Ewbank is the brand name. It's the same situation as Hoover for a vacuum. There's a load a different manufacturers but 'Ewbank' was the go to brand back in the day.I remember those but I didn’t know it was called a Ewbank. I just remember it being called a sweeper or carpet sweeper.
We (my friends and I) always called that a hodadodadoda. The term must have been more widely known though, perhaps it was from a comedy show originally or something, because people would always know what we were on about. Not to worry ... it really is an old persons thingBasically a carpet sweeper.
