I didn't believe my brother and his posts about illegals coming here from France the claims were pretty out there. In trying to be smug and proving him wrong, it was me that was proved wrong. I could not believe what I was seeing, the dinghies even being escorted over here by the fence navy. 100s of dinghies along the coast. so many men around the same age were being escorted onto busses. looking smug at the camera none looking worried or scared. I was transported to a whole new way of thinking.
I always believed those people who complained about illegals here were racists arsholes.
I have seen the illegals here in France awaiting their chance to get across Theyy have even overtaken a holiday campsite near the port that of course is now strictly out-of-bounds for tourists any longer and nothing th owner can do about it seemingly, not to mention intimidating people waiting to board their ferry or climbing into caravans and trailers whilst the owners are getting something to eat before their journey. The gendarmes are on constant patrol but it does not stop them making attempt after attempt to get across by whatever means they can and do you know why? Because in France they don't make asylum easy, its a long, difficult, laborious process and at the end they don't get a lifetime of handouts as in the UK as they are obliged to get work because benefits automatically stop after 6 months - there is no lifetime of obligation to fund dossing about for anybody here. TBH I admire it but you can see why the UK is the destination of choice for everybody can't you?

I’m a bit conflicted on Biden because this was going to happen anyway. Moving troops out in a phased manner may have delayed some of the chaos but there’s the possibility that people would have known what was coming, some employees would have been left behind (which imo is the most shameful thing) and, as he has seem to have said, it would have been seen as a waste of time for some people anyway. Plus the possibility that it may have been a waste of more money

I think it’s easy for the public to sit there and call it all shameful and blame the people in power, but this seems to have been the outcome anyway - maybe on a smaller scale but still shameful. Many Americans weren’t in favour of staying there either and I doubt many were thinking about human rights

Apparently Boris has been working behind the scenes since the start of this and we haven’t heard much about it. Not a fan of Boris personally, so that seems like a stupid choice by his PR department or the media as it would make him look like he’s at least trying and isn’t just backing Raab and his holidays

I think this is more of a reminder that countries shouldn’t follow America blindly or in general tbh. The EU isn’t able to do anything because it’s really not their business, and Britain has not had a lot of international influence for ages anyway. All the smaller countries are going to be left screwed if they’re not able to withdraw from Afghanistan in time. Doubt many are going to blame America if/when it comes to that because diplomacy

Also I wonder what’s so hard with getting planes clearance. It seems like Pen had everything planned to a T and now MoD dropped out on him for some reason, so there must be some difficulty with getting clearance?
As of the last update Pen has got the OK for his planeload of animals and people and is still awaiting that good ol' rubberstamp before they actually pack up to leave - its all bought & paid for and as usual its waiting for bureaucracy to catch up which is all very well considering how desperate everything is :(
I expect Boris' wife had a lot to do with pushing him along being the keen animal advocate that she is so a Big Thanks to Carrie! Now we just need Pen and his Ark out of there asap

I think the story of someone evacuated from Afghanistan to Germany and left there wouldn't play that badly so not suprised she's not a priority

It does show how ridiculous it all is. The oversimplification to call someone bad and the other person good - applies to many in US politics and those in Afghanistan.

There would have been outrage if Johnson has given such selfish and heartless speaches as Biden has.

Trump no doubt would have ducked this up, but in a different way and no one will ever know if that would have yeilded a better result.
Quite right. Kamala Harris too.

“Courageous and right”. There must be some alternative definition of courage that I’m not aware of. But here we are.

Now I’m a cynical b. I’m aware of this and I embrace it. But I can’t help but think that any criticism of Kamala’s speech, which was clear high end bull, will be immediately shut down by her supporters as sexist, racist or both. I guess that is the way it’s going at the moment, but I refuse to use the W word!

It has been said a country either has strong borders, and weaker access to welfare services, or a weak border and tougher access to welfare services.

The UK has neither.

But hey, some think letting in large numbers every year, 'trumps' overcrowding and unemployment in the host countries....

To the benefit of whom exactly?

I’m not sure what Priti Patel is doing about illegal immigration? Because she said she was going to be hard on it but even more people have crossed the channel whilst she’s been in her job?

Of course. They don’t see women as equal, if they did women would be at their meetings and discussion the future of the country.
exactly, even at this point with their pretence they cannot pretend they care about women at all, imagine how much worse it will be in a few weeks/months time? if this is them on their best behaviour.......

I agree. I think once the foreign forces are out they will show their true colours

Biden nearly 3 hours late with today's talk. He's ducked it up either way. I don't think the G7 or his own military will change his mind. Interesting how it's not nearly as big story in the states. He still might get away with it, someone in British politics could never.

Biden finally did his speach 4 hours late. Claimed the evacuation will be done by 31st of aug which seems like a lie as so many commentators, other countries and apparent insiders say that'll be near impossible. Also said they were there to eliminate terrorists which they've done, but then also said there was a risk of terrorism while they remained there 🤦‍♀️. Then walked off not answering any questions. What a tit show.

I think the issue now is that they will have to leave and not be able to rescue everyone they need to (not even considering the refugees) https://www.archive.is/oldest/https...1-august-pentagon-says?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other just terrifying

Why anyone would want to go into the army and serve for the bunch of spineless leaders there currently are around. There used to be a time when the king would lead his men into war, but these days the leaders have never done an ounce of serious military service.

Biden makes himself look even worse every time he holds these speeches.

When he flounces off at the end, without answering questions, says it all.

The floucing after reading the autocue is the cherry on the bleeping cake.

Last time he answered questions he was as dillusional as trump claiming the us wasn't diminished and allies fully supported him.

Why would anyone want to join the armed forces when you are at constant risk of legal action for doing your job, then treated like crap when you leave the forces.

Some also need to grasp that when soldiers are on the battlefield, they are faced with the gun welding enemy. It is either them, or the enemy that will take the bullet - there is no compromise, or 'niceties' to change that outcome.

Not on most people's radar but it was quite saddening to see in the paralympics opening ceremony yesterday, Afghanistan was represented by a flag with no athletes because they had been unable to get out.

Good news though apparently they have been confirmed as being in a group of athletes evacuated last night (or this morning depending where you are).

UPDATE on Pen Farthing out in Afghanistan - Ben Wallace is seemingly holding up their departure as he says he's " not rescuing 'pets' " but as Pen pointed out - the plane is privately funded and already paid for and the animals will be in the hold & not occupying seats so WHY is this happenning?

Boris tell this muppet to sort his tit out please!! :(

It seems like they're being allowed to leave if he's able to get to the airport. Maybe that's why Pen hasn't updated the situation yet as I was looking for news on his pages
