For those in the Fens, Pasikonik is accepting donations which they're driving to Poland this Friday and again on Monday to supply refugees: https://www.foodplus.eu/ I'm going to shop there for essential provisions and put the lot in the donation bucket. There ARE things we can do.

Does anyone follow her ? Enjoyed her content but then today shes talking about selling merch i dont know the ins and outs but it just feels sort of wrong to me ? I suppose if shes donating all money to a good cause but i dont know somthing makes me feel off about selling merchandise and profiting off war and people dying
I follow her. If she's raising money for her country then that's good for her. I don't think we can tell people how to handle this. She wouldn't be profiting off it? She already had a large following before this.

I honestly feel I have nowhere to turn or anybody to talk to about this because everyone around me just keeps saying ‘well stop watching the news then’

I do have breaks from the news, I have a one year old at home and don’t watch it during the day, only read highlights on a night.

But I’m absolutely terrified.
Don't be terrified ; Eastern Europe has had war and civil unrest for an eternity - 30 years ago it was civil war with literally over 100,000 dead and 2 million people displaced.
We are used to it, here in the West! Hence the importance of Defence measures, the MOD, NATO, etc

It all costs money , has to be paid for but its essential to protect freedom, safety and lifestyles

Oh my, the madlads actually did it. Everyone has probably forgotten, but there's been a bit of a todo in the ice skating world over Russia and the drugging and abuse of children. The sport is heavily dominated by Russia so there's been a lot of grumbling, and depair that anything would actually happen. In a move that nobody thought would actually happen, the organising body have banned Russian and Belarussian athletes, because of the war (not all the other bad stuff that they should have been banned for, but..)

Added to the hockey ban - a sport beloved by Lukashenko and Putin, these sanctions, which are small fry compared to others, are probably causing more rage than anything else.
Well done to them 👏🏼 Can anyone remember the time Putin ‘played’ with their olympic hockey team? Professional athletes, all falling over themselves to let him ‘win’. The man is an overgrown toddler who can’t cope with any competition or challenge whatsoever.

Iv been watching her lives and she's been telling people she already has money she's already established. Her and her family have taken people in etc. Iv been enjoying watching her. I don't think there's anything malicious going on, it's her home.

Enjoy is probably the wrong word but her updates and lives have been informative and I like her.

Here's a little reminder of why Ukrainians do not want to be part of the USSR redux. 1932/33 is still within living memory

Millions of Ukrainians starved to death, and then there was another famine in 1946/7 which killed nearly one million. The 1970s also saw increased repression as "Following the signing of the international Helsinki Accords, with their human rights provisions, in 1975, the Helsinki Watch Group was founded in Ukraine, headed by the poet Mykola Rudenko; by the end of the 1970s, its members were almost all in concentration camps or in exile abroad. The expirations of political prisoners’ sentences were increasingly followed by rearrest and new sentences on charges of criminal activity. Incarceration in psychiatric institutions became a new method of political repression."

Try and rationalise it out a bit. What is it that’s scaring you in particular? If it’s nuclear war; it’s really not going to happen. The cost for anyone involved is too great regardless of who strikes first.

The news will always be if the most shocking scenes and the tone always the most sombre because that’s what these organisations do - pull you in to view them and rely on them for information. No news outlet is being straight with you.

I feel like it does get a bit feverish online at times, people are very emotionally invested, understandably. I try to scroll by some of the more jingoistic things as I myself could easily get swept up in the mood and I need to keep a critical eye on everything I see in politics. I’m very much anti-war, I want civilians to be safe, and there’s more than one way to skin a cat as they say.

Please don’t be frightened. ❤

This is the first time I am commenting on this thread so apologies if it has been covered.

Any thoughts on whether Xi Jinping will denounce Putin's actions? I know there is talk that they are allies but are they really? Surely Xi must be concerned about his neighbour's actions given that his economy is so intrinsically linked to Western nations?

If he did - it will either take the wind out of Putin's sails OR he will feel backed into a corner and do something rash.

Why had Ukraine not applied to be part of the EU before now? I know they were keen but surely they could have applied anyway?

tried to ignore this thread because I’m just so worried but I have to ask…
im assuming countries know what they’re doing by crippling Russia financially and walking out when Lavrov was speaking at the UN earlier…surely these things could tip Putin over the edge? i see people on here saying don’t worry about things going nuclear but it does seem that other countries are pushing and pushing, so I assume they have a plan to stop ww3? otherwise they’re just poking the beast

Putins actions are deplorable but there’s no doubt to me he’s been antagonised by us since 2018ish. Zelenskyy is a Western supported leader, and our leaders are shitbags too.

A thought just popped in my head. Remember in recent years Russian aircraft bring “escorted” out of British airspace? Sonic booms as our Air Force scramble? I wonder now if that was a preamble to this, a warning if you were.

You could argue the opposite. Rather than antagonise Putin, the west has empowered him… World leaders appearing alongside him, posing for photographs… It’s almost like his actions in Crimea were legitimised.

I think I’m more terrified of nuclear war than anything else, especially with reports of Putin being so unstable I feel like the odds are not in our (the worlds) favour at all.

And I know it’s stupid thoughts but I keep having thoughts like can ANYONE survive a nuclear war? Can Putin and his men go into space and escape the end of the world as we know it? Is that why he doesn’t care? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I get that it sounds so completely ridiculous but that’s the thoughts I’m having 😔

I’m just glad my 1 year old is so oblivious, I can’t imagine having to explain this to a child that can understand (even if only partly) what is going on.

Sorry if I ask ridiculous questions, I know I’m not as educated as you clever lot but I guess I’m just looking for reassurance!

The alternative is to let Putin get away with it. We're already in WW3. Let Putin destroy Ukraine and it'll be Estonia, Latvia, Estonia and Poland next.

Russia is losing all of her soft power and international credibility. On the international stage, these things matter. This is not 'poking the beast'.

A good point made here by Guy Verhohstadt.
