I thought she bought it when she was 17?18? In my mind, her parents either bought it for her or she used her trust fund to buy it. Maybe I’m just skeptical. I had a friend at uni who within two months of graduating bought a house with money from her parents. She currently charges her housemates for rent and it’s all in her name, nice work if you can get it 😂

I remember she once studied by making a giant quizlet set, which seemed kinda odd to me. I'd imagine flash cards are better suited for STEM, where everything is fact-based and has a strict definition. But then again I'm not a humanities person so I don't know for sure.

Much as I agree, she is an adult and her parents can't really tell her how to spend her time. She does have her writing and YouTube, but you're right, nothing very sociable.
Oh, of course, she's an adult and can do what she likes.

I was thinking more when she was 15/16, she was behaving this way and her parents should have intervened then.

How is she capable of simultaneously looking like an old lady and a little girl but not like a 20 year old? 🤣

Yeah, I posted a similar idea on GG about the possibility of them having problems in the house and that maybe being the last straw to the decision of going back home. I think that's plausible.
Yeah, Ruby hasn't really twigged how to dress vintage in a modern way. So many people on YouTube could be her inspiration (e.g. Jessica Kellgren-Fozard).

Those glasses also really don't suit her - clear frames are hard to pull off at the best of times, but the lenses are also way too big for her face.

If you’ve ever read The Secret History by Donna Tartt then that’s a good example of what dark academia is.

I can see how dark academia is exclusive of PoC as a concept in real life as it’s based on old universities like Oxbridge. However, as an aesthetic, I don’t see how it’s excluding PoC. There’s nothing stopping people from dressing or decorating their room in that particular aesthetic. Feel free to correct me, though. It’s an interesting topic. :)
I think as an aesthetic it’s fine - it’s just the idea of historically less inclusive schools and universities being a main driver of said aesthetic. I think buying into the exclusivity of it knowingly and without openly discussing is problematic but the aesthetic itself is gorgeous and I love it!

Ruby, you can’t pronounce dark academia correctly, you didn’t get into Oxford, you don’t read classic literature - you still read Harry Potter and The Little Princess. To me, these are her “Hermoine: How to be” series

how can you sit there and say you don’t recommend “working past your limit” YOU POST 13hour study with me days.

I can’t with this girl.

It’s toe thumbs, quite a few people have it, I also don’t think she cuts her nails properly either
I can’t stop staring at them, they kinda creep me out. I think it’s because I don’t like toes 😂

From the description, it sounds like she doesn't plan to go back this academic year (as she said she was changing her 'permanent' address to home).

Also, she has so much STUFF at university. Lots of knick-knacks and clutter. I understand wanting to put that personal touch on a room, but does she really need so many soft furnishings, and water colour paints? Student accommodation is meant to be pretty transient, so it's not like she permanently rents/owns the property. Having so much stuff just increases the hassle when you have to move/move out, which students do every year.
I have lots of personal Knick knacks and stuff at uni but not half as much as Ruby - there is minimal room in university rooms and if you go home for holidays back to your old room you don’t want to have taken everything to uni. The thing that got me was that she kept her uni books in the wardrobe. I know she didn’t have a bookcase but she did have desk drawers - it’s not really productive if your books are in the top part of the wardrobe??

She’s now promoting the covid app. I can’t believe that the government would actually pay a studytuber to promote the covid rules.
Perhaps not enough young people have signed up so they are doing targeted influencer ads? I’m astonished. I would have thought influencers would give the distancing reminders for free anyway, as good citizens? Like a simple “don’t forget your masks, guys”

Yes, technically she is in her third year, the second year of her new program. I'm the same age as Ruby and decided to stay home this year because my uni is across the country (Canada) and all remote. It was still a pretty tough decision. I'm not surprised at all by this move of hers, I was pretty taken aback when I found out she was moving back out to Exeter at the start of the school year.

With that massive house of hers, she could probably simulate living alone... other people could be in the house and you wouldn't even know it 😅

Also, does anyone know what happened to that cottage she bought?? I can't even find the original video anymore

I found ruby (and then the whole studytube... mess) by accident years ago and used to watch her because she made me laugh until I was physically in pain/weeping, but I kinda have a soft spot for her tbh. She's silly and still thinks that non stop work equates to academic rigour but I think she's more genuine than the rest of them, even if her priorities are a little kooky dooks lol. But yeah not a huge fan of the cardigans or the diet/exercise thing she's doing now.

WRT her staying in academia, I can't really see her doing anything else because it's literally the sole thing she does? I wonder if she'll reapply to Oxbridge. Hopefully now she's not just doing rote learning (although she tries so hard to make it that) she'll be a little more critically engaged, I feel like she breezed through GCSEs etc because she just revises until she can burp it up.

Yeah that first outfit is great! Not a fan of the hairstyle with it, but that outfit is exactly what you would expect from a 20 year old, not the pinafore outfits that you get if you swipe through the photos.
I think pinafore dresses are actually really cute for 20 somethings too, its just the styling that's key! Like if you put on a nice white button up shirt under a black pinafore or a floral shirt and wear a nice duffel coat for autumn/winter over it, i think its really cute! Think Rachel Green vibes!

I was wondering about her flatmates from last year and if she was still friendly with them. I'm going to guess no! 😂 I think Ruby would be difficult to live with if you were a non study obsessed, average 19 year old.
To be fair, who she shared with last year might have all been doing a placement year this year (not sure if thats still a thing with covid??). I know from personal experience as I had to rent with a bunch of random people in my third year as all of my housemates in 2nd year went on to do a placement leaving me alone :(

I do think she should address her moving back home in a video rather than the description though, I'm sure a lot of people don't read the description and it feels so weird watching out of date material which she's marketed as current

I’m sort of in the same situation. I’d love to be at home right now since most of my teaching is online but I’ve signed a contract and I know I wouldn’t be productive at home - My uni and home are both tier 3 so either way it’s high risk. It’s all part of having to make sacrifices, just like everyone is having to do!
I think Ruby worker herself up a bit especially since she hadn’t even been in a shop and then jumped straight into living alone again
Yes this is the same situation a lot of students are in. But ruby is never going to get over her fears about covid or staying home alone if she just moves home when she’s scared. If she wanted she could have just stayed inside at uni, she was only living with one housemate - there really is little risk if you isolate yourself and don’t see anyone

Can someone please explain to me about the accents, what is her accent and what are the accents of her family? Like whats the difference between them, I can tell they’re different but what are their accents actually called? And where abouts are they from in the UK?
Her family are standard southern U.K. accents, Ruby’s is false Emma Watson which she’s spent years trying to perfect...

Some things I picked up in her latest video:

- I find it weird that she's still uploading uni routines without updating the narration to mention she's at home? I'd guess this routine is about 3 weeks old by now.
- I'm quite sad for her that she did go home considering how well her and Blakeney seem to get along. I hope Blakeney is also okay.
- Journalling a coronavirus update every night? She says it will be interesting but imo seems to point to even more anxiety.
- This vlog was filmed after she had already decided to come home. Journal says she'd decided to remote learn that day and confirmed it with the uni. (I wonder if she'd told Blakeney)
- In the 'good things that happened today' section of her journal it says "found out that Martha is coming home too!" So Martha also seems to have come home from Sheffield. Perhaps at their parents' insistence? I honestly thought Martha would have preferred to stay.
- She writes in her journal how "London is already on tier two lockdown; I don't understand why Exeter isn't" - more covid anxiety, maybe contributing to her decision to come home

I don't know why she would write about Exeter needing to be in Tier 2 Lockdown, I also go there and the cases have been lower than average and I'm from London, so in reality I am much more safer here than there. It's not making sense, she's been going out to restaurants too...she just wanted to justify herself going back and I understand, some people at uni have had a lot going on mentally and it is affecting them but writing that doesn't give that implication at all.
Also, Martha shouldn't be coming home from a higher risk area.

I don't understand the obsession with reading a book whilst brushing teeth.

1. Surely you only brush teeth for a couple of minutes and therefore only read a page.
2. Surely as it is a paper copy you would get splashes on it
3. Can you not be alone with random thoughts for 2 mins that you have to escape into fiction? It just seems a really unpractical task to multitask. An audio book on the other hand, fine, if you are already listening.

I think Ruby is a kind soul but she is certainly in her bubble of privilege.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong because I'm not sure BUT doesn't Hermione Granger do that in the books? Or did I imagine that?

elena handtrack posted last night a couple of stories explaining the differences between #gifted, #ad and #unpaidad, and as far as i know, (maybe i understood it wrong) there's nothing bad about a #gifted product, right? it's just that one shop decides to send a product to an influencer for free and they decide (or not) to share it...
maybe i'm missing something? why are all of you concerned about it? (please understand that i'm not an expert on this matter, i'm truly curious to know why ruby's post might be a problem!! thank you❤)
Because if you are in a privileged enough position to receive free products and then choose to use them, you need to be openly transparent about it. The business has gifted them for a reason, advertising.. it really isn’t difficult to write ad or gifted in a font in a size that people can see clearly there is no shame in it, at the end of the day they’ve accepted the item and they’re using it so it’s expected of them to be transparent and in doing so encourage sales to the brand.

If you don’t find it an issue that’s fine, but personally I do. Not everyone is fortunate enough to be in such a position to receive items for free, especially in this current climate. Acknowledging their privilege is a decent human thing to do. IMO.
