A close family member used to be a drag act back in the 60s. He’s gay and back then, drag in the gay community was about giving a big duck You to homophobia.
And if you look at the drag of the 80s like with Les Dawson or Barry Humphries - those were sort of love letters to women in a way, not sexualised, just strong and funny characters with depth.
It all went wrong around Lily Savage/early Ru Paul, when it started to evolve into something more cruel and derogatory. There’s something hateful about drag now and the way it caricatures and objectifies women.
Like I said; old drag used to punch up, today it punches down on women.
