Going off on one… I don’t know if it’s cellulite or not, but one thigh definitely has indents on the outside of it and I’m wondering if it’s from my depo. My old doctors would alternate thighs (this was for 6 ish years) but my new one did it at the bottom of back/top of my bum.

Definitely persevere, it will settle in and after that it’s amazing and so low maintenance! It protects against endometrial cancer too!

Did this experience make you switch to the coil?

I love the implant tbh, I had no side effects, just irregular bleeding which I could deal with, but it’s just annoying it’s in my arm now and they can’t get it out. My partner and I looked into private removals but it starts from £300 to get it done. But there’s no wait list

If I could of gotten it taken out and a new one in easily I’d of probably done that. But because I was in limbo with it for so long and had To go on the injection and then the pill for a year which I hated (I can’t remember to take the pill at all!!) I had time to think and wanted something I could have in for longer and forget about.
But I’m on the non hormonal copper coil - and it’s really regulated my periods and I feel like my moods are easier to navigate. I literally know when I’m going to come on instead of everything being eratic.
Getting it in is horrible but I really do recommend it.

I had my implant taken out and a coil fitted at the same appointment. I do not recommend that!

Coil was fitted first. I found it really painful (although it’s short and sharp) and then cramped for a few hours. Then I lay there all hot and bothered, from the pain, in my top and knickers whilst the GP took out my implant. I didn’t feel a thing but she had to rummage around in there for ages. I also now have a small scar from the incision.



I do love the coil though. I was on it for 10 years (had two), with minimal side effects before the implant. The pain of getting it put in is soon forgotten and outweighed by the benefits for me.

I have taken the combined pill for 15+ years (minus been pregnant)
I’ve always been pretty happy with it although I do wonder if it’s killed my libido a bit
anyway due to migraines I have to come off it. What do you all recommend??

I definitely don’t fancy the mini pill, what’s everybody’s thoughts on a copper or mirena coil? Any advice welcome

What's wrong with the mini pill? Are you talking about cerezette?

I’ve had the copper coil for about 8 months now.
It was completely painless to have put in - didn’t feel a thing and it literally took about 2minutes to do from start to finish!!!!)
My periods are regular and are similar to how they were naturally, perhaps ever so
Slightly heavier but nothing that causes me any issues or problems in anyway. I have nothing negative to say about the copper coil - it’s been great for me.

Thank you so much!! I got it put in at my section and no complaints so far other than getting a fright when one of the strings came down and out major panic moment hahaha

I can honestly say that I never experienced any pain whatsoever when having my copper coil fitted. None. The whole “procedure” took less than 2minutes and I felt NOTHING. Nothing. Not a thing!!! I was very surprised after reading a lot of horror stories but hand on heart, it was very quick and completely pain free - infact I actually had to ask the Dr if she had even done anything because it was so quick and I didn’t feel anything!

Omg where is your GP surgery, I need to go there Isn't it mad how different everyone's experience is? Before I had mine fitted, I was going through the little leaflet with the GP to make sure I understood what I was getting. She told me about all the plus points, then went "Now I won't lie to you, it is painful" and she asked whether I wanted a nurse in the room so I could hold her hand. After it was fitted, she told me to lie down for a bit to catch my breath before getting dressed. I just don't understand why this is normal. Like if you know that the procedure is going to be painful, wouldn't you give a little something to numb the pain a minimum? I guess it has to do with the fact that not everyone will require pain relief? Or maybe just that generally, women and contraception are not that important in the eyes of medicine

I've tried everything and Zoely is the only thing that works for me. I literally have zero side effects. It contains estradiol, the natural estrogen, compared with other pills that contain synthetic estrogen.

I love it so much! But far out, it's expensive.

I’ve tried quite a few over the years the combined pill (also had to stop due to migraines) the mini pill, the implant, mirena coil and the copper coil! I struggle with the hormonal side effects so would 100% recommend the copper coil. I found insertion a little painful but was literally 5 minutes of pain for up to 5 (or even 10!) years contraception! It made my periods heavier but that was the only side effect. Recently had it removed to try and conceive but would definitely have it again in the future.

The mirena was also good but it stopped my periods completely and I prefer to have them.
The implant was by far the worst for me, I bled non stop for 3 out of 4 weeks every month and my mood swings were horrendous!!

Has anyone had the copper coil and recommend it? I'm having my second baby next week via csection and they've advised they can put the coil in during the op so I wouldn't feel it. I don't get on with hormonal contraception (tried several pills, implant and patch) so I like how this lasts for 10 years and no hormones. The only thing that worries me is the heavier bleeding that can happen, but is it a ridiculous amount or manageable when you already have semi-heavy periods?

Hey. I just did my second Sayana. At home this time without the nurse (obviously) and when I took the needle out, a bubble of the liquid seemed to come out of the injection site, the started to bleed. Trying not to threat about it… it’s not like I’m having unprotected sex anyway right now. Just scared me a bit. I was a bit Beverly’s and thought I was pushing the needle down into my thigh too much, so eased off slightly.
I had to lie down afterwards as I felt light headed

Does anyone have experiences of the injection? I really don’t want to keep taking the pill. I came off it about 6 months ago and I’m so much happier and it’s also massively cleared my skin up! My boyfriend hates condoms and tbf I don’t completely trust them but obviously we use them at the minute. I don’t want an implant or coil so I think my best options are the injection or the patch.

I don’t personally but it’s the same hormones as in the pill (or progesterone only pill anyway) so if that didn’t suit you there’s a chance the injection won’t either.

I have the copper coil but I’m booked in for a hormonal replacement but I think I’m going to cancel. I have 18 months left on my copper, then we are planning one more baby.

I’m just fed up of periods.

I’m in contraception limbo. I’m not on the pill anymore and don’t want to go back onto hormonal methods, the coil sounds horrifying and I have quite painful periods anyway so that’s a no. Natural cycles sounds like a lot of hassle and not very accurate (who wakes up at the exact same time every day and always gets the same amount of sleep?!) and I’d still end up needing to use condoms half the time anyway?! There really is nothing else out there! Fed up at the lack of choices. So my current method is just to abstain

I’ve asked loads of times to be sterilised but I always get told no. Mainly that I had to be over 30, which I am now (37) and that I need to try a coil first. Now there saying cos of covid stuff like sterilisation won’t be happening.

Yes I agree, I like the reassurance of having my periods.

I was on microgynon for 6 years before I had my son, then went back on it after he was born for 2 years before I had my daughter. In all honesty I was very naive about what else was out there and the GP wasn't forthcoming in offering much advice.

After I had my daughter my hormones took a really long time to settle back down. I bled for about 3 months and didn't get a period until she was 11 months old (I wasn't breast feeding) I was unimaginably emotional and the slightest thing upset me. My husband took me to the GP who pretty much said hormones can take up to 2 years to settle and that if my periods weren't back after 12 months to go back.

I decided I didn't want to put anymore hormones in my body when I couldn't regulate my natural ones. So we have used condoms ever since. My husband has never really broached the subject and knows I'm comfortable with the current method.

I know you can get hormone free contraception but I'm still not quite ready to try anything, I suppose I'm a little terrified things will offset my hormones again.

Came off the implant in august, and I’ve noticed I’m losing more hair on my hairbrush and I saw someone on insta talk about when they came off BC they had hair loss problems...has anyone experienced hair loss when coming off contraception? I was on nexplanon for 7 years

I’ve had both the copper and mirena, both have worked brilliantly for me. I’ve had three in total since I was 20 and only stopped for a pregnancy. No side effects and doesn’t take long for your body to get used to it.

I would recommend going to a family planning clinic/ gynae clinic to have it fitted. They are used to doing them and this has been the most straight forward insertion, I’ve had a doctor do one at my normal surgery and it wasn’t as pleasant and easy.

Same here, I’ve been off contraception for almost 8 years now! I always had the depo injection but was worried about being on it too long and knew I’d want kids at some point so I came off it and tracked my cycles. Went with the pull out method and that seemed to work. I was always worried we had no accidents and maybe I wasn’t actually fertile, but I’ve got pregnant twice now first time trying so I guess I’m very fertile! Trying to persuade my husband to get the snip now I do not want any weird hormones or putting anything in my body!

hahaha I was convinced I was infertile too I even managed to book some blood tests but found out 2 days before I was pregnant!
