Is it not concerning that both Jack and Ruby are English lit students, went to good universities yet struggle to describe books ? The descriptions they give are just the blurbs on the back.
It's not surprising. Neither of them even reads the majority of the books they claim to, so they're not going to have anything to say about the contents of the books.
They both went to universities who're high on the list of unis that are suspected to employ grade inflation to boost their apparent prestige and teaching quality and remain attractive to prospective students wanting to hand over tuition cash (just under 40% of students attending Exeter get a First, while 43% of Durham Uni students get Firsts and 95% get a 2:1 or above, and the numbers go up every year).
That's not to say there's not a lot of incredibly intelligent, hard-working students at both universities, but the students like Ruby, who gamed the system, skipped the required reading and shortcutted their way through clearly weren't exactly held up to close scrutiny, either.
I don't know what Jack was like at uni, so maybe he put in the work, but Ruby showed often that she didn't read the assigned books or come up with her own thoughts, but was still rewarded with Firsts for her system of reverse-engineering essays from other people's work. Her lecturers/tutors either never noticed, or never called her out for it, so Ruby has never needed to do anything differently (until her dissertation, but even that doesn't appear to have pulled her grade down). She's never learned to think critically for herself, and took the easy way out every time, so even if she does read a book, she doesn't have the natural intelligence or basic critical ability to say anything about it for herself anyway.
Since then, they've gotten an abundance of praise and jealousy from their fans for offering brief, superficial plot summaries of books they clearly haven't read and lying their way through "I read 8.3 billion books this year!" videos. Both are ranked among the best and most followed reviewers on Goodreads despite offering up nothing but a combination of vague plot blurbs or outright gibberish. Both are egotistical enough to be happy lying about their accomplishments for hollow praise, so they're not going to push themselves to try harder now if they're both lazy, unoriginal clowns getting rewarded for nothing.
This may just be my imagination but I've noticed that if you compare Ruby's most recent videos to ones from 3+ years ago, her fake posh accent is so much stronger now, she didn't over enunciate as much back then. I wonder why she's ramped it up when she's mostly dropped the Hermione imitation thing?
I'd say it's likely that she's spent the past two years alone in her bedroom and has just committed to much, much longer there. She dresses and imitates the vocal inflections of whoever she's around - at uni it was Blakeney, when she's with her sister she sounds like her, but alone in her bedroom talking to the internet, she's just an alien collection of fake posh cadences stolen from fictional children that get worse the longer she sits there. She wants to be a child again more than ever now that she's graduated, so she's gone all in on imitating Hermione's voice again.
And she's also probably trying to overcompensate much more after the ego-bruising she got from her dissertation disaster to show how smart she is to her young fans, so she's cranked it up 300% - in Ruby's mind, nobody without a posh accent can be intelligent, and hers is THE MYOST POSHEST, JANUINELY.
