I had no idea there was a 1975 thread!! They are my favourite band ever, I grew up near them (my friend used to go to the same karate class as Matty in primary school lol) so they have always been very popular around here, even in the early days. My cat is even named after Matty and I've met the man himself out and about when I lived in London and he was very lovely and patient. Can't stand the negative attention he's getting at the mo, I hope he's okay. It doesn't seem to be hurting the band's reputation though - they have more listeners on Spotify than ever! 
I've seen them all over Manchester (anyone from Manchester here that remember the Deaf Institute and Academy 1 days?), in London and in New York. Was even lucky enough to get tickets to their tiny War Child gig this Feb but my biggest regret of my life is being too drunk to remember it...

Can someone explain what exactly the controversy around Matty was? I don't follow them closely or anything, but I like their music. I just saw stuff on social media about him being a racist etc.
I'm not 100% sure, I've just seen bits on tiktok
There was something about him encouraging/mocking japanese accents.
There was also something about him watching some kind of porn. (added the bit from the article for that)

Article says about when he made a comment of something like "I don't think it's racist to say..." and then the band cut him off.
And people said they don't know what he was going to say but usually something racist followers that type of comment.
But to me, that was a staged thing. I don't think he had anything to say at all. I've seen the video a few times.
Also says about him doing a nazi salute on stage and something to do with Donald trump.
