I got really upset this morning driving to work just thinking about how scared he must have been and not being able to get away ☹ they’re just utter monsters the pair of them
The only way I can follow this trial at all is to be quite clinical and detached. Whenever I stop and think about what they really did to him, and the pain and terror he would have felt… I can’t actually bear it.

Oh my, imagine being the pathologist and having to examine Preston and document all of that. I know they are objective in their assessments but she would have come to her own conclusions as to what happened. God bless her for doing such harrowing work and telling Preston’s story when he didn’t have a voice. The details are absolutely damning and I can’t imagine anything at all the defence can offer.

Oh look, can recall throwing the nappy out the window, how long he was out the room etc but can’t recall recording and rewatching a video he made on his phone of a baby dying. That selective memory is very familiar.

The jury will never get over this. It'll haunt them all of their lives.
I know trial by jury is one of the cornerstones of our legal system, but the fact ordinary folk can be plucked off the street and forced to take part in the most harrowing trials really troubles me. Like you say, it will haunt them and yet they had no choice.

Re: the hot tub - I've been in hot tubs (twice - I didn't like them) and apart from the obvious dangers of deep, chlorinated water and slippery babies, surely the temperature is too hot for the comfort of a small child? (Just thinking back to years of testing bathwater with my elbow, here).
Children under 5 shouldn't be in hot tubs at all due to risk of overheating, dehydration and the chemicals they use. Surely checking that is basic childcare.

I'm thinking a big part of at least one of those men wanting a baby was to abuse him. There were photos of Preston's anus and genitals, there's no excuse in the world that makes that okay.
Even if he had a rash or whatever you wouldn't take a photo?
I agree. There’s no way he just woke up one day deciding to sexually abuse their baby. Those urges don’t just appear suddenly, they were already entrenched.

Will be interesting to see whether Varley had previous for any sort of accusations of inappropriate behaviour during his teaching career. His choice of job won’t be a coincidence.

It’s important to remember that when the photo of Preston slumped in his cot, in which he has blue lips because he’s obviously just been horrendously SA and deprived of oxygen, has obvious bodily fluids coming from his mouth, over an area that is stained and tested to show their semen mixed into saliva.. JMF is proven to be in the house the whole time.

Just as an aside , as a HCP I am always suspicious when treating people/ listening to the story of the incident and trying to filter of the story matches the injury
99.9% of the time it does, people are not devious or out to hurt
But this is the hard part, when you come across children in care / families under SW,
Children on protection plans, you have to be super curious on all elements ,
Injury’s / history of event / body language
Demeanours/ interaction of the child and adult
Clothing .. skin level visual assessments

Iv met some manipulative adults in my time, and they are hard fucking work.. they try to charm you, become more overly friendly and use your name when speaking
For me.. all that behavior is logged .. but NHS training drums into you KIDS IN CARE are fucking vulnerable as fuck.. remeber this when seeing them and all contact is reported
So how did these two monsters slip by as a child that was healthy before going to them suddenly started having problems

fucking makes my blood boil

These sickos didn’t see Preston as human, they saw him as an object, a receptacle, an experiment. They treated him coldly from the start, saying he was spoilt and needy, leaving him to cry alone. They made zero attempts to love him, nurture him, keep him safe.
That poor baby was in a living hell, he must have been in constant physical and emotional pain. Especially after he had been with a loving foster mum for his first ten months :(
Like others here, I’m deeply upset by this case but feel I need to see it through to the end.
And I don’t want to hear ‘lessons will be learned’ cos it seems to me that they never are

He’s fucked himself with the leaking bath comment hasn’t he. He must think he’s so clever coming up with these stories, as someone else said he kept pointing out that he’d thrown the bath seat in the sink, because it was clearly never in the bath in the first place.

Reading the part about bruising deep in Preston’s throat has broke my heart. It was obvious that’s the kind of stuff that had been going on but to hear it like that just makes it real. That poor, poor baby. I hope Varley gets absolutely tortured in prison.

When reading the court updates, not one single part of my brain wants to believe that any of it can be true. Varley is a monster.

It occurred to me that my son is the same age as Preston was when he went to live with those monsters. It's an age when they are so full of wonder, excitement and happiness and are so sociable and curious. It just breaks my heart to think how confused he must have been. He is past that newborn potato phase when they have no clue what's going on so he would have known something wasn't right, he would have been scared. I've cuddled my son extra tight tonight for him.

The system is broken and not fit for purpose, as is. It's nothing to do with gay or straight, posters who keep trying to bring it back to that, only reveal their own prejudice
That’s a fair point about people generally being reluctant to report and whistleblow imo. There is always a feeling of “what if I’m wrong/jeopardising my position” but a children’s social workers job is literally to question everything and be an advocate for the child. If they are not bold enough to do it they shouldn’t be in the job. The fact some don’t feel like they can is a system failure as (I think) you pointed out. I do think may has a point that a woman would have been judged more harshly and scrutinised more closely when things were going wrong. Because whether you like it or not, people are not objective and they do make more allowances for men. Prime example is when a Dad “babysits” his own kids or is held up as some shining example for doing the bare minimum expected of the mother.

This case is breaking my heart. That poor poor baby. My youngest son was born only 4 days after little Preston on 20th June 2022 and I just keep looking at him and how happy and innocent he is, growing up and going off to nursery and I can't help thinking little Preston should be doing the same everyday. Those monsters stole that little boys life and I really hope they rot in hell!

I think the fact they stayed together as a couple for two years after Preston’s death through the house move and while the investigation was ongoing tells me everything I need to know about JFM’s guilt and complicitness.

Has it been confirmed if they are still together as a couple now?

Seeing the hospital admissions written out like that is mind blowing, how did his arm not raise an immediate red flag?! The prosecutor said "a part of the bone was caused to sheer off", how many here with children have had them have an arm fracture at that age? So infuriating it wasn't investigated further.
I've worked both in hospitals and the community, but I am not a doctor so may be wrong about this, however I believe that it takes comparatively (for the size of the bone) great force to break a child's arm or leg at this age - their bones and soft and bendy - usually they have to be twisted with some force to break them (obviously if I'm wrong, please correct me). I can't imagine the degree of force that would be required to "sheer off" a piece of bone.

The break alone should have had the police involved, surely, let alone the "sheering off".

To me this is like the way the McCanns got leeway when a couple from a tower block would have been put through the mill for leaving their children alone.

Taking the physical and sexual abuse out of it they were totally unsuitable to parent poor little Preston. Preston couldn’t sleep long due to his acid reflux, it must have been agony for him every time he was laid down, no bloody wonder he hardly slept and screamed a lot. You can’t leave someone with acid reflux laying down. the foster parents lovingly picked him up and soothed him, exactly what he needed to relieve the burning. The men never gave him a loving and caring home, my heart bleeds for him, and I can’t bear to think about the physical abuse, the emotional abuse is traumatic enough. RIP little man, you deserved so much more 😓

Hidden for those who don’t want to read, it was mentioned in court on 27/04 the reason the prosecution believe the picture is indecent and sexual abuse.

The picture of Preston deliberately positioned and photographed slumped over the bars of the cot whilst asleep show liquid dripping from his mouth. Forensic swabs taken from the bars of the cot examined, stains consistent with the presence of fluid containing saliva, the microscopic characteristics of a sperm cell and a mixed DNA result that could have originated from cells from Preston and Mr McGowan-Fazackerly were found on that swab.

The difference in the two interviews is staggering, the first one all soft spoken and contributing, I'd say he thought he'd give his false account and then police would disappear. He's extremely pissed off two years later when the whole thing hasn't gone away he's so passive aggressive rolling his eyes and yawning. Don't think I've ever seen such a narcissist, sick, demented pig in all my life
Doesn’t exactly scream innocence does it. He’s forgetting there’s a baby at the centre of all this that’s died one way or another. Most people would be distraught and would sit up straight and treat it all with a little respect. He thinks he’s being victimised here, the guy is an utter disgrace and a danger to society.

I can't read details. It's just too horrific. I hope that pair never see daylight outside a jail again. That is all.
I hope they get the Ian (Watkins and Huntley) treatment in prison. It’s no less than what they doled out to that precious wee boy

I was watching an American true crime thing recently. A 6 year old girl was molested by a neighbour at a pool party. He lured her into a bedroom, showed her indecent images of him and another child on his phone and SA’d her. She told her mum when she went home who reported it. His DNA was found on her body and also images on his devices. He got 60 years and will serve every single one. It should be mandatory full life sentences for those who inflict this horror on innocent children
