ruby’s latest stories talk about putting academic output in to perceptive after spending every waking minute on it for the past four years 🤨 looking for to her not taking that energy into her inevitable masters degree ✌🏻
Whilst I don’t mean to pee on her cornflakes and everyone should take time to relax and celebrate achievements, what she’s saying really is such an illustration of her privilege. Most people in her position right now need to be thinking about finding a job, sorting out housing and so on. It’s hard because you don’t want to play stress Top Trumps but Ruby has been in such a gilded position - literally ALL she has had to think about recently is studying. She doesn’t have to work (ok I know she ‘works’ on YouTube but the effort there is … minimal), she hasn’t been applying for graduate jobs or internships, she isn’t having to look for housing, she isn’t applying for further study. She’s back at home and isn’t worrying about bills or looking after herself, just ‘studying’ endlessly and living in some protracted adolescence where school is the main thing and mummy and daddy take care of everything else.

I just can’t imagine being that age and a student, and having nothing but my degree to think about. That is one of the things that annoys me a bit about her in that she rarely acknowledges that (apart from the odd ‘I’m syooo, syooo lucky’ in a video) and doesn’t highlight how unrealistic it is for most people to be able to do what she does. I wonder how many people watch her videos and beat themselves up because they can’t spend the time that Ruby does on their academics, not realising that it is literally all she does.

In the photos on the red carpet she’s wearing the black dress, but I’m the photos her mum took at home she’s wearing her tailcoat.

Did a stylist tell her she had to take it off when she got there? 😂 Really wouldn’t surprise me tbh

Ruby reposted this on her ig stories. I agree with the message, but it's a bit rich coming from Ruby!!

Was really hoping the new video was "Ruby in Boston" (a la Eloise, except she never leaves her dorm) but the Ruby gods above cannot grant such a destitute wish of mine
I believe she has some international travel planned with Mother Granger and Daddy Bones for later on in the year, so watch out for her ”solo travel” vlogs 😂

I think she thinks tv is beneath her. That claiming she doesn’t watch it, or only very small chunks, makes her superior to those lazy, unproductive mortals. She hates tv as much as she loves reading 🙄

Here’s a sample of the type of work she submits. I feel like a graduating English student ought to be able to distinguish between ”cite” and ”quote” and use a simple expression like ”in spite of”/”despite” correctly.

Holy mother of waffling, this essay is incredibly inefficient at getting to a basic point that Lemony Snicket is a didactic narrator, but also diverges from it in key, and still unknown as of yet, ways. There are so many filler words "gloomy and ominous" could just be "ominous", or better yet, "foreboding" likely covers what Rubius was trying to convey with both words. It's also like she doesn't know what pronouns are? She wrote "The Bad Beginning" and "narrator" so many times and with sentence restructuring it could have easily been "that/it" and "he" and cut down on words and repetitive phrasing. The sentence describing the plot of the book is a serious run-on and should have been cut in two. It would have read better and been easier to understand.

Also, this might be a regional thing, but across the pond in the US, we were told to never use parentheses unless it's a translation of a foreign word, a citation, or something else I don't remember. The reasoning being that commas suffice and that it's used as a lazy way to pack in aside information that doesn't have bearing to the main thesis. While I think this is mostly BS, I'm surprised that Rubidium has gotten away with it for so long and not been penalized. Especially since whatever writing I've seen of hers, whatever was in the parentheses was totally irrelevant. In my high school, this wouldn't have gotten higher than a C. How is this acceptable in a university?

Also Rubelite, I'd like to point out that I'm an engineering major. Yep, the major notorious for having poor communication skills and a loose grasp on English. I haven't taken a humanities course in several years, but I can still easily find problems with your writing as a 4th year English student. I think that's a fucking problem, don't you?

Just because you're 'good enough' for Oxbridge, that doesn't mean you should apply.
  • Oxford and Cambridge offer a smaller range of courses and subject combinations than most other universities. This is not good if you don't want to specialise early or prefer a more Liberal Arts style curriculum.
  • Some courses are not available, e.g. aspiring marine biologists/oceanographers would be better applying to Southampton because of its facilities, proximity to the ocean and specialist course. If you applied to Cambridge you'd need to wade through the entire Natural Sciences Tripos. Just to use one example from many.
  • Research strength doesn't always translate into teaching quality. Many lecturers are more interested in their research than teaching undergrads. Just saying.
  • Many of these courses are very traditional which will suit some people but not others. Personally, I'd prefer a more flexible course, even though I appreciate the thoroughness of the Ox/Cam ones. Example: English at Oxford is very chronological in its structure, so if your main interest is in modern, American or foreign lit then its better to apply somewhere different, maybe for a comparative literature course instead.
  • The assessments are heavily exam-based. Yes, there's a dissertation for essay subjects, but most of the assessment for arts subjects is based around 3-hour written exams. Again, if you're great at coursework but not timed exams then perhaps reconsider. Having your degree graded on the basis of a final year exam marathon increases the stress SO much more than if you're being assessed throughout your course via a mix of assignments, projects, presentations, essays, etc.
  • Short terms and intense workload mean that there's extra stress. Students with mental health conditions will be especially affected by this. I decided against applying to either of these unis for mental health reasons and have no regrets.
  • It's harder to have a balance between academic work and student life. Because Oxford/Cam both emphasise the academic side, it might not be possible to take advantage of all the extra-curriculars and student clubs offered at university. I think that's sad.
  • Even a first from Oxbridge doesn't mean you'll have good job prospects. To explain: a lot of the newer, less traditional universities are much better when it comes to offering work placements and preparing students for the workplace. This won't be a factor for everyone - some people just want a purely academic degree - but I've definitely known people flounder post-graduation, many ending up overqualified for the work they're doing and frustrated by it, whereas others from less prestigious unis go straight into a job and work their way up.
Wish I'd thought of that when I was rejected from Oxford... I sent a snarky email in reply telling them I would've rejected them anyway lmao

Also, one point I had to consider when picking University is the fact that you literally aren't allowed to work during timetime at Oxford/Cambridge. They literally won't let you. Which is the biggest pile of classist bullshit I ever heard. Of course Roobee in her Victorian-era manor housecomplete with mummified flies would never think about anyone other than her and her privileged upbringing lol. I want to see a video from her picking apart just how privileged she is and pointing out every way she's had a head start in life compared to other, way less privileged people

Someone I know goes to Exeter and they say Ruby is kind of a joke on campus, back when she was around she'd always be vlogging and annoying people with her loud voice, and kinda looked down her nose at everyone who wasn't in her minute circle of equally unappealing and bland 'friends'.

(I also have tea on Jack Edwards but he at least seemed to have fun at university... If you know what I mean...)

Sixteenth "talent" chosen to be embassadors for United World Schools' gala for girls' education. Ruby, whose entire brand has been focused on studying and academia, and who exclusively associates with girl students, is conspicuously absent.

Did she refuse to get involved because this is a charity drive in which she'd have no opportunity to keep the money (like the Ukraine charity fundraiser that she had to be dragged kicking and screaming to do anything for, and even then it was the bare minimum and she looked miserable throughout)? Or have Sixteenth gotten smart enough to keep her far away from any future charity arrangements?

(Also hilarious: She still can't figure out how or when to use emojis, so just duplicated Jade's.)

Her Hermione syndrome is showing again. Not being able to get your point across within the word limit is not a flex Rubella, your professors don't care if a fictional character got good grades doing the same thing. I feel sorry for her advisor, imagine not being able to tell her to fuck off already.

Has the malnutrition fried her writing skills? I'd hate to know how many words she misused and how many sentences she mangled in her dissertation. She's an English student ffs
Content's not much better than the form - "staying happy and healthy is so so necessary for productivity". NO, it is important in and of itself, for fuck's sake! The end goal of being healthy is not productivity, health is important in and of itself! You should prioritize your health even if it makes you unproductive, you are worth more than your supposed "productivity"!

I just can't with her toxic productivity bullshit. Especially since she's preaching this to impressionable young people. :/

I swear that actually is her old school uniform. For some reason I keep getting old Ruby videos recommended and I recently watched a ‘six am school routine’ or something and I’m sure she’s wearing that very same outfit and tie. Clearly for this event she got to cosplay as Head Girl again and she’s loving it.
Yeah, she wore that shirt and tie along with a school jumper and school skirt to 6th form everyday, despite her school not requiring 6th formers to wear a specific uniform. Usually students of that age group can choose to wear any sort of smart-looking clothing. You think most 16-18 year olds would like the freedom to express themselves a little but not Rubes, she always had to look like a quaint little schoolgirl. Does anyone remember the video where she was getting ready for school and she wore a big cape leaving the house? 🤣🤣🤣

Seriously, why are there frozen peas (basicaly inedible) on top of cereal and blueberries and peanut butter?! In what world of cuisine does that work? Frozen peas! For breakfast?!
