I thought the same, I feel so sad for her and her kids, but how could her husband give informed consent. I'd hate people to see me like that, especially if I wasn't yet well.
I feel every sympathy for her, but would never want my husband's photo all over the news if he was ill like that. I'd want people to remember the lively, happy version of him. I feel like for an entire year we've had story after story with increasingly awful details and it can't be nice for the family to see. Even if it was an update every month, fine, but it has literally been daily.

Why on earth do celebs feel it neccessary to reveal the most deeply personal things? Today I learned that Paloma Faith and her baby both have thrush.

FFS it really is okay to keep some stuff to yourself.

I'm on chemo at the moment, it's like tablet form but you get so knackered and I sleep loads well staying awake can be a problem some days . But the more extreme chemo every one I know has had to shave their hair .
All the best with your treatment

I don't think I woild feel happy allowing my partner to take full control and not having any input at all regarding money. She must surely have some money of her own in a bank account?

I mean, good for them that they live a private life, but why wouldn’t they? What’s the alternative? Apart from his awful illness bringing Derek into the spotlight, it’s not like the press would have been doorstepping them over the years about their son being married to a minor breakfast tv presenter.

What does everyone think about Kate Garraway’s documentary, I think it’s on tonight? I think it’s been so sad seeing the headlines about her husband but I’m not sure how I feel about this documentary
Disgusting exploitation of her husband in his most vulnerable position. Sickening lack of respect for his privacy.
There are other ways to pay the bills.
She might be a strong woman in a tremendously upsetting situation, but this is a new low, getting publicity via your husbands sick bed.
FFS.

Maybe she has no choice? She has 2 kids to think about and provide for long term financially. Perhaps she knows that Derek would be happy to sacrifice his privacy if it means providing some income, security and a roof over their heads for his young children.
I know I would be.

Sorry to be pedantic but she’s got 2 kids.
I like Kate and I’ve recorded the doc so I haven’t seen it yet. It’s a difficult one as she’s never struck me as publicity-seeking before. Maybe because ITV are one of her employers she almost felt obliged? Or maybe it was a financial decision because she would’ve had to take a lot of time off over the last year...idk, but between this and her book, the book idea seems less like a good idea to me for some reason.
I hope there’s a breakthrough and he recovers.

She's spoken that she will probably have to give up work to be Derek's carer so any savings they have won't last long. Not seen the documentary yet. Will watch later.

I really like Kate Garraway. I think she is one of the genuine ones. She doesn’t strike me as the publicity seeking type . I think her only motivation for doing this documentary was to educate people about long covid or anyone living with someone who has a life altering condition .
Yes there were some Intensely private moments documented but that is her reality and others . I’m sure she discussed it with both her family and his before doing the documentary. Just because they are private and dont go on social media , it doesn’t mean they didn’t agree to it .
I found it refreshing that she comes across as quite scatty and untidy . She didn’t live in a overtly showbiz house. It was normal , toysand Piles of stuff everywhere .... and that was before she had to totally adapt the house. Some good points were raised .

Thank you! So weird, I thought I remembered reading an article about her having 4 kids and people judging her? Must’ve been someone else. Teach me for half reading shite, out of date, mags at the dentist.

Yeah I agree. He was in the media too I think, so he knows how it goes. He has the most severe case of long covid in the uk I think too, so his case would have been of public interest anyway I think, even without him. I would hate to be seen like that on telly, but if it was a choice between being seen like that and my family getting some cash to care for me, and raising awareness of Long Covid in the process, then I'd like to think I'd be ok with it. Same with his family. She will have the bulk of the costs and care. They may be his parents but he has a family of his own that she is responsible for.

Yes it’s weird isn’t it? I’ve read all sorts of un-palatable stuff by over-sharing slebs, . If you did the same on the bus to strangers peeps would think you mentally ill.

All the best Noseyparker. Hope you’re feeling as well as can be.

We didn't see it in the documentary but she may have told him about the documentary and he may have communicated his blessing. He was in the politics game once so he'd be aware of human interest stories and the public image that his wife maintains.
The most positive outcome of the docu is hopefully that people can see the reality of long covid. There were others with it featured, like the nurse and the guy who recovered while his brother is in Derek's situation. It's a reality for many people now and I hope people who are in denial about covid or downplay it watch the programme, it'll be worth it to change their minds if nothing else.
@Beverly Macker, were you thinking of Ulrika? She's always getting called out for - the audacity - having her 4 kids with 4 different dads.

I was thinking similar to you they probably waited to get his consent before they actually start producing the documentary but obviously began recording from the start with a documentary in mind. It is terrible for the man to be seen at his worse but I agree it will open peoples eyes to the realities of this virus on survivors.

A quick Google shows he’s had his fair share of controversy in the past.

I’m assuming he’s given consent to the documentary. They couldn’t air it without it, could they?

I haven’t watched it but people I know who did seemed to think Kate came across as genuine but news articles are saying she has said he doesn’t need her, he needs specialist care so she won’t be his primary caregiver/ giving up work. Maybe she’ll get Piers’ slot!

I see Stacy Solomon has been showing off her new house on social media. I happen to have been in the house a few times in the past, as I knew the couple who lived there for years. It is actually a lovely house inside and the grounds are scenic. It had to be sold because one half of the couple died last year. He was a lovely man, a businessman. He built up a chain of well-known estate agents and hotels, although the hotel side of his business was taken over years ago. I was always welcomed into their home.

I think Stacey and Joe will love living there because it is also on the edge of a huge country park near Brentwood. A very peaceful place.

I truly feel for Kate Garraway and what she's going through with her husband being so ill for so long with Covid but I am absolutely dumbfounded at how Mail Online has spent months pubishing her every single move, her every though

It's as though she's the only person in the world. I've never seen one person get this much coverage ever.

I can understand her doing the documentary and writing a book....it's probably therapy for her and I can see how stuff like this may help others who are caring for ill loved ones.

The Mail coverage is just utterly bizzare in my opinion though, and I feel it is far too much. I don't get how she can want/need that level of attention but she does appear to be courting it and it's been decided that anyone who says it's a bit much or uncomfortable or anything like that is now a "cruel troll" apparently.

I know the Mail are in bed with ITV but it's madness.

I haven’t warched it, I didn’t want to, but I’ve seen enough written about it on the DM sidebar of shame to be pretty horrified. Of course he couldn’t consent to being filmed. It’s so exploitative.

It just comes across as misery porn to me, and I wouldn’t expect any less from ITV.

I don’t buy it that they did it because they were desperate for money, or that the family were in financial dire straights. Surely Kate earns a good salary (or is she technically a freelancer)? I can’t believe the family would have been living hand to mouth, paycheck to paycheck, pre-Covid. Surely ITV wouldn’t have put her on paid compassionate leave?

I think Katie Prices documentary about Harvey proves it doesn’t matter whether a vulnerable person can consent to being in this kind of film.
