If you look back 50 years ago people were so much slimmer without being on any form of diet/plan and it's simply because everyone was so much more active, owning a car was far less common for a start, I am so lazy sometimes if it's raining or something I drive to the shop which is a 5 minute walk 😩 everyone ate full large everything and there was no such thing as fry light. I was in the supermarket the other day thinking it's actually an achievement in itself not to be overweight when you can get a 5 pack of doughnuts for £1 but a box of melon is £2.50!
THIS!! ❤❤

large is a feminist issue is a really good book.
I find people who are effortlessly thin just eat to hunger cues, if one day they have a big appetite they roll with it. Next day hardly any food. It all balances out. When they eat they enjoy it sans guilt. They might have a big meal three times a week, not everyday every meal.

That’s a load of balls, sorry but someone needed to say it.

Since 2014 I’ve bounced in and out of Slimming World. In the past I’ve tried Cambridge (just milkshakes and misery) and most recently tried Team RH.
I appreciate Richie from Team RH. His approach is great. However, he can rant at me to weigh everything to the gram until he’s blue in the face but when I’m stood at the kitchen counter at 7a.m weighing coffee granules, I really start to question if it’s all worth it. My answer was no. Calorie counting is not for me. Neither is weighing myself every day even though I understand why he asks you to do it. I have the type of personality that is prone to becoming quite obsessive about things and I could see that this wasn’t cutting it for my mental health. Sitting at my mother-in-law’s dinner table on Easter Sunday, having palpitations because I can’t accurately weigh carrots and roast potatoes to the gram... 🙄 I realise that this is just me and not their plan, but I also realise that I cannot be the only person who is likely to become obsessed and have it take over their life.
He will bash SW for calling certain foods ‘syns’ whilst simultaneously calling certain foods ‘rit’...🤷🏻‍♀️
Every plan has it’s flaws, I guess.
I’ve returned to SW. I’ve sacked off my old IG that followed all the accounts promoting chocolate laden porridge. I’m going to read the books and follow the plan that they have written. The podcast is a good shout. The qualified nutritionists that have been featured on the show have cleared up a few things about SW that I was never too happy about. I agree that it still has it’s flaws, but ultimately, as someone stated above, it’s about using your common sense and understanding that the accountability starts and ends with you. Stacking a mound of SW chips on a plate with a WW wrap
pizza and having the three measly pieces of mushroom on your pizza count as your 1/3 of a plate isn’t going to get you anywhere. It’s fine once every so often but if you’re looking to shift some weight that’s just not going to do the trick. I agree with all of you about the instahuns and their warped versions of Slimming World. It doesn’t do SW any favours not addressing it all.
Anyway, having been through the thread, if anyone has any further worthwhile Instagram suggestions of genuine Slimming World accounts I would love to have a look. Even if your suggestion is yourself just write a little list of ones you like and include yourself in it. Nobody will ever know. 👍🏻

All diets are calories in vs calories out tho? You can call it super diet 5000 if you like, but that’s essentially what it is 🤷🏻‍♂️

Does anyone remember a slimming world account, the girl was called Emma something? I followed her, can't remember if it was Facebook or Instagram but she seemed to go through a tough time and then disappeared. Was proSW and then ANTIS. I often wonder how she is.

Which was the ‘SW’ account, a blonde girl, I think she was called Emma possibly as well where she used to hoard tit loads of chocolate bars and sweets under her bed 😂 and went to Nando’s nearly every day, she was obsessed with Disney too IIRC

I’ve followed SW on and off most of my adult life but since 2017 something clicked.
I’m no longer chasing numbers but hit a target I’m happily maintaining along with exercise, I’m no saint and do slip up but don’t let it guilt me.
I could still loose 2 stone in other peoples eyes but why, I’m happy and wearing size 14s I only dreamed off, plus no spring chicken lol.
I just don’t like group etc or how these big SW accounts exploit the plan.
I’m a meat and 2 veg girl lol.

I too did SW. Lost 2.5 stone then it slowly crept back on. Last October I discovered Biceps and Banter coaching through JojoBicepsBanter (check out her video about slimming world). They focus on sustainable weight loss and keeping it off. I have never felt better and feel like slowly but surely my issues with food are on the mend, something SW only made worse.

having stuff for the sake of it just to use up syns. Hmm 😂
I don’t understand why anyone does this and yet I see people say it all the time. Nowhere does it say you have to eat your syns.

I do laugh at the people who call SW a cult and rave about this guy. The replies to his posts would put Jim Jones to shame. 😂

Not all your syn allowance no but I have literally been told by a consultant to have at least 5 syns a day, I know it’s nonsense but it does get etched into your mind that you must/should use them.

You’re absolutely right, they do encourage you to use them but only where necessary. If a consultant has told you that you HAVE to use them then they are not doing their job properly.
Syns are just Slimming World’s own way of promoting the 80/20 balance. The hope is that by using the syns, you’ll be less likely to feel deprived and go on a massive calorie bender.
I don’t think you should have them for the sake of it and any consultant with an ounce of common sense will say that syns are there to be used IF you need to.

Someone mentioned above that fundamentally all diets are cals in/cals out, call it what you want. I don’t dispute that. The approaches are very different though. I add vegetables to my plate without a thought when I follow Slimming World. I remain aware of trying not to overdo it. When I was doing CC I was weighing peas and having meltdowns when I couldn’t because I had to weigh to the gram. Even pre-packaged things because those things can be as much as 20cals more or less either way. Weighing a banana, eating it, then weighing the skin to find out how many grams/calories I’d eaten is not a life I want to live. You’ve got people weighing eggs and reverse weighing yogurts. For me that’s not a healthy place to be in. How long before they’re refusing all food that they haven’t weighed?
I did it for six weeks and I was there already. Like I said earlier, this is just me and my experience but the truth is that I can’t be the only one.

Edit: I also found the 80/20 rule a lot harder with CC. Those of us trying to lose weight are in this situation because we have repeatedly made unwise food choices.
A sceanario: It’s 10pm, you have 250 cals left over that you have to use, you’ve had your 20% junk for the day already, are you really going to use that on some chicken or a massive bowl of fruit? Course not.
(Team RH insists upon using all your cals. If you’re less or more than 20cals either way, no gold medal for you! You need gold medals for 14 days in a row to progress and have cals lowered.)

I'm finding calorie counting more liberating than Slimming World and Weight Watchers. I wouldn't join RH, Munro or Courtney whatsherface

Totally agree with you. I find there's a lot less guilt with calorie counting. You can eat pretty much whatever you like as long as you plan for it. I know SW says you can do this on their plan, but its a lot of rubbish. It's 24 syns for a Mcdonald's meal thats 696 calories, but you can eat a gigantic 800 calorie brekky for less than 5 syns🙄 I get that it's trying to steer you to "healthier" choices, but in my opinion it just demonises food.

I'll never understand why people pay TeamRH to work out their TDEE for them and to be shouted at for not doing 15k steps. I've never been a member, but from what I understand you log using MFP which is free🤷‍♂️

My fitness pal is spot on or nutracheck, you've got to pay for that but its cheaper than SW and WW

Theres a balance between SW and Team RH. Both imo are problematic. The premise of CC is good but if Team RH are forcing people to eat calories they dont want that seems ridiculous.

If youre not weighing stuff thats easy to over eat like pasta / rice then you cannot possibly know how many calories youre eating a day. Thats why with SW people are following the plan to the letter and not losing weight and rather than ever addressing portion size its 'eat more speed' is the advice given.

Ive never tracked side salads / greens. Having some lettuce, onion, tomato and cucumber, the calories are so minimal.

From being at a SW group for a long period of time, being on the social team and observing it was only ever successful for people with a lot of weight to lose.

People coming in with a stone to lose really struggled to lose any weight and I think it was all portion control related. These werent people who had been eating huge amounts to start with either. Y'know?
