Totally agree, we got rid of our 'new car on finance' when the time came and bought a 2nd hand car, ok it was a ford focus estate so large car but it cost us a couple of grand instead of £400 a month & i was pregnant. The poor thing went to car heaven in January this year, after 11 years of ownership. (Car was 21 years old) Unfortunately, we only had a couple of grand saved and couldn't find a car without getting a loan, still, our current 2nd hand car is 8 years old and I have a £5k loan on it and trying to over pay as much as possible.
In my flat, been here nearly 4 years now, I still have the 2nd hand sofa from the charity shop, it is on its last legs and would love a new one but I need to get the car loan paid first. This one will do until I have saved.
It's a total turn around and maturity for me. Younger me would have put the sofa on credit. I don't need a new sofa, I would like one. Unfortunately, where I live and work, I need a car. That's the difference.
