Goodness me the fawning over this guy!!! He's not dead or dying, he's gay. That is all. Why should we sympathise with him? He's led a life based on a lie and I'm sure he'll milk this for all its worth. I feel sorry for his wife and kids but they too will be fine. Being gay is actually no big deal any more, the big deal is him not coming clean for 27 years.

But, in all seriousness, I think it stems back to an interview Rylan gave or a comment he made (I'll have to try and find the source) where he said something about some people in Showbiz not being as nice as you think and everyone jumped to the conclusion that he was talking about PS. And I think he works on This Morning anymore, certainly not when PS & HW are on (I only watch now and again so not 100% sure)

He is also incredibly close to Ruth and Eamonn. When Ruth's sister took her own life last year, Eamonn said Rylan was the first person she called and he sat with Eamonn when he made the announcement that Ruth would be off for a while. It was obvious then what good friends they are. It was very touching. Feel emotional just thinking about it actually.

considering he started out on that godawful katie price program, rylan has turned into a national fvcking treasure. he's great on the radio and seems like a genuinely great guy. unlike schofe. i am sad if this is ps's 'excuse' for being a total cvnt for years. many people struggle with their sexuality and turn to kindness.

I hadn’t realised that a presenter on radio 1 Jameela Jamil came out on Wednesday, seemingly she’s wasn’t brave like Philip instead got a bit of a rough ride. For me, I’ve been left wondering about him since he started doing adverts for We Buy Any Car, it just seemed such an odd pairing, like he was just doing it for money, nothing else. At least when Holly does adverts for L’Oréal or whatever, you can see there is a obvious connection that makes it a good pair, but Phillip and We Buy Any Car is such a terrible match it was clearly a money grabbing effort from Phillip.

What else is it then? No doubt he loved his wife as a friend and mother to his children, just not as a wife. He went into a relationship lying, and continued to lie for decades, and now has had no thought to her dignity, by making the narrative all about how brave he is. He could have divorced his wife first, then made an interview saying he loved the time spent together and the kids, but it was wrong to marry a woman, and at the time he felt unable to be himself. Are you going to give a clap on the back to every gay man who chooses to marry a woman because they are insecure, or because a het marriage "gives them something" like status or bio children? Sorry, but it seems like when stories like this happen, the wives just either get ignored, or else have to show how supportive they are, no consideration to how they feel about being used, lied to, or even cheated on.

I have more of an idea what it's like to deal with your sexuality than most of the people on here, to be honest.

He wasn't a teenager when he choose to marry a woman, nor was he facing anymore legal or societal pressures of that era, funny enough the majority of gay men or women didn't marry the opposite sex and keep up the farce for decades. He was an adult at that time, and should have taken responsibility for his own insecurities about being gay, rather than drag and dupe a woman into them. Different story if they both agreed this was a marriage for "face", but apparently it wasn't. How can you degrade her with all this media attention too, rather than let the divorce settle and allow her to have her privacy, instead of making her say how supportive she is of being treated so poorly.

To which Phillip awkwardly responded: 'I'm not,' with Eamonn adding: 'It's fantastic you have spoken. We are all here by your side. We will be the first to stand beside you. It's brilliant, mate, as long as Steph and the girls are happy.'

Eamonn went on to joke that he was told the television star would be making an announcement and he thought he would be resigning so he could get his job.

He quipped: 'I am disappointed in a couple of ways, first of all, I thought "big announcement from Phillip" I thought you were going to come in and announce you had resigned and I would take you job, so that wasn't to be.


He added: 'The second is there's this great imponderable in life, which has always irritated me, I thought, "How come he can sit in a hot tub with Holly Willoughbooby and Steph doesn't have a problem and Dan [Holly's husband] doesn't have a problem."

'I thought, she [pointing to wife Ruth] would have a problem, I thought "no, no".

Phil was quick to change the subject, as he added: 'This [Holly] is the sister I never had,' with Holly adding: 'We are very lucky, very blessed.'

You can tell Scofe is a diva, so I'm not surprised by what I've read the past few days.

I love Eamon and Ruth, and much prefer when they're presenting. Ruth especially is fantastic.

Holly asked if he was forced to come out, why would you ask this of this wasn’t an element.

I could give two hoots if he’s gay but from his carry on I thought he was dying. Way too dramatic.

I wasn't planning to throw my hat in this ring but...

This was a marriage of convenience for the both of them, as she was his manager and this helped keep his career on track. It's perfectly possible for him to be gay and still have wanted children, so they both agreed to have them together. It seems (given the number of years they were together) that they were good companions in every other way, so it's a win-win for them both to have this marriage run and have dalliances on the side that they both agreed to (it explains him saying there were no secrets between him and his wife).

As for him acting during that interview, I'm not sure. It's one thing to have industry insiders and friends knowing you're gay, but it's entirely different to come out to a TV audience of millions. There's a risk This Morning would lose viewers or get backlash if this was taken as something that didn't align with 'family values'. As others have said, we are in 2020 but many people still don't understand. I can imagine he was legitimately nervous.

Also, I do think he's come out now because he has been pressured to. Not due to blackmail or his wife wanting to publicly move on with another man, or a scandalous story from the Sunday papers about to be run...but by ITV themselves. All the negative news around him of late has created a lot of chatter around ITV's choice of hosts! You need only look at the early posts in this thread to see how many people were saying the lineup needs a shake-up and all these arrogant pricks should be fired. ITV bosses would have told him they can't take any more negative press with all the rumors around his Diva antics, and this would be a great PR exercise to silence those speaking out against PS. Then there's the added bonus of showing all his ITV 'family' rallying around and therefore reinforcing the image of this being one big happy family, further quashing all the rumors of problems between them.
It is a genius move to deflect from the negative press but I give credit to the ITV higher-ups who came up with this idea, not PS himself.

Maybe Dec will look at this for inspiration and decide to go next........?
