Basically, if you are a UK national then your National Insurance Number is randomly drawn.

It's a legal requirement to attend and the chances of getting out of it are very slim.
Just to give another experience, I was called to do jury service twice and each time I wrote back with the reasons why I wouldn't be suitable and that I had no childcare. Courts don't want reluctant jurors and I was excused both times.

Hello

Has anyone ever had a pen pal in prison?
I have just written my first letter to someone and want to know if anyone has any experiences to share or any advice on the type of things to write into the letters?

It's something I have always wanted to do so I finally wrote one! I hope to hear back, it's all very interesting to me
I honestly don’t understand some people. You specifically asked for people who have wrote letters to inmates before, or advice, but then you get slated.

If you don’t agree, haven’t done it or have no advice, then why bother? She doesn’t want or need your opinion, it’s irrelevant.

I’ve thought about it before but only because of a potential area of my career I could branch into. I can definitely see the appeal. I do hope you’ll give an update on how you’re finding the whole process, I’m really interested to read it.

Wow, well I lost most of my Friday evening down the rabbit hole that is write a prisoner .com
I was intrigued to see the crimes committed and how the inmates portray themselves. And for the serious nature of some of the crimes the bios are very light hearted!
So my opinion would be a person would only engage with these people out of morbid curiosity/loneliness. Or having watched too many prison docs on Netflix!
Made an interesting read for a few hours tho, but a penpal isn’t for me!

This is a really interesting thread!

I'm a huge true crime enthusiast and from my reading/ podcast listening I know that I could never write to someone in jail, lots of offenders have sad backgrounds which is awful but for me that doesn't negate the crimes they have committed. I also don't think if i did ever do it I would be doing it for the right reasons - it would be morbid curiosity for me.

For the people who are writing to inmates now and the OP what is it you're hoping to achieve or what's your ideal outcome? I don't mean that in a judgy way at all, I'm genuinely interested in what you'd be getting out of the relationship?

with my penpal, and the charity I chose to sign up with, mean he doesn't get my details in any way he only knows my username and that I am in the UK I can choose what I tell him, I have read the court case, I have heard his side and the prosecutions - I am not judging him he is being judged enough - our chats are mainly almost like a therapy session for him, I do not send him money, I do not worry about falling in love with him.

For some people I guess they have a motive as to why they do it - but for me, I know I would appreciate someone to talk too.
I also take what he says with a pinch of salt too like I do with most people online I've never met.

I did jury duty on a rape case when I was heavily pregnant with my firstborn, and I agree. Upon revealing our verdict, we were then given further background information about the perpetrator that wasn’t given to us prior. It turned out the person had a history of rape and criminal activity in their home country. It was shocking because there were many on the panel who genuinely believed he was innocent. Obviously, there was a guilty majority and he was sentenced. But I imagine most of those who thought he was innocent would have changed their minds after that.
That's awful, I'm sorry you had to go through that. I think people forget how haunting those cases can be on the jury, too.

It’s quite interesting reading some of their bio’s , I’ve already found a rapist murderer and man who’s in for burglary 1 ( I’m not sure what the 1 stands for), I wouldn’t write to them though, I’ve found another who’s out in a few months, I wonder if he’s looking for somewhere to stay!!!
It stands for "first-degree burglary" which in many parts of the USA means he robbed someone's house rather than a business

I can't imagine writing to someone in prison but this is an intriguing thread!

I don't fall into either category as life isn't black and white, crime is so, so complex and usually most could easily fall into it given the 'right ' recipe of circumstances. No such thing as evil. Still doesn't mean that people unrelated to an individual, who otherwise wouldn't come across them in life, should actively seek out to have an involvement with something they are not going to have an objective understanding of. It's very risky even though there will be a physical distance. It's the crime which is the draw. Otherwise you'd just look for any penpal.
That’s fair. I think the issue here is this isn’t what OP has asked. There are some quite loaded questions being asked and people are projecting onto her their own feelings on the situation. I get the impression that perhaps she is just looking for a pen pal. I’m taking her post for face value and not trying to take from it a different motive

I think it’s a really lovely thing to do, I say that honestly btw lol. I admire your enthusiasm for it 😀 I would just worry that some would take advantage of that and would feel they could easily manipulate you.

I’m not going to lie I did find myself on that website a lot today (lockdown 😂) I was actually soo shocked after reading some of their profiles and then when I clicked into the crimes they committed after it was just astounding. Some of them looked and sounded so so normal and even pled their innocence in their bio. When I looked into the crimes they committed there was no way they could have been innocent, for example abducting a stranger, holding her against her will for 5 hours, rape, assault.

It just reminded me of like a Facebook style platform for prisoners lol they can basically just portray whatever side of themselves they want people to see. Quote frightening

I do wish you well with it and hope you so come back up for some updates on how it’s going 😀

Do you watch Love After Lockup? Most of the people on it have found relationships through write a prisoner and have been in relationships for years with the other person on the inside! Some of them even got married in prison despite having never met or known the person on the outside. It’s really interesting.
I live for shows like this 😂 not for me personally, but I just love watching it happen for other people

Me and my friends used to love going on write a prisoner but just to look at their crimes etc. We found it quite interesting! Something I did notice is a lot of them in their bios write their weight! Americans seem to also have that on their driving licence as well! 🤣

Unless you are rejected before the case begins, like I was. To be fair, I wasn't the only one who wasn't picked.
This has happened to me! You wait around all day for them to come and say "oh they've changed to a guilty plea now" and the court didn't even have 4G 😂 longest day of my life

It's something I've never thought about doing to be honest but it sounds interesting! Let us know how you get on? If you get a reply...
What did you say to the prisoner if you don't mind me asking lol! Also what made you pick that particular prisoner ?
I just wrote a bit about myself and then bits about their bio, it said they like to write poems and tell jokes etc.. I just said I enjoy all of those things too. It has taken me a while to find one that I think I could write to! I picked him because I liked his bio and could related to some of the things

I am also looking for a female to write too as well, I found one that hasn't heard from friends and her only family is her grandmother but I couldn't find more details about her case! Some of them are my age and I can imagine some have gone through horrible stuff to get to where they are and made a bad choice!

Yes I found a girl who sounds like that too!! There is someone on there and a documentary was made on him!!!
I think your reasons for doing it are admirable but I hope you’ve done extensive research into the person you’ve written to. I had a nosy at the link you posted and it states that the prisoners provide the reason as to why they’re in prison. The site says that whilst it verifies the info given, in most cases the full scope of their crimes is not detailed. And even if you’re doing this with good intentions the person on the other end could tell you absolutely anything and you’d be none the wiser as to whether it was true.
Yeah I did! I've wanted to do it for a few years now and I saw a few and then looked into their crimes. If I couldn't find more info online then I wouldn't write to that person.

It’s nothing got to do with me though is it? I can’t prevent that happening.
The same as Jimmy’s mother can’t stop him robbing from a shop, of franks sister can’t stop him for fraud?
Just coz I’m talking to someone doesn’t put their faults on me
oh it’s for sure not your fault (if you were in this position)
But you offered them friendship when they should have been repenting for what they’d done.
I just wonder how you would feel knowing you not only offered them friendship you sought them out to offer it,

knowing that they’d had a negative impact on someone else’s life and might do so again 🤷‍♀️

I find this fascinating. Having read some of the profiles on the website, many of them come across as charming in their profiles and then you find out they've committed the most atrocious crimes! 😬

One of my immediate family members was in prison for a few years and I wrote to them regularly. Personally I found it quite draining as I was always concerned about not gloating about how great my life was on the outside and all the fun things I was doing.

Personally I'd be too worried about my safety and privacy to write to someone in this way, and I'd be concerned that there would be an ulterior motive that would surface within a few letters.

Fair play to you for being non-judgemental and believing that people change and deserve second chances. But for me it would depend on the crime. Imagine if your daughter/sister/friend/whoever was murdered or mugged, raped whatever and you found out that the suspect got the privilege of people writing to them in prison and pen pals. I'd find it a smack in the face (again, depending on the severity of the crime).
Oh I agree! I have done my research first since I would feel the same depending on the crime.
Their profiles can be inciting which is why I researched first, one guy's profile made him sound interesting then I saw his crime and it was a big no go for me, couldn't click off his profile quick enough

thing is there is no “excitement” with this, and I think anyone looking to write to a criminal is doing it for those reasons.
It’s self serving not an attempt to do good.

In my opinion!
I have not done it for excitement. Like I said, some are girls my age (late 20's) who are in for 4/5 years for attacking their attacker/abuser.

Maybe I am very naive, but many people are in prison because they’ve done a bad thing, not because they are a bad person. Of course plenty of them are horrendous humans who don’t deserve to see the light of day, and have committed absolutely heinous crimes, and shouldn’t be allowed to breath the same air as the rest of us. However, not all of them fall in to that category.

People can make one very bad judgement calls which land them in prison. It doesn’t mean we need to treat them like they are scum of the earth.

The actual scum in there should be left to rot, though.

This is the second time I’ve seen you being rude to someone on here this week for no reason. I am putting you on ignore. I am all for hearing why people are agasint it but to judge me as a character or to comment what you think is missing in my life is over the line
Totally agree. I think the problem with this is people tend to fall into either one of two categories. Those who believe people should still be treated humanely despite their crimes and are entitled to rehabilitation and the chance to try and continue to live a normal (being locked up isn’t normal) life. Or those who truely cannot see past the crimes people have committed. I genuinely don’t have an issue with either opinion as it’s I think it’s something which can be debated for days on end.

I think if you’re keen on doing it then give it a shot and if it isn’t for you then end the communication. You don’t own these people anything.

My favourites are Red handed and All Killa, No Filla. Love that they're both presented by British women around my age who are funny and engaging, they do a lot of research!

I also listen to:

Wine and Crime - 3 drunk Americans who drink wine and chat true crime, this is the most laid back of them all with the littlest detail but they have funny stories and confessions so you can dip in and out

True Crime Garage - 2 American men, ones voice is just like Rossi from Criminal Minds, they've had John Douglas the famous profiler on their show and really get in to their cases

Seeing Red - another British pod, but more serious

They walk among us - one man presenter with a lot of detail

Crime Junkie - quite short recaps of famous cases

Morbid - mixture of murders and spooky stuff

Crime Weekly - this is quite new and it's presented by youtUber Stephanie Harlowe and a police man so tend to be very detail focused

What podcasts do you listen to? wouldn’t mind listening to some!
My favourite true crime podcast is Redhanded!
Thank you for replying - I'm glad you're looking at other types of penpals too as like many have said there are plenty of lonely people out there, for me I was interested in whether it's inmates specifically you want to engage with and if so why but obviously that's not the case.

All the best with it and stay safe :)

I tried to avoid this thread after making it but I will answer this. Sorry it's long and some points are irrelevant...

I'm in my late 20's, I am also very street wise (as someone suggested I aren't) because I've had to be in my life. I've known both bad & good people who've been in prison, for example someone beat up a known pedophile in the area and got sent away for it, yeah it wasn't a clever thing to do and two wrongs don't make a right but not everyone is a bad person. Another person I know got into a really bad fight, two drunken people and one got the better of the other and got sent away for around 2/3 years. It shouldn't have happened, they both behaved like animals but nobody died or was beat up so badly they were in hospital on the brink of death. She's now out of prison and she's a totally different person, focusing on her career and keeping out of trouble. I've known people come out and either turn their life around completely or go down the same route. Some people continue to be a bad person and I've seen this happen too.

My intention isn't and has never been to "help make these people a better person" or to find romance - as I know this seems to be a trend popular on TikTok. As for my research, I've looked into their crimes, court cases and I've also looked at other people's experiences, read several forums as I would never go into a situation in my life totally blind.

The reason I am (personally) doing it, is just to give these people something to do, someone to talk to, some people are on there for this reason and others have other intentions, sometimes you can see this straight away and some, not so much. I've not picked people who are 'attractive' and I haven't picked someone who's committed an unforgiveable crime either.

American prisons seem to be worse than the UK. There are young girls in there who've maybe robbed a store or attacked someone, sometimes in self defense and sometimes out of anger - which doesn't make it right but sometimes these people find themselves in trouble or live a troubled life, if they haven't committed . People who are in there because of their skin color and so on. I will not be asking about their crime, I am not doing it out of curiosity - it's just something I've always wanted to do and during lockdown and spending it alone looking at my four walls, suffering mentally it made me think of these people, who haven't committed a really bad crime who do this everyday and will be for another year or two, who maybe a few letters might brighten their day.

I used to be a very judgmental person. Assumed everyone who didn't do everything by the book was a bad person. I followed the rules, didn't do anything wrong. Now I am not that person anymore and realize mistakes happen. I'm not saying a mistake is stabbing someone by all means but the likes of fighting, cheating, drug use. I used to think all of these people would go to hell, scum of the earth sort of people. And that said more about me, judging others, than it does to be understanding.

I do not wish to speak to anyone who's committed a horrific crime. I also am now aware of other Pen Pals and it's something I would be interested in too. There's no limit on how many you can have.

I appreciate the nice comments, advice and people who were genuinely concerned and told me to be wary though :) sorry I haven't replied to you all!
