Obsessed with her describing F.Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda's marriage as "strange" he locked her in an asylum I don't think strange is the correct word but pop off.
Also she mispronounced Joan Didion's last name, this is why I wanted to gate keep my queen Joan from her.
Oh my Lord I love Joan Didion. Did you see the Netflix documentary about her?

Sometimes you just need the original words in whole to put it in context. The full essay is here: https://myweb.scu.edu.tw/~jmklassen/scu99b/chlitgrad/3ways.pdf

ps: at the risk of blowing my own trumpet, my dissertation very much validated that that consuming/studying Children’s Lit as an adult can be academically fulfilling - if you do so in the true spirit of Lewis’ words! I got a 1st for my dissertation, which was the only first of my 3rd year. Sure, that makes me very different from Rubes who - potentially - got a 1st in everything but her dissertation. However, it did show the merits of returning to children’s literature, with an adult’s perspective, to see things you may otherwise not! And for that alone I count my lucky stars I am not living in the perpetual state of childhood that Ruby is.
Sounds really interesting! Is it available to read anywhere? Congratulations btw!

I’m autistic and can confirm this is a thing bc I’ve been doing it for years. Before my diagnosis, I thought I just really liked the character, but it was more than that. Can’t say for sure in Ruby’s case but it’s an interesting observation. It’s not typically harmful but it can affect your sense of identity, which we know Ruby struggles with. However, hers seems more to do with clinging to childhood hence why she’s so obsessed with fictional children. Still, who really knows.

Oh thank you for posting that quote, I really liked reading it! And yeah Ruby totally misunderstood poor C. S. Lewis didn't she. Using his metaphors, Ruby wouldn't even be a train moving from station to station, she'd just be a thin little train engine (dressed up as a Victorian train engine) sitting in the station, refusing to move.

Is it not concerning that both Jack and Ruby are English lit students, went to good universities yet struggle to describe books ? The descriptions they give are just the blurbs on the back.

I find it incredibly ironic that she claims her favourite book of the year is A Room of One's Own, when the most famous quote from that book literally calls out class and financial privilege being the deciding factor in being a (female) writer.
We are constantly discussing how blind she is to the fact that most people cannot force themselves to write 24 hours a day because they have to work to survive (that is, they don't have the money that Woolf says is necessary to be able to dedicate yourself to writing), and she comes out and talks about this essay while not once addressing the elephant in the room lol

My graduation is on the 13th and i found out my final grade on monday. Feel like there's no way Ruby hasn't found out hers yet seeing as her graduation is earlier than mine? What's she hiding?

she's not hiding that she's got her results, she mentioned on an insta story she already got her grade, and said a video is coming, she just hasnt told us what the results are yet. idk what the delay is though. i'm thinking maybe shes incorporating the clip of her opening her results into a vlog (she was visiting some other city a couple of days ago i think) rather than uploading it as a standalone video so she might have more to edit?

This may just be my imagination but I've noticed that if you compare Ruby's most recent videos to ones from 3+ years ago, her fake posh accent is so much stronger now, she didn't over enunciate as much back then. I wonder why she's ramped it up when she's mostly dropped the Hermione imitation thing?

Armchair Psycho-analysis time:

I think she's clinging to childhood more out of her fear of actually stepping into the real world. When we make big life transitions, it can be easy to cling to a previous stage where things were more certain. Part of my return to Ruby is this, in fact, as I'm now making that jump from the end of my adolesence (because lets be honest, undergraduate studies are hardly true adulthood if you went straight into them from school) into adulthood. In many ways I feel the urge to regress to being 16 again, but unlike Ruby I don't have the pivilege of living that fantasy and living with mum and dad (not that my parents wouldn't let me, more they know it's for the best to encourage me to get and keep my own independence.)

I'm mainly just repeating what everyone here keeps saying, but it's really not healthy to be actively ignoring the adult world when you're just about to enter it. Sure, in many ways it sucks, but in many other ways it's really cool to be independent and able to go where you like and do what you want.

It's not surprising. Neither of them even reads the majority of the books they claim to, so they're not going to have anything to say about the contents of the books.

They both went to universities who're high on the list of unis that are suspected to employ grade inflation to boost their apparent prestige and teaching quality and remain attractive to prospective students wanting to hand over tuition cash (just under 40% of students attending Exeter get a First, while 43% of Durham Uni students get Firsts and 95% get a 2:1 or above, and the numbers go up every year).

That's not to say there's not a lot of incredibly intelligent, hard-working students at both universities, but the students like Ruby, who gamed the system, skipped the required reading and shortcutted their way through clearly weren't exactly held up to close scrutiny, either.

I don't know what Jack was like at uni, so maybe he put in the work, but Ruby showed often that she didn't read the assigned books or come up with her own thoughts, but was still rewarded with Firsts for her system of reverse-engineering essays from other people's work. Her lecturers/tutors either never noticed, or never called her out for it, so Ruby has never needed to do anything differently (until her dissertation, but even that doesn't appear to have pulled her grade down). She's never learned to think critically for herself, and took the easy way out every time, so even if she does read a book, she doesn't have the natural intelligence or basic critical ability to say anything about it for herself anyway.

Since then, they've gotten an abundance of praise and jealousy from their fans for offering brief, superficial plot summaries of books they clearly haven't read and lying their way through "I read 8.3 billion books this year!" videos. Both are ranked among the best and most followed reviewers on Goodreads despite offering up nothing but a combination of vague plot blurbs or outright gibberish. Both are egotistical enough to be happy lying about their accomplishments for hollow praise, so they're not going to push themselves to try harder now if they're both lazy, unoriginal clowns getting rewarded for nothing.

I'd say it's likely that she's spent the past two years alone in her bedroom and has just committed to much, much longer there. She dresses and imitates the vocal inflections of whoever she's around - at uni it was Blakeney, when she's with her sister she sounds like her, but alone in her bedroom talking to the internet, she's just an alien collection of fake posh cadences stolen from fictional children that get worse the longer she sits there. She wants to be a child again more than ever now that she's graduated, so she's gone all in on imitating Hermione's voice again.

And she's also probably trying to overcompensate much more after the ego-bruising she got from her dissertation disaster to show how smart she is to her young fans, so she's cranked it up 300% - in Ruby's mind, nobody without a posh accent can be intelligent, and hers is THE MYOST POSHEST, JANUINELY.

Wow, she met up with Dakota Warren...I can't think of two people who are more different from each other. I really hope they film something together, the comedic potential is giving me life.

I'm sorry but who is Dakota Warren? Explanations, please!
tiktoker turned book tuber and 'author' who thinks reading Russian classics and being a hedonist makes up for a lack of personality
her hedonism is just drinking wine and eating a cheese board btw she's hardly Dorian Grey

Will Ruby adopt Dakota's accent after 5 minutes of socialising and end up sounding like some blend of Australian-Canadian Cockney Victorian?
Will Ruby imitate Dakota's wardrobe and start cosplaying as Sabrina Spellman for her entire waking life now, too?
Will Ruby ever engage in any social interaction that's not a playdate arranged by her parents or managers?
Will Ruby start shoehorning undeclared ads and plant reviews for Dakota's book into her content at the request of her managers like she did with Vee?
Will the smog from their combined pretentious, idiotic conversation cause a new climate emergency in the south of England?

So many questions...
