27 years ago was what... 1993. I remember 1993 really well, I was in high school. It wasn’t the Victorian ages, although it wasn’t as open as it is now people generally didn’t care too much about homosexuality. A lad in the sixth form was openly gay, wore a denim jacket that said ‘ahoy sailor’ on it and told us that he’d had a liaison with Toby Anstis (another CBBC presenter of the day).

what I’m trying to say is it would have been awkward but not impossible for Phil to have come out before he was married. He was a theatre luvvie as Joseph around that time, I don’t think anyone would’ve been stunned, except his CORE FANBASE of housewives.

The only sentence I see in this is “ahoy sailer” I’m dying 🤣🤣🤣

WHAT THE HECK!!!

This is weird, no one cares if he’s gay but it’s just all weird. The way it’s been announced, the interview with Holly, Eamon and Ruth coming in.

Cannot deal with Phillip and Holly. He’s got his own agenda - frequently looks down his nose at guests and tries to make them look bad, whilst she’s giggling along. Absolutely mind numbingly boring. I adore eamon and Ruth. Eamon can be really rude (to Ruth, guests, other presenters etc) but in a very funny way - And I don’t see it as malicious - we all know an older bloke whose just stopped caring about what people think. They’re very genuine and I only watch TM when they’re on it. Since it was in the papers that Ruth complained about Philip, I haven’t seen her deny it anywhere and find that odd (unless I’ve missed it) so I’m thinking it’s true. It’d be easy enough to say it wasn’t true, after all...

I would love to know if all these "gushers" who are applauding him for his bravery would be gushing as much if it was their partner of 30 years coming out. Regardless what he says his wife must be truly broken. Knowing your life with your partner was a lie.

I worked with Melanie years ago. It was not a pleasant experience.
I used to drink in a pub she frequented in NottingHill years ago. She was vile. I remember one night her crying, as a group of men hadn’t paid her enough attention. She was screaming and crying about it to her mate, so odd.

I’m finding a lot of the comments on this thread quite hard to read. Whether you like Philip or not, coming out as gay at the age of 57 IS a brave thing to do. Homophobia is sadly still rife, even in this day and age. I know, first hand, the effects of keeping a ‘secret’ like this can do to someone. It eats away, slowly chipping away at you until it takes you to the brink. But telling the truth and being who you truly are is sometimes too much for some people, largely due to the reactions of others. Some comments saying ‘oh he’ll be on dancing on ice next year’ and ‘ Philip and Rylan will be best mates etc’ WHY???? because he’s gay??? FFS this narrow minded ignorance is why people find it so hard to be honest. And has anyone thought maybe he’s difficult to work with because he’s been carrying this for years?
1, I couldn’t care less that he is gay,
2, obviously for some its a hard thing to deal with but a lot of people carry things inside but they are not pricks with it to colleagues etc

i don’t want to sound mean but why the big performance about coming out, it’s nobody’s business but his and his family
neither mark foster nor Luke Evans seemed to have the need to do this

God, I hope none of you ever have to go through coming out. The comments here are absolutely awful. It must have been heartbreaking to realise that you're living a life you're not meant to. Also, love is more than about who you're currently kissing so I do not think that his wife has been living a "wasted life" you all need to realise what it's like for homosexual people to admit their truths. No wonder so many people stay in the closet when comments like these ones are being made.
No, I don't think the comments are about coming out, they are about him specifically. No one is saying coming to terms with one's sexuality is an easy ride its just that he's being fake about it. The timing, the interview, the open secret, the feuds... its all too convenient. Imo anyway.

I don't watch very often anymore but I did like Phil and Holly. I think all of this going on will push them to leave now (maybe not immediately but in the near future).
My hope would be for Rylan and Alison to present it, love them both
Rylan is fantastic ; warm, witty and a tv natural .

So is the problem between pip and Ruth magically forgotten about now? Wtf!
Yes as if Ruth had anything bad to say about Phillip going forward then she could be classed as being Homophobic - mad i know but that's what'll happen.

Possibly interesting timing but I can honestly say watching him and Ruth interact this morning after they all came together for a few moments I don't think any of them were faking that emotion. She wasnt just hugging him she held him. Fair play Phil
I thought this too. She conducted herself with absolute professionalism and compassion. I wanted to hug her too. Maybe it suddenly all
made sense to her

I don’t think anyone is saying this is a stunt and he isn’t gay. People are questioning his timing with all his bad press recently. Just seems too convenient.
Exactly.
I don't think anyone thinks that or has been homophobic. It's clearly a difficult thing for anyone to do but it also seems like rather than address the issues that have been coming to light more and more around his behaviour he has used this like a 'get out of jail free' card to sweep the drama under the carpet.
If anything I think it trivialises it for people who are genuinely struggling.

Call me a cynic but it feels kind of convenient that this is when he chooses to make his announcement as talk has been heating up about him bullying people. It's the perfect distraction.

(I do feel for anyone who is genuinely conflicted by a similar issue or doesn't feel they can be open about it but I'd hate to think someone was using this sort of situation for their own gains)

Yes!!!!

And all the "Well, my friend's uncle's cousin's best friend used to work on *whichever tv show* and they said that he was shagging..."
Whatever. Unless you saw it with your own eyes, it's as good as crap. 🙄

MM has deleted his Twitter and YouTube now, all this coming out on social media the day after PS doing his big coming out speech and interview , seems to be like it's a huge PR exercise , everything just seems so odd, why not separate from your wife, then do it. I honestly didn't know he had a wife but I'm not into daytime TV and don't watch it. But I do love a bit of a scandal, and that's exactly what this is turning into. Not bothered if he's gay at all, but if he's been sleeping with underage men behind her back while having a wholesome family image to the nation then I think it's awful.
