Hi all! I’m looking to get an apple watch to help track my workouts, I’ve been looking at the Series 3 one (since it’s the cheapest lol) but just wondering if there’s any benefits to getting a more recently released one? Or if the differences are only minor? Sorry if this is off topic, it was the first fitness thread I saw!
I have an apple watch and I dont think they are the best (scientifically) for tracking workouts - but I have never had any issues tracking run, spin, swim or weight lifting, sure it may not be 100% accurate but its fine for me. I like it because it ties in with my phone/laptop which are also apple and I think they look the nicest of the 'sport watches' haha. I have a 4 but my whole family have 3s and apart from the 4/newer ones looking slightly sleeker and doing ECG heart recordings I don't think there is any difference at all. Obviously worth considering the older an apple product the shorter life it has left with regards to updates etc but given they are still selling them I suspect they have a while. I think I saw an apple watch SE released which is cheaper than the 6 (if this is the current one) but slightly more probably than a 3 but maybe worth considering with the update consideration!

Well, I did it, I have just finished week 3, run 3.

So hard but I have never even got this far.

It's just such a jump. And I'm very slow.

Will be repeating this week mind you!

After failing to get up at 6 this morning 🥱 I dragged myself out at half 5 this evening immediately after getting in from work and I felt so self conscious having to run past loads of pedestrians on my route! I definitely need to stick to early mornings. I also got catcalled by men in a white van and idk if they were honking and yelling because I'm fat or just because I'm a woman. Or both! 😂 got way better times today, average 7:30 min per k but think it'll be a while until I'm back to my 6:30 min k's. Just need to squeeze half an hour in at the weekend, will aim for 4k ☺

A lot of the staff in running shops will try and sell you the most expensive pair, alongside insoles, socks etc.

I’ve worn Nike Pegasus (neutral shoe) for 10+ years, and have never had any problems. I only buy them in the sale, and have never paid more than £75

There’s no evidence to suggest that changing or rotating shoe models gives you any benefit / makes you less injury prone. So once you’ve got a model you like, you can just repurchase the same model whenever you need a new pair. No need to reinvent the wheel and spend a small fortune.

Also, unless you’re running sub-15 5k for men, and sub-18 5k for women, and racing multiple times a month, please don’t believe the Nike Next% / Vaporfly hype. A lot of magazines and blogs have been promoting them as part of their ‘get fit in 2021’ articles, and they have no idea what they’re talking about!

Super late to this thread, but I’m obsessed with running!

For those struggling with motivation, don’t tell yourself you have to run for X minutes, or X kilometres, just go out and see how you feel. Sometimes you might only feel like running around the block, and that’s ok- there will be days when you feel great and want to run for ages. Either way, you’re still out there doing it!
This mentality saves me. I usually do the same route 4-5 times a week, but sometimes I'll only complete 3k out of the 6k I plan to do because I'm tired from work etc. If I pressure myself I find I run less distance because I'm all in my head rather than in the run itself

Morning 👋 I started running since the start of the first lockdown and my goal was to run the miles of a half marathon and yesterday I ran my longest run ever 13.5 miles 🥳 but all last night and this morning Iv been a tad emotional 😭 the slightest little thing and my eyes are filling up. There is absolutely no reason for feeling this way, has it anything to do with my run yesterday??
Awwww you just did an amazing thing! I remember after my first half I was crying so much from all the emotion a lady came over to check whether I was okay and gave me the biggest hug. I had a pretty good cry around 30km in my first marathon too when what I was doing finally hit me.

Let yourself feel the emotion. It may not make sense to be crying but it's your body's way of releasing all the emotion that went into the training and race.

Also congratulations!!!

I went for a run yesterday - week 6 run 2. Consisted of 2 10 min runs with a 3 min walk in between - I was very impressed with myself.only my 2nd run since August and wasn’t too bad - no more little walk breaks anymore which worries me a little !
I’ve done c25k twice now, and I’m always surprised how well the plan works. It’s always a leap of faith but you can do it, your body has trained for it this far :)

Ive experienced some real dicks out running. I run with my dad as we live together and we always drop single file when approaching people or hop on the road. But the amount of people who walk 2/3 in a row and don’t budge then glare at you is incredible, we’ve also had a lot of people shouting we shouldn’t be together or should wear masks etc all from people also not wearing masks outside! I find some people walking with others just don’t care about trying to move out your way not only to respect the 2m thing but also to help you not having to run half in a tree. People seem to think walking is okay but running is evil.

I started in June but had to stop because of niggling injuries. Got up to the end of week 6 last time. There was a nice surprise which I won’t spoil for you. When I got back to it I started on week 4 but although I could do it i didn’t feel right so around Xmas I deleted it all and started again. I’m noticeably fitter than last time although no quicker.

I’ve just started Couch to 5k and did week 1 run 2 today. I’m horribly unfit but thought this would be a good idea. I’m finding it hard going, the last two runs are tough. For those who’ve done it before - is it worth me repeating week 1 until I can comfortably run all 8 runs before I progress to week 2?
When you get further on they say that running through the last run when you are tired is what builds your stamina. I have thought about rerunning weeks again but managed to get through. Week two you run a little longer but rest a little more. It’s designed to build you up.
My advice would be try it. If you can’t do it all you can go back to week one. You might surprise yourself. There are loads of people that say they didn’t think they could do some of the runs, myself included. If you do it the sense of achievement will be huge. If you can’t there’s no shame. At least you are trying to get fit.

Hello :)

I am about to finish a "Couch to 5K" podcast. 😎
The thing is, I should have actually been able to run 5K on day one... I have a basic level of fitness, but I am so lazy!
What helped me a lot is this friendly voice spurring me on "only 60 seconds left", "you can do it", "now walk for three minutes and catch your breath" etc and the fact that it was kind of "policed" that I ran the time I was told to run.

So now I wonder if there is something like a "follow-up" podcast? Or running podcasts that tell you when you ran a certain time, that motivate you during the run, that have different music etc?

How do you all run? With music, in silence, with podcasts?
Thanks for your advice :)
The Nike run club app has guided runs, you can choose by distance or time, some of them also talk you through things like fartlek. I use that quite a lot and think it’s pretty good, plus you can listen to your music at the same time

I can send them normally but it says your settings are super private. BTW you should be able to send them if you're over 200 posts. I got over that and still couldn't but asked in the help section and they enabled it.
Ah okay thank you I’ll have a look at my settings 🧐

Ran my first 10k this morning since like August! Didn’t plan to run that far but just kept going. Did it in just under an hour and ten. Really happy with my progress the last few weeks, only thing is I’m working from home and the real challenge will be fitting it in around my normal work schedule with the lack of daylight. It’s mostly unlit where I am so I don’t feel particularly safe in the dark.

Has anyone got any good recommendations for stability trainers to help correct overpronation? Preferably ones that aren’t too pricy.

I currently wear Hoka One Arahis but they start to give me blisters on the bottom of my foot if I do anything above 5k:(
That may be the fit of them/ your running socks rather than the trainers themselves.

Also 'correcting overpronation' is a bit of a myth these days - most people do better in neutral shoes as that helps you develop the muscles you need for stability. As always, get into a running shop if you can and get fitted properly. They'll also let you try multiple pairs of shoes so the sometimes higher price (aka no discounts) is worth it in my opinion because you know you're walking out with a shoe that 100% works for you. If running shops are closed due to a lockdown, get someone to take a video of you running (capturing from the knees down) and see if you can get that analysed online/ sent to a running store.

Lastly - spend money on your shoes! They're the most important thing in your aresenal and if fitted properly will prevent you getting injured. Skimp on clothing etc etc but don't skimp on runners - they're the one slightly expensive part to the sport.

In terms of stability shoes these are my own experiences. My all time favourite shoes are the Saucony Guide 13s - they're stability shoes. The brooks equivalents Adrenaline/ Ravena aren't bad either (I prefer the guides though). I know the asics gel kayanos are very popular as well but I've never run in them.

I was so glad to see this thread but then I saw everyones times and goals and immediately felt like a potato 😂
I go through phases with running. At the moment
I can do between 5-7k but I am SO slow! My pace is usually somewhere between 7:25-7:44 per km. I used to be able to run at a 6:15 pace so not sure what happened there as I’ve never trained this regularly before so I really thought I would
be improving.

Completed c25k last year. Managed to put on 2 stone in the last 9 months being lazy, eating too much and being depressed due to various life events. So im back doing c25k, heavier than last time but I was doing ok but its raining all the time and I cant run in the rain 😕 fingers crossed for some dry weather so I can get back to it and hopefully start to shed some of this weight

Well done everyone!!!

I did W4R3 today and my boyfriend tagged along - it was quite nice to have company and we were a fairly matched pace (which is also annoying as he hasn't done any exercise for months 😡).

My new Asics arrived today and they TRANSFORMED my run - my legs don't feel like death so thank you very much for the recommendations :D

I ended up running 25km last week :D I am annoyed with myself for not starting back up sooner. It was the weather which was putting me off mainly, I forgot it's fine once you get going. Been loving the fresh air and it's done wonders for my skin too it looks so much brighter!

I downloaded Strava again which I haven't used in years (was met with a post of my ex boyfriend's recent bike ride, lovely 😂) and signed up to the December 100km challenge 😬 hope I can do it.

Gyms back open from Wednesday - not sure what to do about this. I find running on the treadmill mind numbing but it is good for working on speed. My membership has expired too so I'll have to drop £250 on it as well, don't really need that just before Christmas! Tempted to just stick to running outdoors 🤷‍♀️
Honestly just run outdoors! Some days it'll suck but as long as you acknowledge this before hand and just accept it you'll do fine 😊
