I don't quite know when it became a "society of grifters", but YouTube and Patreon have segued so many into this lifestyle. Don't even get me started on "Influencers"- too many people thought this was a valid career path vice actually learning a skill or using a degree for something tangible, hard work, making a career, yet instead- "I'll be an internet sensation!" Fanny is a child-woman- she's never worked a real job in her life (which is really sad, as she is near 50), and has zero life skills. There are many people like Fanny, unfortunately- we've had the issue in FL where during the pandemic, people did not want to work as unemployment paid better (and they could get free food from the food bank), and those of us who had jobs/pensions we earned had to foot the bill in our taxes for the grifters. Once the dole benefits ran their course, they did not want to go back to work, as they felt their skills were "undervalued" (because their previous career of burger flipping made them incredibly valuable members of society- did they use the money and time off to get a degree in anything? No, but they're the first to tell you about the latest TikTok videos from their newest iPhone while they are still living with their parents... SMH.) Sadly, our food banks are now stretched thin, as "those who don't" feel entitled to it, those who can donate (like myself) find themselves being a lot more conservative as our own budgets are tightened (and let's be honest, many are jaded by the freeloaders), and those who actually NEED it can't always get the help they truly need. It is really a sad state.
