My eldest son was unwell with bronchitis when he was 7. He was fine. One evening he suddenly wasn’t. I called an ambulance who came out and assessed him as fine. A hour later, I was still worried so drove him to the hospital. Husband stayed at home with the other children. While driving him myself to the hospital (which I worked at) he went into respiratory arrest. This was his first ever hospital visit. Skip a long story short, I was Interrogated MULTIPLE times about how unusual his presentation and symptoms were. He was tubed and transferred to the Evelina. I travelled with him. When I got to the Evelina I was interrogated again and again, I was asked multiple times if I’d ’given him something’. For the first night, I wasn’t allowed to be with him unsupervised! I guess tests showed I hadn’t harmed him, as from then on I feel I was treated with more compassion and respect by the staff. It’s awful isn’t it but genuine parents with nothing to hide would be glad staff were doing their job once the upset had subsided. I was so upset in the hospital thinking I was being judged but thinking back now I’m glad they have a protocol. I just don’t understand how Blackpool hospital did nothing.
Not such a long story short, but my point is a first A&E visit in 7 years, and I was under instant suspicion about the severity of his symptoms. Anyway, he’s nearly 26 now, and his only other A&E visit was aged 11 when he went into anaphylactic shock on a school trip to the Eden project! I don’t think he’s seen a GP since then.
