Specsfest seemed more brief this week and definitely more brand-focused, no? Definitely trying to usher that ever-likely collab her way. Howeverrrrr - these look great on her! Classic shape, solid black frame against her bright her and lipstick looks GOOD! And weirdly no tag or mention of where they’re from, in a sea of glasses chat. Maybe they’re old and from before my time? Or are they about to be flogged to us?! (Hilariously timed side note: did actually just buy myself some new specs. As a lifelong 4-eyes I’ve stayed mostly out of this specific conversation because frankly her whole approach to the glasses thing is just plain pathetic and boring and a bit clueless, but also The Internet exists so I order fab but FRUGAL frames online for like £20-60 a pop…!)
I’d love some recommendations for sites that sell frames at those prices. Can you try on at home and then send back if not suitable?

I didn’t like her boots with her nice dress. She posted an old reel or video tonight with shoes and gosh she had fab taste and put together casual glam so well. She’s lost it now. Her move into home and kids influencing is lost,
Yes I thought this too. She used to nail that cool, casual, glam look.

Buy cheap buy twice, this is best advice someone has ever given to me. Her advice on money saving is toxic, it is a constant one-upping her peers.
Buy an Aesop hand soap and refill it, so you can play rich.
Put on some shelves because you are too lazy to tidy and bad in planning for additional storage.
Buy loads of small ticket items that will end up costing you a lot.

It's the positioning of herself as someone who is much less well off or 'frugal' than they are in. I think in her recent newsletter she said something about how they have to save to make 'Christmas affordable for us'. It just really grates!

Oh that shelf is so ridiculous. It’s like she’s built the Great Wall of China. She will just have more busy crap on there. They need storage cupboards. Idiots

I love your post + generally posts, I recognise your name. Agree re treat - the way they live is just SO bizarre, she may as well admit it’s a continuation of rich student life and just write for that cohort? They exist, so go get them!

I’m not doing an Alex and whinging about a lack of money btw as it’s not the case, it’s just as someone who’s worked our way into her position her advice/content for us is laughable, it really is. The cost of our childcare will never go down as we’re not eligible for any schemes etc (and we shouldn’t be, but let me land on this!) but what makes me laugh is this low level influencer set using their free hours or tax free vouchers to put their kids in childcare so they can compare Lick paint samples to tell us to buy? Seriously duck off 😂 the government should look into gifted cash as part of income and give these rich kids’ allowances to mums on UC who have found the cost of childcare prohibitive to returning to work.

The whole thing is a joke. Tbh in the same way I had no interest in being friends with these spoilt brats at uni I don’t know why I’m now viewing their “grown up” content on Insta.
This!! I spent 3 years at my fancy university avoiding this nonsense (mainly because I worked practically full time) and here I find myself on my precious minutes off pondering her life?! But whilst I’m on the subject....We’ve also worked ourselves into a position of real privilege, high salaries, good area to live in etc but without parental support we’ve got a gigantic mortgage that will likely be with us till retirement. We earn way more than she claims to buy don’t seem to have nearly as much disposable income. I’m certainly not buying cashmere hats and hall mirrors at anywhere near the rate she is, takeaways or meals out are still considered and holidays planned and saved for. We’re not even particularly good with money and we’re generous with family (most of who have a pritty different set up). I absolutely wouldn’t claim to be frugal. There’s something that just absolutely does not add up about their set up, unless that is they have a tiny mortgage and aren’t thinking about things like pensions because they know they’re going to inherit? I honestly quite enjoy the lives of the rich and famous on insta when they’re honest about it all. It’s the hidden wealth that makes everyone else feel a bit tit about themselves that is just the pits.

Agree - I think a huge problem is their expectations versus their reality, pineapple said it perfectly but she’s surrounded by her private school peers who went on to marry well so do put in their quarterly Aesop orders as just a matter of household admin whereas it’s something they have to accommodate by reducing food costs, for example. Penny pinching to splash out on coveted Insta items isn’t something the comfortable do, and it’s not something those just getting by or struggling do, so who is this content even for?!

And ignoring the huge privilege in having financial security you’ve not earnt yourself! Mad!

Yep! Pretty much nail on the head, wouldn’t be surprised if their mortgage was in the hundreds tbh. She’s also spoken about putting stuff on credit cards, again that’s cool and not a potential financial catastrophe as mum and dad can always pay it off.

And same - literally this morning I said to my husband why does it feel like we’ve got no disposable income right now and it’s a lack of gratitude on our part in fairness because we’re choosing to ignore fixed costs like house, cars, nursery, savings / investments / crypto, having a kid, etc etc. But now I’ve returned to work (despite “not needing to”) my entire salary is dedicated to savings for us. I can’t imagine the privilege of having parents that’ll pay school fees & deposits & help us out, I will never ever ever know financial security like her because it’s not something you can work towards, you’re born into it.

Can I ask how do we know her parents are loaded and paid for her mortgage. Sorry if I missed a large chunk when this was explained. Just so annoyed as I bought into the whole frugal thing years ago and keep finding this stuff out and getting more and more annoyed. Influencer culture is the worst but a well off girl claiming to be frugal with all the gifted items just sends me over the edge.

@heretoreaditall2019 and @Exhaustednurse just wanted to say that your posts on this thread about how tough the early years are in terms of costs/money are absolutely saving my sanity right now. The only other parents I know have family help (either financially or in terms of childcare) and we feel like we're dying on our arses despite having fairly decent salaries. Thank you for helping me see that this won't last forever and that we're not unusual in feeling so stretched. And agree that these influencers are the same posh girls at uni (we called them rahs) that always made me feel like tit and I actively avoided - time to actively avoid them on Insta now too!

Omg RAHS what a blast from the past ❤😂 I haven’t heard that term since early 2010s when I left what feels like a very similar uni to you both, but yep! Precisely that.

Same, we have no access to free childcare or discounted and whilst we are incredibly lucky that it’s not a financial stretch or stopped us doing anything else we want to, it’s a big payment amongst the rest of the relentless outgoings you have to manage as an adult? Like paying for the mortgage, home improvements, home maintenance (like an annual £250 home alarm service that’s necessary to get the specialist insurance we have), sorting out junior savings accounts vs yours, then the forecasting activities - does it make more sense to save X or overpay mortgage X, playing with overpayment calculators, looking at remortgaging early to take advantage of lower interest rates, thinking about inflation, like just never ending tit going in your brain like an electronic ticker and then you have someone who hasn’t got a care in the world pushing hyper consumption on us alongside “financial advice” and I just think duck me not only do you not know you’re born, you just don’t have a clue?! Like personal finance to them starts and ends at how much Instagrammable tit they can buy with the income they make off pushing tit on us. And don’t get me wrong I love shallow Instagrammable tit too, but I’m not sharing top tips on taking a mortgage holiday or getting an extension by re mortgaging the 20% LTV mortgage your parents gifted you! Ridiculous

Lol RAHS though you’re so right 😂

Based on your posts I wouldn't be surprised if we're exactly the same age and possibly went to the same uni! You definitely seem to have your tit more together than me though!

Anyway I'll stop fangirling over HTRIA and say...I'm really tired of Alex and her ilk. At least give me some decent content rather than these constant spoilt rich kid whinges!

Oxbridge rejects uni? 👀 not that it sounds like any of us would have applied to Oxbridge as they don’t let the peasants have jobs and study there ergo a no go!

And don’t be silly re fan girling loool x

ETA - I feel bad ive really truly ripped into her the last few pages, I genuinely enjoy(ed) her styling content, the home stuff less, and it’s fine to be an unashamed posho and do that stuff because it’s almost tradition at this point. The bee in my bonnet is over the financial advice / whinging, it’s unbearable !

Well this is awkward but it was Oxford I went to 🔺🔺🔺Had a tit time socially because it was full of Alexes and they thought I was a 'chav' because I went to a comprehensive and had a Midlands accent. Urgh those girls still give me nightmares!

Omg my love! I can’t imagine how difficult going to actual Oxford would have been both academically (and go you 🔥🔥🔥!) and socially. Were they still rahs there and what were they like?! Imagine an even higher concentration of private school girls, undiluted by the grammar school ones? Idk why I assume them to be too old school posh & smart to be like AS post uni, are they still bad?!

There should be a thread on rahs life stories tbh I’d be fascinated to know ✨where they are now✨

Bloody hell, “rahs” 😂 I’m 36 and not heard that word for a while. They were the kind of girls that wore jack wills and flip flops and had their long hair clipped back in a pouffe at the front.

@Dustye I am sorry that things are tough, but so glad to hear that my posts have helped. I’m 45 now, kids are 11 and 9. I’ve always had full on jobs (nursing) but in that last 3 years I’ve had the space to really focus on my career and now am in a sub board role.
Don’t get me wrong, we still have to plan massively with money, but we do have holidays and there is enough for some meals out etc. I think that the shift is not only the money you have but the headspace that allows for some good career decisions.
Good luck - and happy if you want to DM, I feel really strongly about this subject helping women who are where I have been.

Ffs caring about whether your hand wash come out of a swanky soap container is not on the radar when trying to budget. So painfully out of touch.

Yes! I left uni in 2007 and my halls of residence were full of rahs. Despite my university being high percentage of privately educated people I still managed to leave virtually entirely with friends from state schools. Which is all very well but would loved at least one of them to have had a second home we could have gone on holiday to!

Love the direction this thread has taken.

It’s nice to hear insight from genuinely successful people who haven’t had a leg up from parents and can also, despite achieving success, see through the middle class insta bullshit.
