How did they get your number?Was out today and hit a little bollard in the car. No damage done thankfully. But received a call this evening to say that I also hit a car. I did stop and take a look around me after I’d hit the bollard and didn’t see any damage done to the car next to it. But they’re claiming it’s on cctv footage and I’ve damaged their back bumper which is a bit strange seeing as I was literally parked next to their car and drove out of the space. Their car was facing the same way. No damage done to my car but this particular person is claiming that my paint is on their car but there’s not even as much as a scrape on mine?? Asked for photos and they won’t send! What do I do

Ignore them. I had somebody leave a note on my car saying I bumped into theirs. Why would I park next to a car that I just bumped? Anyway I ignored it. Bonus was I had a dash cam at the time that also proved I didn’t touch their car. Although my insurers told me it’s not necessary as the other person had to prove I did it.
But be careful if this is a place you park regularly as in my case it was by my gym and my car kept being scratched. Clearly the person who accused me. The police advised me to stop parking there as we couldn’t catch the person
Apparently the police gave them my number? The police rang me afterwards to tell me that there was a witness on the scene and claimed it was a hit and run which wasn’t the case. I told them that I went into the bollard and the man that had rang me previously had told me there was cctv footage of me going into their car and if that was the case they’d see me getting out and checking the car beside the bollard to make sure I didn’t hit it as well and didnt see any damage so I did drive off, but they’re now claiming that the back bumper and paintwork has been taken off. I also asked the policewoman what damage had been done and she wasn’t able to tell me which I found strange and asked about the cctv footage and she said she’d have to get back to me on it. I did ask the man on the phone too to send over photos. He told me he didn’t have a smart phone but his wife did and she would send them over but haven’t received anything at all
I’m gonna get onto my insurance in the morningand leave it in their hands. They’ll obviously have to provide evidence that it was me!
FYI I would put in a complaint with the police for giving out your telephone number.
They are absolutely not allowed to do that. That is a breach of GDPR and they should know better. What if this person was a stalker?!?!
This is exactly what my friend said actually!! I didn’t think much of it but it definitely is strange. She actually rang the number that the police rang me off afterwards to make sure it was them because she thought it was all so strange!! Turns out it actually was Legit a police officer but defo so so weird and should have more sense.
I just find it so odd that there is literally no damage done to my car, not as much as a scrape, the bollard was rubber. How has my paintwork ended up on their car when there is absolutely no sign of anything done to my car

This seems very strange, one the police cannot give out your number. How did they even get it? And why are they so interested it such a minor incident?

There’s something fishy going on I think. You need to find out who gave them your number (highly unlikely it was police) I think someone’s having you on here! Don’t pay anything
I also think this! I don't think the police would be making phone calls to an individual for a minor bump on private(?) land. At best the person who thought they'd been hit would get a crime reference number after dialling 101. How would the police have your number anyway? I'd have thought that a more serious "crime" would have to be investigated for them to get hold of it.
I think because they’re saying it was “hit and run”. Which it wasn’t really. I’m not sure how the police had my number but I assume it was due to they had a number plate and got it through the insurance company?? The police officer did tell me on the phone that she had passed my details on to the other party so I do believe she has done that. I did get a crime ref number as well which I rang back later on to double check it was a legit officer because I did begin to doubt as well
Going back 10 years so pre GDPR. A lady reversed in to me at a retail park and drove off. I was sat stationary in the car so scribbled down her plate and went to to police station. They found her number (insurance details I assume) and contacted her to pass on my details in the hope of creating some dialogue. They at no point gave me her number and I asked them to share mine. I think you could definitely complain about the station passing on your data without consent.
Course of action depends about how stressful you want to make it for yourself. My instinct is their car was already damaged and they're looking for a free fix. You could say you too have dash cam footage and then I think it may just fizzle out pretty quickly. Or just leave it in the hands of your insurer and not engage. If you're confident you didn't make contact with their car though make this perfectly clear to your insurer, hope you're ok.
Also if you are certain you didn’t do anything, I would look a pursuing this person for harassment along with the complaint with the police. What they have done is unacceptable and breaches all of GDPR.

I can imagine, people really are. Let us know how you get on, if he starts again. Tell him to go through his insurance and block him. Don’t let him get to you.
yeah I rang the insurance company this morning and am just gonna let them deal with it. I’d rather have it on record than pay the money directly to the garage incase he does try to take me for a ride if it does turn out I’ve hit him. To be honest, I’m just worried about getting points for this so called “hit and run” which wasn’t the case.
The police shouldn’t be giving out your details. Definite complaint right there. Not sure why they’re all so invested. They usually don’t bother with small things like this at all. They don’t even go out to actual car crashes sometimes so not sure why this effort.
