Apparently self diagnosis is valid. You wouldn't go around self diagnosing yourself with cancer so why is a developmental disability ok?No you’re right and it devalues the needs of ones that actually do. Ooh I can’t concentrate at work I’m self diagnosing myself with ADHD- nah babe you know your whole life if you’re neurodiverse, you spend your whole childhood wondering why you don’t fit in
Me neither. Neither does anyone I'm friends with. All ads and articlesNo, I certainly don't. Just 4 groups and an elderly relative abroad who still posts the occasional thing
As a qualified health care professional myself,I'd question anyone who has self diagnosed, as to why they hadn't sought a professional diagnosis?I've encountered people who had self diagnosed because they wanted a 'label',but official diagnosis was not giving what they wanted. There are so many reasonsApparently self diagnosis is valid. You wouldn't go around self diagnosing yourself with cancer so why is a developmental disability ok?
I used to know someone who claimed he was Autistic because he was good at maths which isn't part of the criteria. I've got friends with Autism who are average at maths and better at arts subjects. I've got a friend who is good at maths who I don't think is Autistic.
I don't know, probably because it takes 45 mins to even speak to a receptionist at a GP surgery and then 3 weeks for an appointment during which you're fobbed off with 'more sleep and exercise'?As a qualified health care professional myself,I'd question anyone who has self diagnosed, as to why they hadn't sought a professional diagnosis?I've encountered people who had self diagnosed because they wanted a 'label',but official diagnosis was not giving what they wanted. I completely agree with you, believe me I can understand the frustration just trying to get an appointment. I've experienced the same frustrstion/anger myself when trying to get help for a family member. The family part of me wants to play merry hell to get something done the professional side is equally pissed off because patients with mental health and medical conditions are sometimes being failed. Quite often misuse of services by individuals means genuine patients can't get the support they need.My issue with self diagnosis is when the person needs/wants attention, uses illness to get the attention and they know they won't get the diagnosis they want from a health care professional.I don't know, probably because it takes 45 mins to even speak to a receptionist at a GP surgery and then 3 weeks for an appointment during which you're fobbed off with 'more sleep and exercise'?
(I hate the self diagnosis trend, especially for children, but just to point out that people who really are struggling with mental illnesses face incredible barriers to get themselves in front of understanding healthcare professionals)
Yeah I never get why people WANT to be sick? If they were actually sick they wouldn’t want to beI completely agree with you, believe me I can understand the frustration just trying to get an appointment. For some people it's the only way to get attention/sympathyYeah I never get why people WANT to be sick? If they were actually sick they wouldn’t want to be![]()
Must be some kind of self protection mechanism. If they are ill then it means any failings on their side are due to that, not due to the fact they are lazy, less smart than they believe, or have another character flaw etc.Yeah I never get why people WANT to be sick? I think it’s just a modern form of Hypochrondia. The old biddies used to go on and on about their ailments. Now younger people diagnose themselves with MH issuesMust be some kind of self protection mechanism. Ffs, why do I never get this content![]()
