You said you’d want to rip them apart with your bare hands- yet people whose children are murdered don’t do this. I just wonder why it doesn’t happen in reality, when so many people *think* they’d definitely do it.
You very obviously don’t have children. So there’s no way you can ever comprehend what those of us who do have children feel about this subject.

I do have children. And I think more people think like me than you. Some of them are on this thread.

so nice try at “you don’t have kids you wouldn’t understand”

tbh Betty, I can’t handle your level of debate, it’s like talking to a 16 year old. I’m just going to ignore your posts going forward.

Wanting to and being able to are two different things. If the law takes that decision out of your hands, then if you feel so strongly about it then why wouldn’t you be happy that it’s being done? Some crimes are just so unforgivable, and many criminals unrepentant.

I did say in extreme cases. I’m not talking about your average Joe burglar or rapist. Serial crimes, for example. Where the killer has shown no remorse and would kill again.

there’s also people on this thread who agree with what I’m saying...! What’s your point?

For me the thing is the criminal justice system is a reflection of our society. You can’t have Russia style prisons and death penalty in a liberal, caring, supportive country like the U.K.

When you get Russian justice, you get Russian society, which is more brutal- including to law abiding citizens- then we can imagine or know about. You don’t get to pick and choose.

In some countries prisons are tough but some of them have a great life.
Phones, Playstations and all sorts.]

If someone like said above murders a baby, they do not deserve to live on this planet at all!
Yet who is paying to keep these rum bags in prison?

You don't speak for everyone, you need to realise that.

You have your views and other people have different views. It has nothing to do with not having children or other people never understanding what it feels like to have children, you have no idea about other people's lives.

This is not a children or no children argument.

All people with children do not support the death penalty, just as all people who don't support it are not childless. It really isn't as simple as you are making out.

Yes countries with brutal prisons are usually corrupt so if you have money you will still have a good life there

Liberal and caring? That’s all good and well but no wonder so many people in this nation don’t have faith in their justice system.

It’s a debate, not everyone is going to agree. Would be boring otherwise.

A death penalty system is actually more expensive than a life in prison. It isn't a cost saver for the tax payer.

I think you need to direct that at the poster I was quoting- she was the one saying I can’t have children because I don’t support child rapists getting the death penalty. I haven’t mentioned children.
Opinions are like holes, everyone’s got one.

There's plenty of people who have children who do not support the death penalty. Bit of a ridiculous generalisation to make. Just because YOU feel that way, it doesn't mean every one does. It also doesn't mean those who don't think the same as you are wrong. Everyone is entitled to their opinion - whether they have children or not.

The point is you want them to be liberal and caring when you lose your job and need universal credit to feed your family. You want them to be liberal and caring to give disabled people life long expensive medical treatment. You want them to be liberal and caring when your baby is premature and needs an incubator.

You don’t get this in brutal countries. You pay for it yourself and if you’re poor you die.

Our criminal justice system is a reflection of the former. If you want the latter, you’ve got to take the rest.Let’s throw in a dictator whilst we’re at it. What a great place to live!

No, they should always be liberal and caring in those instances. Its not an abhorrent crime to lose one’s job or to be born disabled. It’s not about want. An unrepentant serial murderer, in my opinion, is beyond that. I personally don’t think they deserve to have human rights once they’ve wilfully taken away the lives of others for their own sick pleasure. That is my belief and I stand by it for now. Might not be the most popular one, but that’s life. Not everyone will agree and you can’t make people think the same.

Now I’m jumping out of the frying pan, because this be gettin’ heated and I haven’t had my coffee yet. 😝

But those brutal countries are not liberal, whether they should be or not. The 2 themes- liberal and caring but brutal and murderous- do not go together.

I would prefer my tax goes to this than keeping people on this planet who don't deserve it
Your tax money will go towards death row inmates sitting for 30 years waiting for their execution while they appeal. You cannot have the most extreme form of punishment without a sturdy appeals process too. And for people who say it should only be handed out when their is certainty around the crime therefore its ok to sentence quickly? Quite difficult nowadays. The things that can be used as part of a defence in court or as part of an appeal range far and wide - mishandling of evidence, ineffective counsel, chain of custody. If any of the minute number of things that need to happen to say, convict for murder, go wrong - that is support for the defence.

No. I know sometimes if a murder happens it is in self defense, accidents, gang related and so on. That doesn't bother me so much - they're serving their time for the crimes and it isn't always as simple as 'murder'.

I mean for the likes of people who kill babies, children, killed in domestic abuse and so on. Once found guilty and there is plenty of evidence then they should be gone within the month.

Like I say, Lee Rigby's killers are alive. One is on life support I believe due to COVID, but they killed that poor man. In daylight. On a busy road.
On video. The beheaded him in front of the public. Why should they live? They shouldn't

I wasn’t suggesting that the current places that operate the death penalty have it completely right. As I’ve already said, I don’t agree with prisoners being kept on death row for 30+ years going through various appeals at the tax payers expense. That type of system in itself is flawed. But I am saying that for particular crimes the only punishment that fits the crime is death.

I don’t think it’s ever going to come back into play in the UK. I just think that the current prison system is too much of an easy ride. If someone is given a life sentence for example that should mean they are incarcerated until the day they die. And it should be in a concrete cell, alone, no access to any type of luxury.

I agree with Amnesty International on this one:
“The death penalty is a symptom of a culture of violence, not a solution to it.”
I could never support the death penalty, it goes against our basic human rights to life. We can’t deprive people of their human rights, no matter how abhorrent their crimes, if we do we’re no better than they are.
You have to remove the emotional element, if someone hurt my son of course my first instinct would be to hurt them back, but that’s not how the law works and for very good reason.
