John Cannan is pretty much acknowledged as the main suspect there, but he refuses to say anything.
The police actually named him as their prime and only suspect in 2002. I remember the press conference they gave.

But that didn't stop the press then trying to link it to Steve Wright, who targeted street sex workers, because they once worked on the same ship together with hundreds of other people 🙄

My guess is John Cannon is the right guy. He did the same thing to another young woman, fortunately he was caught for that.

I think I'm right in saying it was a largely residential area, and Ring cameras weren't invented then. It's not inconceivable that the CCTV evidence is so limited.

Such a sad case. I really hope the mystery is solved for her family. It's unthinkable to go through that.
Very true! Didn't think of that. Still only feels like a year or 2 ago, not 11 years ago. Cases like this must be absoloutely devastating as there is no conclusion.

I've just watched The Disappearance of Luke Durbin, which was on C5 last night

I've always had an interest in this case as I lived in Ipswich when he went missing, about ten minutes drive from the Zest nightclub actually. I was well over my clubbing days by then and I knew nothing about the 'scene' but the club was well known for being a "drug club" - it was actually closed for good not long afterwards when a lad from London was shot dead there. I'm not from the area originally - just bought a house, because it was cheaper, and basically went to work (in Essex) and slept there - consequently, I didn't hear any local rumours about the case.

I'd always assumed Luke must have taken drugs, to go to that particular club, but he was last seen at the bus station which is quite a way from it so I didn't think it was connected.

But now we find out that he was not only using drugs but actually a drug dealer with a county lines drug debt! Why the hell have we had to wait FOURTEEN YEARS for this VERY pertinent information? Well, we know why - because he wasn't the nice, quiet boy who loved music who just worked at a greengrocers - he was a drug dealer and it changes people's view of them. And the car they have repeated appealed for information on - it was seen on CCTV close to where Luke was last seen - had connections to the drug world.

I do really feel for his mum, Nicki, as she looks like a broken woman who has worked tirelessly to find him, but she had obviously lost control of him (the programme stayed he started drug dealing when he was sixteen) knew nothing about this secret life and wanted to keep this information hidden from the public. But should have been made known at the very start. I am really angry.

I’ve recorded that to watch. But you’re right, it was pertinent information.

Going back to the Claudia Lawrence case, the police had no hesitation in talking about her private life because it was deemed as pertinent. This is a woman who is very likely dead and they open her life for all to see, yet a drug dealers life would appear to be sacrosanct where details can’t be told. If Claudia’s life was opened (a victim) then why wasn’t his?

ive always felt really sad about Claudia Lawrence disappearance. it must be bad enough for her family not knowing whats happened to her whether she is alive or dead, but the press seemed to be fixated on what she may have done in her private life. same with the young girl who was recently murdered in New Zealand.
theres something so distasteful about it .. almost like publically shaming someone who cant defend themselves. it must be horrifying for the families the world being told salacious details about your dead childs sex life just to sell papers

She seemed a lovely woman who was probably looking for love, but was most likely used be married man for sex she shouldn’t be ashamed or shamed in the paper they should be she was a single woman she’s free to do as she likes!!!!

Re the New Zealand case. Has the convicted murderer’s identity been realised yet?

Daily Mail had no qualms in naming him at the start and, then again, after conviction even though there is obviously an order in place not to!

The other murder that gripped the nation was the Joanna Yeates murder about 9 years ago in Bristol. The press were like savage dogs trying to pin it on the weirdo Landlord when all along it was the pervy neighbour, & not only that her body was found Xmas day....how can her parents ever have a joyous Xmas ever again...😢

And that was actually quite a straightforward case albeit terrible. But it was Christmas, she was a blonde architect IIRC who had vanished while her boyfriend was away. Weird neighbour, odd looking, eccentric landlord and then there was the missing pizza!!!

But it's weird how some crimes capture the media's attention yet others....

A prime example of this is discussed in Paul Britton's book, The Jigsaw Man.

The murder of Rachel Nickell. A young blonde mum who the press described as a model (not so sure about that but....) who was murdered in a very public place, Wimbledon Common, in front of her young son who was not touched by the killer.

Samanatha Bisset, another pretty blonde mum, who was on benefits IIRC and dabbling, although not very seriously, in escorting, was murdered in her council flat along with her four year old daughter, Jasmine, in a sexually motivated, carefully planned attack. If you've read the details, you'll never forget them. Genuinely, genuinely horrific.

Rachel Nickell's murder was headline news for years. Samantha Bisset barely got a mention. In fact, the lead detective complained to Paul Britton that he just couldn't get the press interested. Chances are unless you've read his book, you've probably never heard of her.

Yet they were both murdered by the same man, Robert Napper.

I used to find reading about murders so interesting... well I did until I read about Junko Furuta. Now I can’t get it out of my mind  any tips?

The same thing with the victims of the Yorkshire Ripper back in the 70s. The first time he murdered a woman who wasn't a sex worker, she was described as his first 'innocent' victim. As if all the other victims deserved to be murdered

I think different cases affect us for different reasons. There’s some that I don’t even look into because of some inbuilt phobia/repulsion of certain things. Maybe look at one that’s ‘easier’ (if I can apply that term to murder). One that delves more into the solving of it rather than the details of the murder itself.

Oh Jesus, the Junko Furuta case is horrendous. I started reading about it and I just had to stop.
I'm the last person that anyone would describe as squeamish, but that was just horrific 😥
