True, in reality she sat crying in her chair while preparing a letter scribed with ink and quill to the lecturer, wherein she listed all the reasons she had ducked up her presentation that clearly weren't her fault.

1. She was distracted by the bullying students on the Zoom call who were sat quietly with looks of bewilderment on her face as she talked about a variety of things unrelated to the topic at hand.
2. Her house was too cold to concentrate.
3. She didn't receive the presentation topic at least 6-12 months in advance to allow her to prepare properly.
4. She was anxious about the 'rona again. (At which point she scrunched up her face and awkwardly rubbed at her eyes to show how superduper honestly really very mostest anxious she truly was.)
5. Her dad received word that one of his tax loopholes might get closed, which caused a lot of stress for the family.
6. She had a nightmare the night before where she had to get a real job, and this left her too scared to focus on the presentation.
7. She couldn't find a relevant Sparknotes entry to steal material from.
8. A bullying commenter online had the audacity to correct her spelling, and this left her in such a state of psychological trauma that it would be impossible to focus on a presentation.

So, naturally, none of it was Ruby's fault.

whatever talk she gave in that video, it obviously wasn't for one of her normal classes. she introduces herself as a second year english student according to her notion notes, which she wouldn't have to do in a class full of her english student peers. i assume it was some kind of extra lecture series exeter organised, accessible to all their students, and invited speakers to. in that context i think it's fair for ruby to introduce herself and explaining that she is an "influencer", as this is the norm for events like that, for speakers to say a few words about who they are. just wondering why exeter thought her being an influencer makes her equipped to speak on digital learning

Sure, it’s clear that it’s some kind of an extra thing she was invited to speak at and I believe she says as much in the video. The thing is, she doesn’t just introduce herself, she devotes half her presentation to talking about herself and how she’s an influencer and basically started studytube singlehandedly. Which has very little to do with the topic of digital learning. She also says after the presentation that she was unsure if the speech she gave was relevant (hey look, finally a glimmer of self-awareness!), which seems to me a pretty clear sign that she did in fact devote a lot of time to talking about ME ME ME ME MEEEE LOOK AT MEEEE.

So it's not surprising she did the same with that presentation. She introduces it like a teacher. "I hope you're all adjusting well to online learning" is not a normal thing for a fellow student to say. They were all suffering through the peak of covid, just say "I hope you're all doing okay in this nightmare year we're having" - for most people, studying isn't the only thing in the world and they have other things to worry about.

Urgh yes! That's what bugged me about her script - it had such an emphasis on her as a person that it must have created such a weird power dynamic with her audience. She should have been making points and then applying real-world examples from her life, not the other way around. She definitely saw herself as a superior font of knowledge and she assumed the 'teacher' role without hesitation. No one (including lecturers, peers, and heck even first years) would have appreciated that know-it-all, wannabe-pantomath attitude.

One thing I have never understood is Ruby's desk. It is small, oddly shaped (I think her father did it?) and messy, with stains, etc.. It isn't a very practical desk for a over-achiever, university student. There is little room to spread things out and even less for storage. Now she has that new chair which is far too low for her and it looks like her chin is the same height as the desk! Now I know why all this excess furniture has landed in her room with little practical purpose. She has to constantly move that table around because it is always in the way. Why not just shove the dang thing into the attic and be done with it....or some other random room in their house? If she has so much money, or her family does, why not splurge and get her a decent desk/work space? I loved my dorm room desk. So wide and deep. I ended up buying a large one that I still own because I like all that space for projects, be it study or art related. I could never work properly at such a confined space as her itty bitty desk. Because it matches that crazy itty bitty random shelf her father recently built? Why?? lol

I think she's trying to say that because she keeps the bulk of the house generally clean, it's fine if there's cobwebs in the corner or dust on the shelves. She's down to earth and not like other housewives. The problem is that the whole house looks dank, dingy and disgusting and its floors and surfaces have never seen a cleaning product in the entire time that family has lived there. Instead she spends her days indulging the childish fancies of her daughter and living a life of leisure.

'Slapdash'? It sounds like she's saying she's half-assed with the cleaning. Their house does look like they could use some thorough housecleaning and de-cluttering. There's a big difference between being a bit messy in a homey sense and being carelessly dirty and leaving things out because you can't be bothered, which is definitely the latter in the Bones household.

Because nothing says "mindful" and "living in the moment" quite like interrupting your reading to grab your phone to take photos of the page you're reading to highlight a passage instead of just...using a highlighter (or note flags if you don't want to deface the book) as you go and type them up later if needed? And Ruby, who never met anything she couldn't turn into an excuse to make five unnecessary Notion lists apparently drew the line at having to type up a book quote? duck off with your lies, Rubes. It's yet another app she'll never use after the sponsor payment clears.

So, I was watching one of her videos from last autumn while I had my lunch (chili and rice, the equivalent of two weeks of Roobee meals I’m sure). It was this one:

Brushing aside the obvious facts that she looks healthier and eats actual food with actual nutritional value, I thought the interesting part in this was the speech she had to give and apparently totally failed at, because she was crying afterwards. So I did a little frame-by-frame sleuthing of her notes, and apparently it was a speech on ”digital learning” that Exeter had asked her to give. I’m not surprised at all that it didn’t go well, because her notes reveal that she went from ”how I got to be a successful influencer” to ”how to curate your own social media platform” to then talking about how difficult it is to adapt to online learning and how it’s important to have a good study space and dress up for lectures. Oh what I wouldn’t give to have seen this trainwreck as it was happening

Man, the formatting of her notes drives me nuts. Why is the capitalization/non-capitalization of each word after the bullet point all over the place? Sloppy!

They are notes though? Aren't notes meant to be rough? If she took the time to make them neat people would criticise her for poor time management.

That video is also incredibly revealing. Obviously nothing has changed at all in her atrocious time management and organisational skills. She's still making a show of complaining that she has so much to do and not enough time, after wasting an hour on making a pointless timetable.

But she says she reads Sparknotes synopses for the books she's assigned before reading the actual book, then shows herself copying almost all of the Sparknotes information into Notion (while complaining that she struggles to remember the characters before even reading the book). Not only is this an insanely baffling, backwards way to learn anything, it's incredibly telling of how she "reads": She doesn't. Even academically, she cheats, the same way she does with the books she pretends to read for personal enjoyment. She reads a synopsis, skims through bits of the actual text to highlight quotes and cobbles together her thoughts based on a Frankensteined list of material she found online.

Tbf, I'm not sure where you got the "hour" from on the timetable. I found the part of the video you meant and I could write that in 2-3 minutes, and it would help me personally. If I don't plan a work day it is easy for me to spend way too long on one task, and just giving a quick estimation of how long each task should take will make me hurry up if I realise it is taking too long.

It's great that to-do lists help you - they help me too, and I'm sure a lot of other people on the thread can agree! But Ruby isn't just any random person just trying to get by. She has an audience of multiple hundred thousand - an impressionable audience at that! - some of her videos have millions of views, and that means a degree of responsibility. She's constantly sending out the message that all of this constant, neverending busywork is necessary to succeed at school or university, and giving herself so much extra pointless work to do, then telling everyone else to do the same. Just look at her '35 things to do before school starts' video as an example. She's actively making money from being seen as an authority figure teaching people how to study and be successful, but then she's also wasting so much time and coming out with half-assed, blindingly inefficient work. The to-do lists are part of the much wider problem of her content in general, even if they're an effective organisational strategy in isolation.
