But something I can’t get my head round is that she bathed him and changed his nappy. So how could she not notice his ‘abnormal bum’ or the bite mark?
Even if she did think his bum looked abnormal, never would she think that Preston had been sexually abused or grape.

A bruise on the buttock can be missed during a nappy change, and otherwise explained away as falling onto a toy cup (or whatever excuse they put forth). I just don’t think you’d necessarily recognise it as a bite, because it’s too strange to contemplate.

I just keep asking myself, if I was in that woman’s shoes, would I have been able to join the dots and work out that my own son was a horrific monster, and I don’t think I would.

Yes so far it feels like it’s JMF going ‘look! It was all him! I wasn’t even there! Why am I here?!?!?!’

We’ll see about that, soppycods.

Just finished the pod. The picture of his sore bum (sounds like massive understatement because I can’t type the reality) is on THE SAME day as the slumped over the cot bar photos. Of which there are 7! Over three minutes.

Hell really isn’t hot enough for these.

Did anyone else find it creepy that he sang ‘you’re gorgeous’ to him and called him ‘beautiful’? If it was anyone else you’d think nothing of it but it made me feel very uncomfortable.

I thought it icky, especially when you think of the lyrics and what the song is about 🤢 How bleeping apt.

I really hope that was emphasised to the jury because when it's put like that....

JMF barrister doing all she can to say he had no idea what was going on. I would think
It’s always better to go 2nd in a co conspirator situation as JV has to be supportive about JMF in the main as otherwise when JMF testifies he could really throw JV under the bus

I don’t think she had any suspicions of her son SA Preston.
But I do think she should have been concerned about the amount of bruises and injuries he had over a short period of time. Maybe she just put her head in the sand about it, or maybe she tried to ‘lead by example’ in her care of Preston.
Maybe she did question things, but believed every answer JV gave.
It’s all too late now anyway :(

Wouldn't they find fingerprints though or is that what they mean by dna... not clued up on this stuff like can they check for different things like saliva matching preston or swabs from mole. If it was fingerprints found then maybe explains if he had hold of it rather than them actually using it on him type of thing... urghhh cant believe my brains even going there 🤢
I’m behind so this might be answered already but my understanding is that it’s touch dna - skin cells etc which are transferable. So technically they could touch Preston, pick up some of his DNA and later transfer it to the toys

JV re a photo taken of Preston in the paddling pool showing his genitals with a comment made re his pen -

“It was supposed to be funny. John often had a conversation with a colleague that the ladies are going to be very lucky when he’s older”

Thats bleeping rank & disgusting. 🤢

Who ‘often’ chats to their colleagues about their baby’s private parts?! These sick creatures were obsessed.

That's so weird and definitely made up! If anyone commented on their babys genitals at work I'd immediately contact social services

But it wasn’t just a couple of bruises here and there, he was covered in them. I obviously don’t know what she was like as a person, or what their relationship was like (she could’ve been terrified of him for all we know) but I just don’t know how alarm bells weren’t ringing, and if they were, she should’ve done something about it. I know it’s not always that easy, something just doesn’t sit right with me that’s all.
Hard agree.

If this had been my son I would have spoken to him about out ("What the hell has happened to this baby? Why aren't you watching him properly? He shouldn't be knocking himself about on furniture like that!" and depending on the explanation (and I can't see any explanation that would explain the injuries to Preston's mole) I'd either teach him how to safely handle and protect a small child, or get in touch with the social worker. I love my son to bits, but I wouldn't let a child suffer because he was clumsy/inept/careless.

I think JV's mother may have been frightened of him, as others have already suggested.

Still no excuse.

A seven minute lull in phone activity, followed by video footage of Preston in respiratory distress? Doesn’t look good does it.
Blood, saliva, faeces, skin, hair (though not pubic hair from a baby Preston's age, obviously), mucous membrane tissue (eg from inside the mouth or mole).

‘You have never disclosed to John anything that could explain the evidence given by Dr Armour and Dr Gifford at the time of Preston’s death’, Ms Whyte says.

‘No because I don’t know how those injuries were caused. I would be speculating.’

‘It’s not that I don’t accept the cause of death. I don’t accept what has caused the hypoxia.’

Ms Whyte says John accepts the evidence that Mr Varley has done something to cause the restriction to Preston’s airway.

‘He doesn’t want to believe you are capable of that. The trust he has placed in you has been misplaced’, she says.

Mr Varley says it is easier for someone to accept it if they weren’t there.

‘If I thought that was down to me I would not have put John through this’, he says.

I think this is where it starts to not be as nicey towards each other...

Yeah I noticed that too, for those who can't see the live reporting, quoted below what was reported when NJ KC asked him how he felt now about Preston's death...

"I feel we have not been given time to grieve, I feel we are still looking for answers. I feel our pathologist is closer to what I experienced that day. I know their accusations and viewpoint is wrong. It couldn’t have been further from the truth. I'm lost for words."

Not sure what he means by 'closer to what I experienced that day' until I guess we hear from the pathologist.

The KC for JMF seems to definitely be pressing on that JV was alone with the child most of the time, and at the time of the incidents mentioned in her questioning so far, and that JMF is the less emotional (including anger and acting out I'm guessing is the angle) of the two.
I thought we'd already heard from both pathologists when the intital evidence was being presented? And they pretty much matched each other.

Apologies if I've got confused - I'm not the sharpest knife in the box.

We’ve heard from the prosecution pathologist. She confirmed the defence pathologist largely agrees with her but I don’t think the defence pathologist has testified yet

Interesting that they pretty much split up (I mean physically not relationship wise) straight after Preston died and stayed in separate houses. Were they still together after the event? I think JMF barrister has done a decent job there.
