I'm having trouble with my puppy now crate guarding, only seems to be when he is tired at the end of the day but obviously don't want it to escalate. I just haven't really found the group classes that helpful, he gets distracted by the smells in the venue easily. Wondering if anyone else has done 1-2-1 sessions and how many you did? They do blocks of 5 so I'm thinking of doing that.

I've just started 1-2-1 sessions with a private trainer. Felt like the people from the group classes didn't have the experience to deal with large breeds and their needs, so found one that specialises in large and giant breeds.
We've had one session so far, and ive found it's been more helpful than all of the group classes we did put together.
Yes it's considerably more expensive than a group setting, but the tailored experience is more than worth it.

I've just booked some thank you. 5 1hour sessions for £225. I've spent probably about £400 on group classes and don't feel I've learnt much. I'm not that good at remembering what we learnt though as I find it more difficult in the group ones to get him to focus as he just wants to smell the floor so I don't get much practice on what we are learning. Got a group session today and I can't be bothered to go but might as well he definitely won't pass the test next week. I've been busy these past few weeks but my shifts are changing at work which will give me more time to train

That's a good price.
Mine is £650 for 8 2 hour sessions
I found the group classes too stressful, for both me and him. He's a really big dog, even though he's not even a year old yet, and his concentration isn't the best

I think it's meant to be slightly more because if I clicked block booking it was a bit more expensive £255 I think. But I just went on the book one session and then I could select block booking on there which was cheaper so I assume they forgot to change it. Wonder if they'll ask for more.
How long do you leave between sessions? I'll ask the trainer but just wondering.
Went to my group sessions today which was the best one as only 2 others turned up so it was nicer
---
My pups small, 7 months and it's confident/dominant so I'll most likely get him castrated in the next few weeks. Going to ask the trainer what he thinks about it as well.

The majority are 2-3 weeks apart, but due to holidays etc, I've got one on Thursday, then don't have another one until the first week of July.
I think that's good, gives us time to bed in what we have learned in the session

Re castration. We have a rescue from 5 weeks old, 6 months old now. A giant of a dog. We were told they would call us back at 9 months to neuter him and it was part of the agreement we signed when adopting him, but our own vet said they're is no way they would neuter him until he was 2 years old. Because of his size. Any thoughts/ experience of this?

I have one tomorrow then thinking next maybe mid June but also have a holiday booked end of July/august so will have to wait longer between then. The block gives me 6 months to book the 5 sessions

I'd maybe speak to the rescue and say the vet advised you to wait longer and see what they say?

The bigger the dog and breeds known to have joint problems like labs, it’s best to leave as long as possible.

Yep, definitely don't neuter until at least 18 months

Absolutely wait until fully grown / matured.

There is absolutely no benefit to doing it early whereas there are cons. Especially with boy dogs, no harm in waiting.

You cant undo something once its done.

My vet advises not to neuter males now unless you are having specific problems which would be solved. My males have always been entire, no marking, humping or anything of the like.

Realise with a rehome contract youl need to do it though but Id delay with a larger breed. 6 months old is too young.

Hey - little bit off-topic given current discussions. If you haven't already, download the Biscuit app. It basically pays you to walk your dog.

All you do is start the app before your walk and remember to finish it when you get back - or if you're like me half a day later 🤦🏽‍♀️

It only requires you to walk your dog 3 times a week to get 50 "biscuits", each walk you receive 25 "biscuits". I am currently sitting at 40 minutes walking, but this can be split however you want. One big walk, or smaller shorter walks.

You get bonus points for putting in their vaccination details, flea and worm treatments etc. These biscuits earn you points that can be used to buy vouchers for the likes of Tesco, Amazon or even conservation donations.

I've attached the link to the website for you to check it out - Biscuit | Get rewarded for walking your dog | Biscuit (biscuitpetcare.com)

I am in no way affiliated with the app, I know the above probably sounds like it. Just thought some of you might find it useful. Quite good if it's getting to the end of the month and things are a bit tight. A friend done all their shopping for Christmas dinner using all the points they'd earned!

I've been using it since Feb and got at least £60 worth of vouchers so far

My cockapoo is still showing no signs of his testicles descending. We had a check up at 1 and the vet said book him in immediately for exploratory castration, which we did, in the end they anesthetisted him, couldn't feel anything and sent him home with the advice to wait until 18 months.

My worries are two fold really as my groomer said sooner the better as there is a 'ring' that closes? Making the op more difficult?.

Also he is booked in with a dog sitter Aug who only accepts neutered dogs, she knows the situation and has observed him and is happy but I still worry about accidents if he can still produce semen?.

I'm tempted to change vets and get a second opinion as also worried re cancer and non descended testicles.

Had my trainer come out today. My puppy isn't food motivated and the trainer had treats he liked so I just went out to buy them. Come back to try some training with them and he doesn't want to eat them 🙄

Just seen this, am shocked you had to book him in immediately for exploratory castration, at one year old ?
My boys testicles didn't drop, we were advised by the vets to have them removed, but not immediately.
He was 4 when he had the op, found both, we only had it done as it can cause awful problems when they get older.
I would defo go for an opinion with another vet, unfortunately there are vets who are out to make money.
Hope you find the answers you need.

Nothing to do with when to do it but if it was the vets wanting more money then I would've thought that they would've gone ahead with the surgery as it would've been a bigger surgery costing more than if they did drop then he had a normal castration, which they sent them home to wait to see if they do.

I would've thought they would've done it at his age though. You could always ask your vet what's their reason they think they may still drop as you've read online that they won't drop if they haven't already. See if they have a specific reason they think something may happen? Maybe they are thinking if they can't feel anything at all at the moment then a bit longer of a wait they may move a bit to make it possible to feel them at least so they know where to go for surgery? And if they think that may happen it could explain why they anaesthetised him couldn't feel woke him up as maybe they are hoping in a few months they'll at least be able to feel them inside

Thank you for both your replies.

I think the issue was I saw two different vets (same practice) the first said we must do it now, the second performing the op said feasibly they could drop by 18 months (she could only feel one). I suppose they go on their experiences 🤷🏼‍♀️. He's never cocked a leg bless him, I'll be amazed if they do arrive!.

Yes I see what you mean price point wise, the normal castration is half the price. I think I will change however as other issues at play...I pay a monthly subscription for flea and worm tabs that they're meant to post out, they often forget so I have to ring to remind them and then go fetch them - which isn't the convenience I required ☹.

My dog has just turned 8 months, I know not quite a pup anymore but looking for a bit of advice.
He is a black pug, all vet trips been perfectly healthy, fully vaccinated, flea and worm treatment also up to date!
The past day or two he has had a very runny nose, running clear but if he is left to sleep then wakes up to sneeze it's white(ish) and I need to physically wipe it away. Feeling really sorry for him being this congested... He was out a lot at the weekend playing in cut grass and the pollen count was high.
Otherwise, no cough, still has an appetite, sleeping fine and still active at his day care!

It's only been a day and I can start him on antihistamines.. Just wondering if anyone has experienced similar? Obviously if he doesn't improve over the next few days I'll be going to the vets!

Thanks in advance 😊
