April 2023 for us! 🙋‍♀️ Will be inviting just over 200 guests! But it’s in Ireland (we live in England) so I imagine we will get 170 coming! I’ve been super organised and I’ve everything down to my MUA booked 😄 my question is, do I have to bring my MIL to my dress fitting? And do I have to go with her when she picks her dress? My mum has died and I’m not remotely close to my MIL so I don’t really want her at my fitting as I know it will be very emotional between me and my sisters..
Why on earth would you have your MIL law at your dress fitting?! Even if you got on well?!!! No. You definitely do not need to do that, at all!!!!!! Likewise - no, there is no requirement for you to accompany her to collect her own outfit.

Hi everyone. Been engaged to my OH for a long time and we’ve finally decided to think about planning a wedding. We don’t want anything big, fancy or mega expensive but would like it to be a nice day obviously. Im nervous about doing the ceremony in front of others as I hate public speaking, don’t want to be walked down the aisle as without going into detail, my family is sort of complicated and who ever I chose it would end up making things awkward or upsetting someone so I’d rather avoid it altogether and maybe have our kids in tow instead as flower girl/page boy. Neither of us fancy doing the traditional first dance at the reception either, we’re not really dancey sort of people and the idea makes us both cringe. Im just wondering if anyone else has picked and chose which traditions they partake in and which ones they disregard and how it went? Did anyone comment negatively or try to persuade you otherwise? Not that it matters what others think, just curious.

We want to get married but we want to do it our way and don’t want to do things that make us uncomfortable for the sake of tradition. I’m currently just browsing venues and stuff on hitched and getting a feel for the kind of prices we will be looking at. We want to keep things pretty simple and uncomplicated if that is even possible with a wedding. Anyway I look forward to catching up with the previous posts and reading everyone’s experiences!

I think it's quite common now not to have a first dance, or at least not a full dance. Sounds like you'll have a lovely day if you do it just how you guys want it! And it's a lovely idea to include your kids instead!
We're not married yet, but we aren't having confetti, a guest book, real flowers, a slow first dance song and we are having a sweetheart table for the wedding breakfast rather than a top table so we can enjoy our first meal as married couple just us! We've not had any negative feedback about the ideas! Hopefully you won't either ☺

Thanks for your reply it’s reassuring. Your wedding sounds like it will be lovely! Love the idea of having your own table to have your wedding breakfast together.

I don’t think we will be having a first dance either, as I don’t really want to do that in front of everyone.

I’m having my mum walk me down the aisle as my dad is a waste of space… you just do things the way you want to! :)

We’re barely having any guests, no dancing, no speeches, no bestman, no brides maids… just a very small ceremony in a beautiful hotel, with a lovely meal with our closest family. it’s your wedding, do what you want!

Sounds amazing! I think that’s the kind of direction we will be going in as well.

My partner has his suit fitting tomorrow, I’m going with him because I do not trust his final judgement. Have any of you gone along too?

I’ve not with my partner, but my partner is very picky about his clothes, especially suits and he wouldn’t go for it if it wasn’t perfect! 😂

Are you all hiring suits or buying? I have no idea what is the done thing for guys suits.

We are buying. But, I had a friend who got the suits from River Island when they had a discount on and honestly they were lovely, you couldn’t tell any difference. The wedding was abroad too so they weren’t too heavy.

We’re buying as my dad and the groomsmen all have dark grey suits already so just need to get my fiancé one to match! And then he can wear it for other events after

I hope you get the wedding you want! I've heard so many amazing responses from people who attended (or didn't attend but are friends with the newlyweds) the wedding of a couple who did things completely their way. It makes for a more personal occasion. I had a couple of friends who ended up eloping because covid threw a wrench into their original wedding plans and I was so happy that they go to do something so exciting and intimate and beautiful without having to deal with anyone's input or following traditions they didn't believe in.
