Isn't like proven or something that it is not productive to study for really long periods of time ?
In my head it's comon knowledge that working for 12 hours with one hour of break is not sustainable and you won't accomplish that much.
My cousin is doing his phd in nuclear chemistry and he studies less then Ruby when she was in High School.
(Long time lurker here, my first comment, woo!)
That's absolutely correct, and I have these issues myself. I'm currently in my third/final year of studying Philosophy & Religion at a northern uni and I've been struggling really badly with mental health and assessment workloads.
I'm still trying to work on my habits, which are super destructive. There have been days where I've done 12-14 hours of work without a proper break, and only stopping to eat/wash. It's bad for you mentally and physically. I realised it's become a problem when my friend pointed out the other day that the fact I've turned to downing 5-HTP to help me cope. Hell, today I finished my last assignment of the month (gotta finish my dissertation by the end of January) and it was weird actually having the time to myself.
But steering the conversation back to Rooby-Doo, I've found absolutely none of her study videos helpful when I thought I'd experiment and try some of her methods myself. I also feel sorry for Blakeney - I've been a doormat friend before and it's something she doesn't deserve. That said, if Blakeney made her own videos, I'd actually watch them and feel like they were genuine.
Also, reading these posts for the past few weeks has been quite illuminating to me. I took what she filmed at face value and didn't really think to criticise her because I just saw her as another studytuber. However, after seeing her incredibly problematic tendencies, I struggle to see anything else. As a guy who's struggled with ED before, seeing her post about food (or, that is, the lack thereof) really made me see my old thinking reflected in her.
On one hand, especially from my northern working-class perspective, she comes across as a stuck-up over-privileged petulant rich kid who's never faced any sort of hardship beyond being rejected by Waterstones. On the other, I just see a lonely girl who's almost like Pygmalion; Ruby's constructed an idea of herself as a sculptor creates a statue, and has fallen in love with it, all to her own detriment. We see part of the 'real Ruby', but she's so lost in her YouTube persona and her real self that she seems to be in the midst of an existential crisis, trying to figure out where her persona ends and real life begins (I'm trying to not turn this into some postmodern discussion about hyperreality, sorry if I derail this). It's clear that she seeks validation and is insecure about her intelligence - I'm the same. The best thing for her to do is realise the limits of her intellect, accept it, and work with it. Trying to come across as a prodigy isn't working for her. She doesn't know everything, and that's okay.
I've no doubt that she's read the posts on this site - is probably even the most active lurker. I can only hope that she sees her destructive behaviours and eventually tries to better herself. I think I'm an anomaly being a guy who watches her videos, so I'm assuming that her audience is mostly young girls/uni girls - I hope she realises the influence she actually holds and stops with the harmful content. There'll be people who genuinely look up to her, and it hurts me to think that some will try to emulate her *diet*.
Anyway, this wasn't remotely relevant to the discussion, I thought I'd just baptise my Tattle membership with my first-ever comment. It's nearly 06:00, these are just my tired disjointed ramblings, sorry!
P.S. Please don't follow Ruby's example and wear your bike helmets back-to-front - it goes without saying, but bashing your noggin is rather detrimental to your wellbeing. Then again, maybe it'd knock some sense into her head.
