I can't stop thinking about the fact they might still be alive. I know it's wildly impractical but you'd want to be sent down with a cyanide capsule in case something like this were to happen.

It's perfectly possible to feel sympathy for the very wealthy. Some of the behaviour I have seen online has been reprehensible. Don't tell me I have to make a choice between feeling sorry for this and the migrant boat in Greece that sank - empathy, thank God, is not a finite resource.

I read something really interesting about this (no matter their wealth I also hope to god they’re found), about the psychology of empathy, how this is 5 people and it’s easier to relate to 5 people going through this (in real time no less) than 500. That’s a very very brief summary but interesting I thought.

I've long held the view that there is such a thing as too rich, and that the super wealthy never get to be where they are by behaving ethically. So, yeah - I hate the rich.

But regardless, these are human beings and this story is utterly horrific. I am terrified of man-made things in deep water (if that makes sense?) so it's made me feel sick to think of going down to gawp at the wreck, but thinking of what these men have experienced as time ticks away is just too awful to contemplate.

I’m due to go on a cruise next month and have to say although I would never pull out of it all these water disasters and anything that’s gone before it really does freak me out. I say this not as a joke and not to be over dramatic but the sea is a cruel mistress. You just don’t know what’s ahead of you.

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head.

The super rich have a different mentality and attitude to risk. We see the successful ones but there will be many more of a similar mentality who's gamble didn't pay off.

On this occasiona the super rich gambled and it didn't pay off. If it had paid off they would have had their contacts flocking to them at the next networking event, desperate to talk to and throw money at the guy who saw titanic.

It is sad that they have most likely lost their lives though. They will be missed by their close friends and families (likely with the exception of the freeloading step son)

Something has gone very very wrong here, I know several people who have done the channel swim and they say how long it takes to plan it, the amount of people involved etc. usually they watch the swimmers very closely to look for any changes in pace, stoke because that can give you a clue as to how the swimmer is doing.

Apparently that's the protocol if you're stuck and need help. Every half hour you bang the walls for 3 minutes.

Apparently that is a naval technique, but there's every chance that noises being detected are nothing to do with the vessel.

Yup, too regular could be mistaken for something working nearby on drilling or cable laying. My only explanation would be that if they did it at regular intervals, the rescuers could be waiting for the next set of bangs to try and locate

Has this been mentioned? The US Coast Guard thinks oxygen will run out at 12.08pm on Thursday. I know it's been said loosely how many days' oxygen there is but that's the first time I've seen anyone do the sums and give a precise time

I’ve never been brave enough to do one. I’ve seen plenty in Southampton when we’ve been down there and some of the ships are so big they make me feel ill. We were down there a month ago and I said I’d push myself to book up next year but I don’t think I will now. I know they don’t just tip over but the thought of all that sea beneath you, or being trapped like these poor souls makes me too anxious to try.
