stomach. Did/does this happen to you?? I know I need to alternate each area every time I inject.

deffo felt embarrassed/awkward getting my stomach roll out to inject 🫣

I'm still using it but I inject in my thighs..I do sometimes get a bruise but I do bruise easily anyway!

Has anyone had the copper coil and recommend it? I'm having my second baby next week via csection and they've advised they can put the coil in during the op so I wouldn't feel it. I don't get on with hormonal contraception (tried several pills, implant and patch) so I like how this lasts for 10 years and no hormones. The only thing that worries me is the heavier bleeding that can happen, but is it a ridiculous amount or manageable when you already have semi-heavy periods?

I have one and have for the last 4 years. I had light to medium periods before and I would say they are maybe 10-25% heavier now
