I went out yesterday, week 6, run 2 (think someone else is at the same stage, I am also worried about the 20 min run with no walking break next).

I actually went further than the app needed me too, do ran a bit more. I covered 4.8km (didn't look til I got in the house, so was a bit annoyed that I didn't get to 5) and though I didn't run it all, I definitely ran at least 4km.

I ate 2 slices of toast an hour before I went out, one with peanut butter and the other with jam and I think it worked. Out again tomorrow afternoon 😀

Today in my couch to 10k journey I ran 20 solid minutes not stopping. TWENTY. 7 weeks ago a couple of minutes was enough to wipe me off and now I can do 20!!! I think I am running slightly faster than the pace it wants you to run at, which so far hasn't been a problem but may be something I need to consider going further (apart from the 5'49 K i did the other day which was ridiculously fast as I usually sit around 6'49).

So glad i have found this thread! On and off ‘runner’ for years now but only through the beginning of first lockdown up until now i have really stuck to it...although i am still rubbish. Weightlifter at heart but i do love how running makes me feel after! I can only manage 5k at around 28 mins but am trying to push for 10k, it’s just that i get bored when i run and just thinking about the end 🥴

I have also spent the best part of a year looking for some decent running trainers, i just bought the adidas ultra boosts but i like a lot of comfort and bounce, and i tried them on and instantly knew they weren’t going to do it for me.

I’m tempted to get the on-running trainers, anyone had them?
I went to a proper place to get my trainers and had gait analysis done etc - and it really has changed my running, and my ankle stability! I would recommend this if you can hold off getting new ones until shops can reopen.

Any advice would be very appreciated - recently I seem to be getting injuries so often after runs. It’s usually my ankles/ shins/ knees.
My trainers are only a few months old and really supportive, I’ve been giving myself time to recover if I do get an injury and not run on it but it seems like everytime I get back to running, I get another injury!
Obviously can’t diagnose, but in my experience shin pain (other than a tibial stress fracture which you would know about) is often referred pain from another area. Calves being too tight, Achilles etc. This could be due to biomechanics (which could be dealt with by going to a running shop with a treadmill and gait analysis) or just imbalances leading to one area overcompensating when you run (a physio could tell by simple exercises what you are and aren’t engaging when you run).

Hope you get it sorted. 🙂

I really want to start running but I’m worried that I’m too obese. I have been going for walks after work every day but find them hard work so probably have a way to go before I can run but have been reading some of the great advice on here in the meantime!
Anyone can run if they want too!!!! I run in places people I know wouldn’t see me & the evenings are lighter now so go for it!! Don’t let anything stop you. Defiantly recommend using a couch 2 5K app!

How do people run in the cold? I’m merely a beginner so I’m not used to it and haven’t adapted yet 😩😩😩
I take a light zip up hoodie out with me, then I can easily take it off and tie round waist if I get too warm. It's only cold for the first few mins, the hardest part is getting yourself out when you know it's cold!

Hello! I hope I can join this thread☺
I did nothing last lockdown and am determined to use these few months we are locked down to get fitter!

ive never been a runner, I just don’t have any stamina so ive been building up slowly. I started running for a couple of minutes and then walking.

I can now run for 15 minutes without stopping! It’s on a treadmill at 5mph pace so I’m sure it’s easier than road running but I’m definitely proud of myself!

I face planted the pavement for the first time in a year this morning at the half way point of my run. Sat and cried for a minute through shock more than anything and was going to keep running but then when I got up my knee felt sore (have a nice lump and graze on it) so decided to walk home.

Not 100% if that's the right thing to have done because I feel guilty for not finishing the run 😂 and embarrassed as school run mums checked on me haha.

Going to see how the knee is tomorrow before deciding to have a rest day or not!

Thanks for the mention!

I’ve always been a terrible runner. When I was younger I couldn't even run between two lamp posts! However the other year I decided to train to run to 5k without stopping and actually did it. I loved how it made me feel and being able to accomplish a fitness goal that felt so out of reach was incredible. Unfortunately, I haven't really improved too much since then but still regularly run.

My goals are:
- run 5k in under half an hour
- run a 10k without stopping

Does anyone have any tips to reach either of these goals?

I’m so glad this was made!
I'm the same tbh, I'm quite happy plodding along on a 5k. Not very fast either. But everyone runs for different reasons and gets different things out of it :) which is why it's so great!
There is a 'bridge to 10k' app I believe that follows on from the couch to 5k, I haven't used it myself but my sister used it for her 10ks and it worked a treat

I run in a big jacket, I'm always cold 😂 but it's not too bad now and it was lovely on the weekend.

I finally run my first 10k last week and managed in under 59 minutes so we'll happy with that!!

I got some new trainers at the weekend and the shop was so helpful - must have tried about 15 pairs on and the guy was super knowledgeable and told me mine had too much support and my new pair are so much better already!

Getting out the door and running is the important part, don’t worry about times and distance, enjoy being outside, feeling alive, clearing our mind and briefly forgetting what’s going on in our lives and world 🙏🏻

I haven't posted here for agggggggges. I refuses to run over summer cos it was too hot, but decided I don't have that excuse anymore.

I also got a puppy in April, so want to start going out with her. The dogs normally get me up around 6am, so I think my plan is to run a mile a day. Nothing too taxing, but I think I'm more likely to actually do it if I'm not focussing on doing 5km. Will I get fitter though?
You’ll get fitter but be careful with running every day if you’re not used to it - I would give yourself rest days/walk in between days until your body is used to the impact. Or just do varying run/walk intervals to mix it up! Depending on the breed most dogs aren’t recommended to run until at least 1 year old - especially not if on lead. Larger breeds need to be older 🙂 it is great fun to run with the dogs though and mine love it!

I did it! 1 min running /1.15 walking x15 and it was a lot more enjoyable than I expected after six weeks. Missed the endorphins ☺

LOVE this thread, thanks for starting ☺
I started running over Lockdown 1.0 doing C25k, mainly cos I was putting on weight since I wasn't on my feet all day at work. Really enjoyed it and did wonders for my anxiety (even started weaning of my meds), but then I injured my ankle, went back to work, hurt my back and just lost my mojo. Started again on Saturday and it felt amazing and went out again today, so definitely going to try and keep it up. Using the C210K this time and started on week 5.

My biggest problem is fuel. I have to eat before a run or I feel faint, but then need to leave long enough to digest, or I feel sick! I can't work out the best time of day to go out. Considered getting sports powder to drink while I'm running, but overwhelmed by the options.

Well done
About the same level as me then. But judging by your user name you encounter a lot of hills. I live in the Fens and it’s flat as a pancake
Cool, hey running bud!
I actually live in a very flat part of Germany! I hate hills and mountains. Still haven’t reached the top of Snowdon 😂

I really love Adidas Ultraboost, I have a high arch to my feet and every other pair of trainers I’ve ever tried have made the sole of my foot feel like it’s splitting down the middle vertically. Ultraboost are the best I’ve tried, feels like I’m flying!

Anyone getting out today 🥴 I’ve committed to running 50 miles in January
I got my running gear on, warmed up, stepped outside and nearly slipped on my face. Tried to walk to the path I thought wouldn't have ice on because it's a rough track, but really unsafe, so walked home again like Bambi 😂

Isn’t it the BEST feeling when you run further than you thought possible? I cried the first time I finished couch to 5k, but my first runners high was running for 8 minutes non stop in the snow ☺

That might be the secret to increasing pace!
Hahaha I can confirm it does 😬 I would not recommend it though!

Just joining this thread as I didn't realise it existed and was pleased to see it here! Hey guys!

If it is super cold I wear a long sleeve running jacket over a long sleeve top, leggings to the ankles, and then gloves. I'm lucky with having thick hair so I don't tend to wear a hat, and then my headphones act as a type of ear muff  However, I always run for the second mile, because you warm up so quickly and the worst thing is overheating and having to faff about getting undressed on your run.
Welcome ☺

Although I’ve been running regularly for 5 years I still cannot dress myself properly and either end up too cold or too sweaty. there is no in between! At least with layers you can de-layer - I usually finish runs with my gloves shoved down my bra 😂

Yes. I’ve been running on and off for about four years, I started with Couch to 5k in 2016 and did race for life after it. I sort of let it slide after that though and only did occasional quick runs around the block and started doing more strength training instead. When lockdown happened I decided with gyms closed to work on it getting back into it properly and fairly quickly got back up to 5k. Then I decided to improve on that and am now aiming for 10k but seem to be stuck at about 7k at the moment, I can’t really get passed that and if I try to ‘run through it‘ I feel like im going to faint. I know it’s just the wall again, but it’s never lasted so long in the past. Any advice on how to get past it would be appreciated.

At the moment I’m running 5k in under 40 minutes.
I'm sure we've all been struggling to get past that formidable barrier, and I think its something to do with lack of glycogen or too much fluid loss, which can lean to muscle cramps and general fatigue.

I suppose it also depends on pacing and the kind of terrain you're running on - flat, hilly or both. Add to that the weather conditions - cold, warm, humid; and your general sense of well-being. In other words are you in the right frame of mind.

It doe take time and patience, and trial & error, but you will break through the wall. And once you've done it a couple of times the rest of the run is a breeze

Good luck!
