A close family member used to be a drag act back in the 60s. He’s gay and back then, drag in the gay community was about giving a big duck You to homophobia.
And if you look at the drag of the 80s like with Les Dawson or Barry Humphries - those were sort of love letters to women in a way, not sexualised, just strong and funny characters with depth.
It all went wrong around Lily Savage/early Ru Paul, when it started to evolve into something more cruel and derogatory. There’s something hateful about drag now and the way it caricatures and objectifies women.
Like I said; old drag used to punch up, today it punches down on women.

I have seen some excellent drag acts in the past done by talented and witty men with great voices. I’ve also seen lazy half-baked ones with misogynistic drag names who seem to think the whole thing is about dressing up rather than performing. Over the years I’ve come to feel more resentful about the caricature of ‘women’ that the current drag craze seems to be.
Drag Race is the problem.

I used to watch Drag Race and find it really entertaining. There was an undercurrent of misogyny sometimes but I tried to ignore it. Eventually thought I had to stop watching. Not only is the franchise overdone and tired, I just couldn’t pretend I was OK with these men going beyond make up and hip pads and actually having BBLs and tons of lip filler to emulate a completely pornified idea of what it is to be a woman.

I don’t see why drag queens reading to children has to be thing either. What is it supposed to achieve? And if drag queens need to teach children lessons about being liberal, why not get in some women from strip clubs? They have sparkly costumes too 🙄

I think Lily was OK - a different sort of drag but not this sort of ‘see what a PROPER woman looks like’ drag that we’re seeing now. The act was always very funny. Ru also does his stuff well and is a great performer. But the Drag Race stuff has really done the damage of making it more about the look and less about the content. Without good content, it really is just about a distorted sexualised version of womanhood, punching down as you say.

Mixing drag up with trans is also silly. Drag queens were always men dressed as women. It’s not their gender identity. It’s become a thing to credit Marsha Johnson as a ‘transwoman’ who started the Stonewall riots for example. But Marsha was a drag queen (Malcolm) who never claimed to be a woman and who didn’t start the riot in any case.

We cross posted but I see we totally agree!

I think Helen really does have a drink problem. She got ‘so tipsy’ she slept in her clothes. I like (love) a drink but this is not normal.
Also she looks dead behind the eyes, they’re all rheumy and dull. I hope she gets help

I agree. I did one of those NHS quizzes about my alcohol consumption recently and it strikes me that Helen’s responses, based purely on the information she puts online, would put her firmly in the problematic drinker category.

She appears to be child-free for a good chunk of every week and the occasions she does have the kids, she regularly posts about being hungover whilst she's with them. Who knows if she's an alcoholic but she does spout more tit than Ellie does about parenting-related matters.

Ellie certainly still seems to be mostly living the life of a fairly normal SE London mum, despite the celebrity stuff. Helen doesn’t.

The stuff she does about piles of washing etc just feels quite forced.

Ellie did a podcast recently about cutting down on alcohol. I wonder if she’s worried about Helen.

Yawn another "did a race with a new PB, had a takeaway, drank all the wine, smoked all the fags blah blah blah" 😴

Yes I'm bitter, as someone who LOVES long distance running but can't ever seem to get any faster thanks to living with chronic pain so it's always a slow effort 🙁

Do wonder how much longer her body is going to tolerate the wine/fags/takeaway diet before something goes wrong. And yes I’m bitter too about her running improvement. Sure each minute she gets faster is going on my times as I’m getting slower!!

She could of course be lying about it all for the ‘gram with regards to booze and fags and kebabs before every run. She does tag in a running coach and a nutritionist in most of her posts so it’s likely to all be performative BS

It’s just bloody boring though. She sounds like an 18 year old at freshers week trying to make their friends who stayed at home jealous.

Drink, smoke, just shut up about it.

It’s an entertaining and also quite productive mid-life crisis. Mine was not spent running extremely fast, I tell ya!

Her life seems very chaotic. I’m a single parent and my house does not look like hers! Surely she has the time to tidy. And for 3 of them how much washing is there? I do about 3 loads a week. Which doesn’t take any time.

I can’t bear all the ‘we didn’t brush our teeth for 6 weeks and just ate donuts, but we’re happy’ tit. It’s all so performative. And a sign of deep unhappiness sadly. I’m awaiting the rehab diaries soon.
