Ita madness! I had heard about teachers there doing other jobs during summer and didn't get it until I saw a post on social media asking how they managed during summer. The US really is a disaster for normal workers
I’ve realised over the last ten years that the US is a tit show for many reasons. Crippling inequality, rabid love of guns, war mongering and blind patriotism is a horror show.

I’ve done it once and had a marital grape case and a child sex abuse case. It was well over ten years ago now and I still remember some of the minute details of the cases down to names, addresses, actions etc. It definitely sticks with you and although I did enjoy the overall process, I’m definitely with you on preferring to having had an easier case to work with.
Have you been excused from future jury duty because of having to serve on a CSA case? (Apologies If already been answered, haven’t got to the end of the thread yet)

I served on a domestic abuse case. It was quite awful to have to watch it in court and hear his excuses…was going to go on to describe the infuriating thing what happened in the jury decision room but I believe that might be against the law?🫢

Not sure what they would have done if you just had a panic attack or something during the trial lol. Presumably that would be a medical reason to be allowed to duck out at the point.
If the trial had started and one of the jurors was medically excused because of a panic attack or another reason, the whole trial would be thrown out and restarted with 12 new jurors not privy to the case.

I hope they tell jurors the nature of the case before they start, surely grape survivors shouldn’t have to be a juror on a grape case, for example. There’s a duty of care to the jurors surely.

I’ve not been asked to jury duty yet, my husband has, his was about an accident, one that made the press. He could only tell me about it afterwards, but he said it was quite tiring because a lot of technical evidence was given, in such technical detail, it was hard to keep up with it all apparently.

If I ever do get called up I hope it is for something mundane like theft.

Sounds like my ex.
Its because they only eat vegetables and that doesn't give them much energy so they need to eat loads and then poo loads. I love a daily poo but 40 would just be awkward to fit in wouldn't it.

Im trying to remember my case. I know they definitely sort of announced what it was about beforehand, because they asked if any of us worked in “X/X/X/X/X” occupations and one person said yes to one of them and were removed from the jury and placed in another one due to the case having to be as impartial as possible.

i agree with your husband, it is so mentally draining to have to keep up with everything. It’s like listening to a long, dull story that boring people are telling you, repeatedly going over it again and again, and telling it to you in different, leading ways, but you can’t zone out for a minute and have to pay attention at all times because there is the worlds most important test at the end. I felt doubly tired after a day of jury than I did a day of work

It was never mentioned that we were excused after that one case. It was my first of the two cases in my two week duty so it didn’t excuse me straight away so I’m guessing not. As intense as it was, I would do it all again if I was asked.

I think I vaguely remember standing in the court room with more than the selected 12 jurors to be given an overview of the case. At that point you could say if you had links to any of those involved and would be excused. They then picked the final 12 from those left. I was the last one to be selected for the jury, that I do remember.

i think that rule is reserved for extreme cases, like a child murder or sexual assault and being forced to look at all evidence, if there is any

This was exactly the same as my experience too

This is embarrassing, however I learnt what Fubar meant! My husband couldn't believe I didn't know what it meant. Now I will go hide under the rock I seem to have been living under for God knows how long!

I learnt that from Gogglebox last night too!

Actually that mustn't be the case as one of the jury I was on was allowed to leave as she was going on holiday and the trial overran by a few days. We carried on with 11 jurors.

That is extremely odd and nothing I have ever heard of in a court of law. Maybe they thought it was low-level and unworthy to stop continuing with 11. Someone more experienced can confirm but I thought that was illegal in a court of law. Google says:

After the inquest hearing starts

Once the inquest starts, all the jurors must be in court for every session. This is to make sure that everyone hears the same evidence. You cannot take a day away for illness or personal reasons and then come back.

2 years! What legally would happen with your job in this situation? Do they have to hold it for you?!
Yes they do, and if they don’t and sack you, you can take them to an employment tribunal and a judge will not look too kindly on any employer making someone unemployed for carrying out their legal duty of service.

Societally we need to demand people dial in their hubris and stop climbing mountains that have religious significance. 😑

And are you paid the same as your normal salary?
