So..all my wisdom teeth grew through in my late teens and I thought I was done with them but in the last few weeks...at 36, they've decided to move a bit and I'm in grief...am I too 'long in the tooth' ...has anyone else experienced this
Yup. I’m 37 and had to have one out last year that had shifted and caused me so much pain. Much as I’m not a fan of dentists the pain was so bad they could’ve done anything to me as long as it went away. In reality they took 2 mins to get the bleeder out once the anaesthetic worked. I feel your pain. In the meantime clove oil helps (from chemist) and I used to put a hot water bottle or hot flannel on my face.

My wisdom teeth started coming in at 16...fast forward 16 or so years and they are still not completely through (although, luckily they are coming up straight so don’t need removing). Once a year or so I get torturous pain from. Worse than child birth! It’s usually when they shift up slightly and/or a food particle gets trapped and it becomes inflamed. My dentist advised rinsing with mouth wash then laying with milk on the area for 5 or so minutes. It doesn’t stop the pain completely but after a few repeats it subsides dramatically.

I'm home! Still numbed up, anesthetic was put either side of the tooth so feeling like the roof of my mouth is missing!

It wasn't as bad as I thought at all. My heart was pounding though when I got in the chair. I didn't feel any pain, the creaking sound wasn't pleasant but that was about it. I went in at 205 and I was out by 225. I've been told to put some more gauze on if it bleeds and to chomp down on that. No straws or spitting etc and nothing to raise my blood pressure for the next 2 days.

I'm going to take pain killers regardless for the next 24 hours to try and keep on top of anything.

Ladies thank you so much for all your advice, it definitely helped me and I'm really glad I've done it now
You superstar!
My Monday appointment which was meant to be one more extraction, ended up being one top&bottom wisdom tooth 😂
All healing just fine, I hope you are too 💕

Today’s my day. I had the worst pain Tuesday and Thursday and luckily someone had canceled their appointment today so it’s all happening super fast. I’ve just had my last meal and my last glas of pineapple juice (2.5l in total now since yesterday) so I’m hoping the swelling won’t be too bad and I’m all stocked up with Ibuprofen, ice packs, soups and ice creams .

I thought I would be more nervous but I’m actually really excited for the anesthesia (getting a half-sleep sedation which many say feels like a really nice long nap) and for it to be finally over! Will report back.

And @Hann98 I hope you’re feeling well again x
hope it all goes well! It’s the best thing I ever did getting mine removed.

I can empathise with the impacted wisdom tooth this is my second one. I think it could be a hospital job and not the dentist this time round. I just want it to grow enough so it can be removed.

A dentist told me years ago you can get wisdom teeth up until the age of 80! 😳

Had all 4 removed and it absolutely fucked the alignment of my teeth. Within a couple of years everything shifted position and now I’m having to get them aligned 😭

Getting bottom wisdom tooth out tomorrow in dentist, I had been so excited the past few days to be rid of the pain but panic setting in now 😭 don’t know how I’ll sleep tonight. I feel nervous as I’ve stupidly not done any prep either, didn’t know about pineapple juice etc. I’ve bought painkillers, an ice pack and some yogurt and instant mash but that’s it ☹
You will be fine. I was massively worrying about mine and so panicky. I didn't do any of the prep either. Follow the dentist instructions to the letter, mine told me basically do nothing which would raise your blood pressure so no exercise, try not to get stressed, even be careful bending down as the blood will rush to your head. The first night I slept with my head propped up a bit. I took paracetamol and ibuprofen at regular intervals before any pain had chance to make itself known.
Procedure itself was fine for me, 12 minutes from going into the room until it was out, and about 5 minutes of that was me panicking and the dentist telling me not to worry. Good luck xxx

I had a wisdom tooth out on Monday after spending the whole weekend beforehand in agony. I had no idea what tooth was causing the pain, one side of my mouth was just killing me for two days straight.

I’ve never had any bother with my wisdom teeth before this, I wasn’t even sure that I had any.

Anyone not get theirs? I got my first one at 20 and my second at 31 and other 2 still haven’t appeared. Is it safe to say they’ll never come?

Hi everyone. I’m reviving this thread as I’m heading to the dentist in a little bit to get my wisdom teeth checked and most likely taken out soon.
I woke up with the worst pain two weeks ago (upper left), two days ago (upper right) and tonight again (upper right) and at this point I’m 99% sure it’s gotta be my wisdom teeth.
I’m super scared about the whole procedure as I already had one tooth pulled (non wisdom) and I did not react well to the numbing injection and was bleeding much longer than normal, so I’m super stressed about possible complications and really want to be put under GA (but I’m also scared about that) because I was slightly traumatized by the pressure, pulling and noises of getting that one tooth out.

Reading everyone’s experience has really helped though, so thank you everyone for sharing and I hope you are all doing well.
Have you told the dentist that you are a nervous/anxious patient from past extractions? It might be worth while letting them know. I know some dentists specialise in that area.

I found this meditation which could help you:

Good luck 🍀

Ask your dentist, if he has an X-ray of the tooth and believes it will come out easy peasy, definitely go down that route. Upper wisdom teeth *usually!!!* come out fairly easily because they have very short roots, lower ones are more difficult.

some dentists will look at an X-ray and say NOPE I’m referring that one!

im a dental nurse!

I’ve got a wisdom tooth in the bottom left of my mouth that is driving me up the wall. I’m convinced it’s growing into my cheek. I don’t know how else to describe it. I also think it’s infected. I’m on holiday in a few weeks time and I’m desperate to get to see my dentist to see what the next steps are. I’m just mega anxious about being awake and potentially having it taken out. I just hate how all four of mine are growing in and some people get none!

Sounds horrible! I was meant to be getting mine out Friday but they’ve now managed to fit me in tomorrow. I’ve been in so much pain with it I haven’t even thought about the actual procedure and afterwards :( he said it will take about 45 mins and they will have to break the tooth up so it’s not going to be fun! Glad yours has healed and all fine now!
I was in so much pain with the wisdom tooth though in the months previous, I had to be put on a waiting list to get it removed and the dentist had put like a little cap over it until I could get it removed but it didn’t really help so I had pain on and off for about 3 months, as much as getting my wisdom tooth out was sore after, it’s really good as it’s healed fine and I’m pain free now... everyone is different, you might be completely fine. I had 2 other wisdom teeth out years ago which were nowhere near as sore. My dentist didn’t really give me much advice either on what to do to help it heal, prob didn’t help I went home and attempted to eat a Chinese that evening  Just go back to your dentist and get some of the gauze stuff put in if after a few days it’s still very sore. Good luck! You’ll be fine... I’m just a big wuss x

Thank you both!!! Really helpful. The root fillings I've had were 1hour 30 minutes so I'm trying to make myself think it cannot be longer or worse than that.

I don't mind a bit of a pain afterwards, I just am worried about the dry socket and the actual thought of it being pulled.

Did either of you ladies get a bruised face or swelling?
No bruised face here and ones was impacted so more tricky to get out. They usually give you an ice pack thing to put straight on it and then I just did the same when I got home for the first day too.

you’ll honestly be fine, and the relief of no more pain is well worth it

Hey everyone, I’m bringing up an old thread as I’ve read through and it’s really helped me!! I have an impacted wisdom tooth and also a decaying wisdom tooth, both top teeth. I didn’t go the dentist about the decaying tooth as I was so embarrassed, however when I did go I learnt it’s quite common due to position of the tooth!! Anyway, the dentist advised it’s ok to leave for now, however if it causes me any pain it’ll have to come out, along with the impacted one. It’s not causing me pain, just rubbing on my cheek where it’s quite sharp!

I am so scared of having it out under a local anaesthetic and if I have them done (which I think would be better before causing future issues) I would much prefer to have it done under a general. Those that had it done under a general anaesthetic, did you have to push for it or were they quite easy in giving it you that way? I’ve looked to go private but it’s £2.5k and I just can’t afford it with still being furloughed a year later:cry: Thanks in advance if anyone helps!!! Xx

Edit: I had teeth out when I was a teenager and the local anaesthetic didn’t work, so I felt everything! I think that’s why I’m so scared to have the wisdom teeth out under local!

Do you have a Dental Hospital near you? Ask to be referred to them. They have all the experts there and are more willing to do risky procedures more so than a normal Dentist. My son was referred for treatment the Dentist wasn't willing to risk (they're probably scared of being sued!).
I'm sure I must do, I'll check. That makes a lot of sense, thanks!

Ok, I need some advice and hopefully some positive stories! Had my dental check up this week and they did routine xrays which have shown that I need a upper right wisdom tooth removing. It has been bothering me on and off for a while but I assumed it was just coming through, they've shown me that its growing to the side and is putting pressure on the teeth next to it and they recommend extraction.
I'm at a private dentist so the cost is high, £280 to be exact. I am hoping for that price it's going to be as painless as possible. I'm terrified of having a tooth removed, its always been a fear and I would rather go through labour again!
Please give me your stories to help my fear! I haven't even booked the appointment yet as I can't bring myself to. I've had three root fillings, and the pain before each one was horrific - abscesses and infections which apparently went to the bone. I'm thinking if I can manage that, surely it cannot be too bad?!
Its the post extraction that worries me, the dry socket sounds hell.
Firstly if it’s an upper tooth there is less chance of dry socket and it’s really unlikely as long as you follow the instructions to not use straws (the sucking can dislodge the clot) and things like just tipping salt water around your mouth rather than how you would mouth wash.

if had a couple out the top was easier and I just felt a bit of pressure and they pulled it straight out and it was done in minutes. So don’t worry and don’t read the horror stories, it’s a slim chance of happening

I was just careful for a couple of days and chewed on the other side of my mouth and ate soft food, but they’ll send you home with painkillers, but I personally had no pain, if anything it was a relief to have it out.
