So I need some good news stories! I posted on this thread a couple years ago that I needed an upper wisdom removed and had lots of advice. I chickened out and never booked it. Its not bothered me since, every check up the dentist reminds me it needs to come out before it causes me pain and I say I'll get it booked in - then I don't.
It's obviously now causing me pain and trouble, last weekend it was horrendous and ibuprofen with cocodamol wasn't even touching it. I've booked in for next Tuesday to have it pulled and I am TERRIFIED. I have watched multiple videos and it's making it worse. I think I can just about handle the pulling side, it's the aftermath. I'm petrified my face will swell up and bruise and I won't be able to put any make up on and look horrific on the school run 🙃 also have a severe fear I will get the dry socket and be in mass pain.
I'm genuinely hoping it's a quick pull and not an in and out several times job that takes ages and ages.
I've had several root canals due to absecces, I can handle procedures fine it's just the thought of the pulling and the gaping hole and blood 🤮🤮🤮🤮

Getting bottom wisdom tooth out tomorrow in dentist, I had been so excited the past few days to be rid of the pain but panic setting in now 😭 don’t know how I’ll sleep tonight. I feel nervous as I’ve stupidly not done any prep either, didn’t know about pineapple juice etc. I’ve bought painkillers, an ice pack and some yogurt and instant mash but that’s it ☹
You‘ll be fine! The „prep“ some people do isn‘t necessary nor a guarantee for anything. Just follow all the dentist instructions (especially icing as much as possible) and get excited about one less issue in the future

Slightly younger but at 29/30 mine decided to become constantly infected - they’ve been sat there happily half through since I was 18 and I just assumed they had given up :ROFLMAO: I’m on the waiting list to have the buggers out but someone told me it’s a 2 year wait and that was before lockdown!

I had my lower right & upper right out last month it was fine. I didn’t have any swelling or bruising. No dry socket either but I did follow the rules to the letter. Stock up on plenty of soft foods & rest if you can. I had several infections before the teeth were removed and the infections were a lot worse than the extractions.

I had my two lower ones taken out and honestly, it was ok. I made the mistake of smoking though and ended up with an infection and THAT was horrible. So, dont worry. Stick to the aftercare guidance and you'll be ok

Thank you sooo much 😚
All these messages are definitely helping put my mind at rest.
Good luck tomorrow! Make sure you have some soft food in for afterwards - I pretty much loved Mac and cheese and yoghurts for about a week after! Rest up too, you will be fine xx

I had all 4 of mine taken out GA and I was given co-dyramol. I think for local you would just be advised to use standard pain killers

Thank you both!!! Really helpful. The root fillings I've had were 1hour 30 minutes so I'm trying to make myself think it cannot be longer or worse than that.

I don't mind a bit of a pain afterwards, I just am worried about the dry socket and the actual thought of it being pulled.

Did either of you ladies get a bruised face or swelling?

I am in absolute agony with an impacted bottom wisdom tooth! I was referred to have it out in hospital in April 2019 after 2 infections and my appointment has been cancelled 4 times! I had no pain for over a year and then it recently flared up again, the pain is like nothing else, it’s affected my head, jaw, ear and all my gums and teeth on the left hand side. It’s a constant pain which just won’t relent. The dentist gave me another X-ray last week and has now said they can take it out for me at the dentist this coming Friday, it can’t come soon enough!!!
Any pain relief tips in the meantime would be appreciated, I’m on regular painkillers and have a heat pad which is helping but last night I couldn’t sleep at all :( feel so miserable. Have tried salt water but that seemed to irritate it.
The only other thing that helped me before I got mine removed was bonjela. Good luck for Friday! 💗

Im an NHS patient for other stuff though. I’m going to query that I think.
Yes definitely query it but I know private prices are ridiculous. Even a check up is about £60!

I had a wisdom tooth out on NHS about 3 years ago and it was Band 2 which was £55/57 at the time but it goes up each April.

Turns out I have dry back to back socket I’m still in agony 6 days on..: I’ve been back too the dentist twice now who each time have blocked it with clove oil on a pad. Any other advice please

Thanks guys 😬 trying to be brave and positive about it! It's just such a massive fear that I've had for so long!
Was your extractions quick? How long would you say for the actual pulling?
I had one and it was like 5 mins

Does it feel like a sharp pain in the socket? You could have a dry socket - very normal. It’s when the blood clot doesn’t form over the hole (or it falls out when you rinse your mouth), so your nerve endings are exposed. So any bit of air feels like a stab.

Call your dentist and ask about it. I went back after about 10 days, he confirmed there was no blood clot, cleaned out the socket and put this amazing packing in it that tastes like cloves but was amazing pain relief
No it’s a very painful dull ache. I was fine on day 1 and 2 and then on day 3 my baby hit my swollen cheek with his head and it’s been agony ever since. I can’t sleep. Just constantly taking pain killers.
I don’t know if it’s just from where the baby has bruised it more. But cos I’ve never had one out before I don’t know if it’s normal to still be in pain in day 5 or not x

So glad I found this thread! I’m having two of my wisdom teeth out soon (upper & lower) at the dental hospital with local anesthetic . Does anyone know if they will give me pain meds or should I buy my own? I’m a bit nervous but I’ve had some horrendous infections so I’m quite relieved they are finally coming out.
Are you in the UK? I wasn’t given anything, just told to use ibuprofen

I'm 27 with 2 wisdom teeth on the left side (top and bottom).

The first one grew fully when I was about 24, had no problems. The bottom one grew into the side of my mouth practically overnight so it's actually perched on my jawbone 😩 because of it I've ended up with really bad TMJ.

I got referred to a specialist in November for it to be taken out but then lockdown happened. 💔

I had two wisdom teeth out under general anaesthetic but that was 30 years ago! I then had one out at the Dentist with the numbing injection and the last one was really loose so I just told him to take it out without a numbing injection and it came out easily!

My husband also had his out under GA but again, quite a few years ago. Have they stopped doing it under GA?
No I had mine removed under general, I think they prefer to do it without but if it’s impacted and a complicated removed they will do GA x

My top right started emerging about 2 years ago, it hurts for a week then goes away. One time it flared up at Xmas and I couldn’t even chew my dinner which was upsetting 😂 then I got dragged by my dentist for not going to see them about it, mate it’s xmas did you really think I could get an appointment on xmas day?! Then this year I’ve had problems with my teeth on my top left, including a cracked filling which got infected underneath. This happened 2 weeks into lockdown and I was crying with pain then the dentist gave me some anti biotics and since then it’s been fine. I am terrified of the dentist though as last time I went I had 3 fillings but I think that’s just made them more sensitive. I have soft bones due to a genetic condition and seems to be affecting my teeth too which is v depressing.

SORRY FOR AN ESSAY AND ANY MISTAKES.

I had an upper right out on Monday, I was also just like you, petrified that I'd look like a punch bag and would 100% get dry socket...

I didn't, for either!

The first numbing needle I didn't even realise, the second felt scratchy and a bit warm, I'd say spiking your gums with a crisp is more painful.
Then the extraction. You know it's supposed to hurt, but you can't actually feel the hurt, so it's really bizarre as you can quite honestly hear every creak and crack being amplified by your head 🙈
It feels like pressure, it's not at all painful, just incredibly strange, it's unexplainable.
I went in at 10:05am, check, xrays, needles and extraction all done by 10:25am and I was out by 10:30am.
Face felt like TV static and I had to bite down on gauze for 20minutes.
I walked around town and picked up some bits and bobs(mainly painkillers)then walked the 15mins upbank walk home.

Tiniest bit of swelling, my husband really had to look to see it to confirm, 0 bruising and 0 dry socket.
Jaw felt a little crappy and couldn't open my mouth more than 2fingers worth for 48hrs, my bite felt incredibly off and I couldn't put my teeth together for a little bit more than 48hrs. Wasn't terribly painful, more just a shock and ow.
It's Friday now and the only shock ow pain I get is if I clash my teeth together, like making alligator snapping sounds at my kiddo 😂

I'm back in the seat Monday (20th) for a bottom left Wisdom extraction.
Even though it'll be a week since I last experienced it and know it's very much mind over matter, I'm still nervous and most definitely not looking forward to it.
It's 100% natural.
Please, brave the chair, a moment of gruesome sounds and a week of feeling a bit strange but okay, is much better than a single day of toothache ❤
