That reel made me feel physically ill. As someone who has battled bulimia for over a decade, and is now a weight I’m happy with and feeling secure, I watched that and ended up body checking in the mirror getting ready this morning, looking at my thighs etc.
How patronising is this though?
because obvs creating a reel filled with photos of herself at a low weight wasn't low enough, this is the kind of patronising response you receive when you contact her to highlight the fact that her content is triggering. and it's not as though she wasn't aware - she knows damn well that the photos she's posting are going to trigger her vulnerable followers - those who struggle with food/eating disorders/body image issues etc, yet when they reach out to her to explain the impact her reels are having, she responds as though she's entirely blameless, all like "aw, soz bbz!" but with the implication that it's
your problem and nothing to do with her.
she is the one sharing images she knows are triggering and inappropriate - which she's proved that she is fully aware of, by adding a totally meaningless *trigger warning* in her caption - and she is the one who needs. to take responsibility for the content she shares, especially when she has such a huge platform and many of her followers are vulnerable, having specifically followed her to try and improve their relationship with their body, under the guise that her account promotes "body confidence". a popular hashtag she is totally exploiting to share photos of herself at her lowest weight.
i have anorexia, so i can totally relate to you feeling triggered - and it just goes to show the amount of people her content will be negatively impact, yet she simply does not care. she must be deleting comments, because i do not believe for a second that nobody has left a single critical comment on a reel which goes against every rule in the eating disorder community on SM, in that sharing low weight before/after photos is a huge no no and totally unacceptable - yet she claims to be part of that community, stating she has "recovered" from the eating disorder which still very much has its claws in her. it's incredibly frustrating, because i am so tempted to send a message explaining how triggering and inappropriate her content is, and encourage her to step back from social media until she gets into a better headspace - but even highlighting that it's not okay to share the photos she is sharing and pointing out that she needs to take responsibility for protecting the vulnerable audience she knows damn well follow her page will either get me blocked, or I will recieve an infuriatingly sarcastic or ditzy reply, essentially justifying that it's to post content that violates IGs rules because she added *trigger warning* in the caption, or just a "sorry" with the insulinuation that my own triggers are my responsibility, not hers - which they are, but not when someone is sharing content that will be seen by millions of people without warning, while fully aware of the damaging impact it will have. such meaningless, generic responses to totally valid messages are standard of pro-ana "if you don't like it, don't look at it"
bull.
