He was determined to keep it quiet - only very few friends and his band out of necessity knew outside the family and he had good people around him so it never leaked either. I can totally understand why a cancer patient with a terminal diagnosis may choose to end their own life. The reality of dying from cancer is very hard and ugly, and many patients are drugged to the point of being insensible to cope with it, and pass not as themselves. Maybe he did take the option to do it his way? Maybe it was just a coincidence? I don't think we'll ever know.

In fact I've done a very similar thing myself so my comment was short sighted.Sadly, they can do. A niece of my husband was abused by several older men - with the collusion of her parents. When these things later went to court, she couldn't view one of them as being abuse, because he'd give her £20 afterwards. She's a very warped young lady as a result - I don't mean unpleasant, but it did a lot of damage mentally to the point where what she views as right and wrong are very blurred

Then he knew for a good few months that it was terminal, but he still finished the album and had a musical debut on broadway in December of that year - the opening night was the last time he was seen in public, and he came onstage for the curtain call and still people didn’t know he was sick.
There are photos from that night, and then ones allegedly taken in January though I don’t think it’s ever been fully confirmed. That’s when they were published which I think is the confusion... If they were taken then it’s pretty extraordinary considering he died 11 days into the month.
