I think the fact that she reads books all in one go probably contributes to why she loves all of them, she gets swept up in the story and doesn't absorb enough to think critically about it.
I think that's probably true to some extent, although I have seen people do readathons and still produce proper analysis, so I'm not sure it's the only reason. But did also find it striking that she seems to like everything she reads - she said she thinks it's because she knows what types of things she likes now, but I'm going with the "easily pleased" option personally.

God the pronunciation killed me. I'm aware it's probably a somewhat pretentious thing to criticise her for, but holy tit how can she not have heard it said out loud before??? The TV show ran for ages, and those books are such staples of British literature I'm baffled as to how she's never heard the name before. Also she seriously sounded like a small child with all her attempts.

Did anyone else think her review system sounded really strange? 5 stars for a book which she criticised for not liking the ending, compared to a book which she didn't really give any clear criticism for, but gave 3 stars? Maybe she just like the idea of Pine more - child narrator and an opportunity to sit in the freezing cold...

Exactly! I appreciate not everyone watches TV but Poirot is one of the most frequently repeated series on typical UK channels and his name is mentioned many times per episode, and he is one of the literary world's most known detective mystery characters. I'm surprised! It's Pwah-row, surely? :D
Yes, I've been saying Pwah-row! There are so many references to Poirot in other areas, and he's such a well known character.

I also found this odd - if she thought the ending was poorly written then surely it wasn't a perfect 5 out of 5? I think it's pretty much the aesthetic of the book that she was rating rather than the actual writing.

If she clearly had no idea how to pronounce Poirot why didn't she just google it? It's not even like she was confident in her pronunciation, she just stumbled through every iteration except the right one.

Ruby reads in the most uncomfortable places - a hard kitchen chair, a hard kitchen floor and and office chair 😅

I’m really surprised she’s never heard how to say “Pwarot”!

The newest video - what the heck? :D She had to read a book for her own bookclub that night, not only did she start reading that book that same day and didn't finish, she also didn't at least start the day of reading with that book?!

Pronunciation aside, her analysis of the Poirot was laughable - suddenly using 1st year lit student vocabulary in every phrase where it's obvious she isn't even fully aware of what the terms mean. People nowadays know what "exposition" is even from memes and such. It really seemed like the book and the plot were too complex to her? Not one of my favourite Christies for sure, but to complain that the exposition comes from dialogue and not an omniscient narrator - in a classic detective book?!

Aga's do get toasty but if they're allowed to cool down enough they're lovely to sit in front of. In a comfy chair or on a soft cushion- not on a solid, freezing, quarry-tiled floor. The lengths she goes to to fit her aesthetic are ridiculous. She really thinks she's hot tit because she sits uncomfortably so she looks like a book character in her mind. How do her family not take the piss out of her for doing such stupid things? Surely they must comment when she's sat in the freezing cold to read a book, or wandering around reciting some dodgy monologue?

Yes!! I read this over Christmas too and sure, it's not super literary but it's definitely not bad, I really enjoyed it. The dialogue keeps it moving which is great because in a mystery/detective story (not a thriller as Ruby said, in my opinion) you don't want to get bogged down in the same point for pages and pages.

I was also trying to work out what she meant when she said Pine was ‘provincial’.

Yeah haha and also she brushes her teeth and stands holding a big heavy hardback book. How is that comfortable. She should be focused on getting her teeth brushed and flossed properly rather than reading

i thought so- it seemed like she was wearing badly-smeared-on concealer too so it's likely. Yet another way she's turning herself into a character that fits her aesthetic
The thing is, it’s all so odd. I have a soft spot for Ruby and Lord knows, we’ve all gone a bit eccentric over the last year, but Ruby just takes it to extremes. Painting on freckles and wearing school dresses (which is going to start attracting a very different audience as she gets older ...) saying that the Aga provides the heating and then sitting outside under a central heating vent, not being able to pronounce character names by authors she’s supposedly fond of. It all just starts to look a bit silly.
