This was how I finally shifted the pounds after 15 years of food obsession and yo-yo dieting. I suffered secretly with Bulimia and binge eating for YEARS since childhood. Name a plan and I’d done it - largely in recent years driven by instahuns. I stopped following any plan and just ate exactly why I fancied, when I wanted it but always asked myself whether it tasted as good as I thought it was/ was worth the calories, if I was actually hungry etc often high calorie food doesn’t taste that great after a while and I would stop eating stuff after a few bites whereas before I would have finished it through obligation. I feel free for the first time in my life and despite having two children under 4 currently and working full time in a demanding role am at my healthiest in terms of my body image and weight. So cutting out dairy only since Monday has been interesting, the sore throat and headaches I've been plagued with have disappeared. It could just be coincidental but tbh it has made me think I was going through a lot of dairy every day doing Slimming world with the 2 x healthy extra As plus having a lot of yoghurt/cottage cheese etc. It has left me wondering if I should carry on as a member or not, being pescatarian cuts out a lot of SW 'Free' food anyway but not having dairy just makes it more difficult as I keep finding recipes but then they'll all involve quark, yoghurt, fromage frais etc. I like the accountability but I just think I'll find it really hard to follow properly!
Yesterday I was really busy with work and didn't have time to think about SW at all - I added up the calories of what I had at the end of the day and it worked out about 1500 - was weird though it would have all been pretty high syn but I didn't think about food at all yesterday except when I was hungry. SW I think about food constantly, planning every single day's food and having stuff for the sake of it just to use up syns. Hmm![]()

I would implore anyone reading this to step away from whatever ‘plan’ you are following and have faith that you can go it alone - I was a classic person who loved the structure of a plan and loved the ‘starting afresh feeling’ however always fell into the same traps, got hungry, gave into temptation, thought ‘Chuck today in the duck it bucket’ and start again tomorrow. This gets draining.
Believe in yourself and go it alone - begin to love food again and take back control of your life rather than it being dictated by ‘Margaret’ the group leader who has her own ducked up view of food. Reliance on a marketised plan can’t continue for the rest of your life, you are just being played by the advertising.
Sorry.... bit passionate on this topic![]()
Honestly, just do it.This is how I want to beI have been on some form of plan/calorie counting for years now. Losing and gaining the same 15lb. I haven't been feeling great and been doing just that having what I fancied, because there was only certain stuff I could eat without it stinging my throat anyway, and my weight has stayed the same this last week, I have left stuff if I've been full whereas like you say you feel like you have to finish it because of the syn value of the portion or whatever. This is the saddest thing but what has been most liberating has been just pouring milk straight from the carton into my coffee like a normal person without measuring it out to the ml

Thank you, I'll look up that book, I was thinking of finding some anti diet literature! I like the general concept of SW with the focus on eating mainly lean protein and veg, but it has a lot of flaws. I've only been back at work two weeks and was finding fitting everything in a nightmare. It's fine when you're preparing every meal at home but I work away a lot and I'm in the car all day too so it's really tricky. I had a meal deal on Tuesday and was like woah nowHonestly, just do it.
Eyeroll alertI have to say I am a huge fan of the ‘have your cake and your skinny jeans too’ book which was just another bandwagon jump for so many slimming worlders a couple of years ago. Reading that book was the turning point for me; for it to sink in and actually affect your behaviour though you have to be already actively questioning the plans; which you are. Honestly I think you would be successful (and I guarantee happier).
I think I started by just weighing in once a week; dropping the plan idea all together, menu planning for the next week thinking about my favourite meals and then just ate until I was satisfied. It’s so simple but the empowerment you get from eating what you want for a week and loosing weight (because if weight loss is a serious goal you won’t go mad!) that you will want to stick with it.
For me, ditching the plans has made me realise how disordered they were, I dropped pounds fast (for good) doing this and I cannot stress enough how it should be everyone’s ultimate goal - people cannot continue to pay slimming world et al every week until they keel over. It’s an entirely unnecessary and fabricated industry which only survives because people buy into it. I think a lot of people seem to be more critical and recognising it for what it is. Just question why skimming world haven’t shut down or warned off any of these accounts promoting the flawed ‘Instagram’ version of the plan - despite the fact that it’s disordered and downright unhealthy, they are a business and businesses are about profit not health![]()
It’s always a temptation when you feel like you are loosing control to go back to a ‘plan’ but like you said: recognise the parts of the plan which are actually good nutritional advice and forget all the other silly rules that go alongside it (the way they turn it into a product to sell) it’s the idea it breeds of bein ‘on vs off’ plan which is dangerous, especially to those of us with a certain psychologyThank you, I'll look up that book, I was thinking of finding some anti diet literature! Honestly, read the book, it’s great!
Let us know what you think!I've just ordered it!
When no food is ‘off plan’ and you recognise that you have the freedom to eat what you want..... funnily enough it’s not all that attractive anymore to eat an excessive amount of junk food! It’s about being sensible and using common sense as well. We live in a society where food is plentyful. I just had a bubble tea (my absolute fave and the kind of thing that on slimming world would blow and entire day because I didn’t know the nutritional info) however I have enough common sense knowledge to know that it’s probably about 500 calories and I shouldn’t have it everyday - if I do treat myself to one then if I listen to my hunger cues I will naturally have a lighter lunch and dinner. The high street/ Deliveroo etc make it easy to indulge in nutritionally devoid, yet high calorie things which become a habit and end up at the point people are having several large meals a day and frappachinos, huge desserts, etc on top. This is just not healthy but it’s become weaved into our culture. I read an article once that said just by getting into the habit of ordering a latte and a muffin into your commute you would be adding about 600 calories a day - over time this adds up and will result in weight gain - yet it’s so easy to do because the marketing and temptation is all around us
The other thing I found is exactly what someone else said above... I would be craving something (because all my food was dictated by a plan rather than what my body was really craving.) Inevitably I would use all my syns on having a ‘treat’ often quite mundane and tit going by the plan - eat it reialise it hadn’t hit the spot and binge. If I hadn’t ‘banned’ certain foods then I may have had a donut, or a pitta and humous, or some chocolate, but just had a bit and been satisfied and finished - instead the on plan off plan mentality makes it seem logical to have a period of plan (binge) which you make the most of with a constant arbitrary date that you will ‘get back on it’ before falling off again and repeating the same cycle again and again.
Even with a psychology degree and deep understanding of human behaviour it’s taken me a long time to challenge my own thinking and free myself from ‘the plan!’
Let us know what you think!
I was just saying to my boyfriend the other day how bad it is you can even get McDonald’s etc on Deliveroo etc, and not only that, and as if that wasn’t bad enough I heard they are doing finance on Just Eat accounts now?! I personally would never dream of getting McDonald’s delivered - for me it’s got to be eaten fresh, in the carIt’s about being sensible and using common sense as well. 100% plus when I was on diets, if I had a McDonalds I would (I’m ashamed to say) go large, probably have a shake or calorie laden drink with it, have mozarella dippers or something on the side and then maybe a McFlurry or something to finish. That’s bleeping obscene! I would feel like tit afterwards and vow to get back on it, only to duck up again. Constant heartburn and a big hole in my bank balance.I was just saying to my boyfriend the other day how bad it is you can even get McDonald’s etc on Deliveroo etc, and not only that, and as if that wasn’t bad enough I heard they are doing finance on Just Eat accounts now?! I personally would never dream of getting McDonald’s delivered - for me it’s got to be eaten fresh, in the carbut it’s scary thinking it’s just at the touch of a button now. From where I used to live you could be there, through the drive thru and back in 10 mins and that was far too convenient.
I agree I sometimes have loads of other stuff trying to satisfy a sweet craving ie yoghurts, fruit, cereal bars, when I should have just had what I wanted in a small amount in the first place and that would have nipped it in the bud. Crazy how on slimming world sometimes an entire 500g tub of yoghurt will be 2 syns and a little chocolate pudding thing of about 180 calories will blow most of your allowance for the day!
How much does someone have to eat to gain that in a week?! My biggest weekly gain has been 4lb and that's when I was pregnant and carrying an almost 10lb babyOk, Now I'm Struggling....
