The Newson clinic is under a lot of scrutiny at the moment, rightly or wrongly. There has been some talk on other groups that since the panorama programme women who went to Newson clinic and then to the GP to be prescribed are being called in for reviews and having their prescriptions changed. If you’re on FB there’s a group called Totes Meri Peri and there’s lots of good advice on there including what to say to your GP to get them to actually take notice. Balance app is another good one as has a symptom tracker so you can go into an appointment with it in black and white which sometimes has more effect.
My surgery has a menopause specialist who also has a private practice and website My Menopause Centre which might be helpful for you. I hope you get someone that listens to you.

It was a nurse I spoke to. She was awful with me. She listened about the physical symptoms, cycle irregularities, my mood swings, rage, anger, anxiety, ocd and depression. She was dismissive right away and said oh I see on the system you’ve not had a full blood count in 5 years
I explained I struggle with blood tests due to medical trauma and unless absolutely necessary my gp never forces them on me. She asked what happened and why, digging up past trauma. She was so cold and rude.

She also said ‘ well although you’ve had short then long cycles your last 4 have been back to regular so it may not be peri’ I told her I’d had regular 28-30 all my life, day 18-21 isn’t me, nor is 44/55 so yes I get some regular ones thrown in for a while. Ht the crazy ones are thr months I don’t ovulate. I’m very in tune with my body and know what’s happening.

She said ‘well unless you’re willing to do a face we won’t prescribe hrt.’ I said ‘but what has a general blood test got to do with hrt?‘ And she said ‘ it could be something far more sisnister going on causing your symptoms’. I said ‘what, mood swings that are hormonal? Hormonal anxiety? Itchy ears? Forgetfulness?… like what exactly?’ She said ‘I don’t know I’m not a doctor.‘😂, I gave up at that point and said ok that’s fine. She then said ‘hrt wouldn’t help you anyway, it’s for physical symptoms, it won’t help the emotional mental health side of things. You’re not having hot flushes so it’s pointless to start hrt‘. just waved the white flag and said goodbye.
I’d actually complain to the practice manager and suggest they send all their staff on up to date course on menopause and perimenopause. It’s not like it’s not been plastered all over media, instagram etc for the last few years. I know more than that nurse!

No blood test needed for hormones as not accurate though i do agree it’s worth ruling out other things/ensuring our bloods are ok as we age. (Completely understand the issues around trauma)

Louise Newsomes clinic isn’t the only one out there. Lots of local private hospitals running them. I’ve always said if i want to try HRT and i come against resistance i would pay to go to a menopause clinic, i’m not there yet though my symptoms are manageable for now.

I had a similar issue recently and was told I had to have blood tests before they would prescribe HRT, even though I'm 49. I did them, all was fine, I got my HRT. But given you have a very good reason for not wanting blood tests, you could refer them to the NICE guidelines which are that over the age of 45 HRT should be prescribed on symptoms alone.

This is appalling

I’m so angry on your behalf. The lack of education is so frustrating.
Stick to your guns and try somebody else at the practice. I appreciate you don’t want more blood tests but would you be prepared to have them done as a compromise to rule out other deficiencies. Tbh I had them done to rule out thyroid and iron levels as I was struggling with exhaustion, tests came back fine and I was still brushed off but at least it would be ruled out.
Good luck and in a non patronising way - well done to husband for being supportive, Not all of them are

Does anyone get cold sores every month? 😡
I used to! It’s because your immune system is weaker at that time in your cycle. Get a prescription from the GP for Aciclovir (same ingredient in Zovirax but at a level that actually works). Take it for a few days around your low point and it will prevent the virus from breaking out. 800mg five times a day for a few days changed things for me.

ETA you can also try L-Lysine supplements which help a little. Eat more dairy esp yoghurt and avoid nuts (and other foods that can trigger the virus, loads of lists online)

Not sure if this has been mentioned here before but I found this checklist invaluable. After being dismissed as suffering from mental health I went away and found this. Being able to document the numerous physical symptoms I was suffering backed up my concerns that it was menopause related. Yes I was probably a little anxious but this was a side effect not the root cause for example.
This website also has a lot of other good info

The balance app is also good for recording symptoms

I'm definitely gaining weight around my tummy and hips since being on continuous hrt. It's working so well but I'm morbidly obese already. Part of me is thinking I'm nearly 50 and I'm close to accepting myself as big so tempted to just think sod it and buy a bigger size clothes 😩

Does anyone else get extreme tiredness around their periods? I know that increased fatigue is normal-ish. but sometimes I can't function due to the brain fog/exhaustion.

Thank god you guys mentioned that dizziness is a peri thing. It started 3 weeks ago and I’ve managed to convince myself I’ve got a brain tumour. 🤦‍♀️
Anyway - I’m going to finally pull my finger out and see my GP about HRT.

I've got a phone call soon to discuss contraception and vaginal estrogen. I've been toying with the idea of a mirena, and I enquired if I could get one fitted when I'm in for mu smear , which is due. My practice don't fit them , and I'd have to make an appointment at North Tyneside hospital at because that's where we have to go. So that would probably be a while before that would happen anyway.

I had some minipill left from last time I tried them so I started taking them when my period started. I'm going to ask for more of that and preserver with that for longer. I was going to discuss the combined pill as I was on that for years , but I've read it isn't advisable if you've ever had migraines with I have. The anxiety of getting migraines again would be too much .

Hi all, this is a rather crappy stage of womanhood, isn't it?! Has anyone found any good products for thinning hair? A shampoo that might help? And I guess it's a good time for me to go much shorter with my hair length now too?

I’ve been the same. Pretty much constant dizziness for months now, and headaches.

Has anyone experienced more sensitive teeth and gums? I definitely have these last disc months. I’ve had sensitivity in the past but not on the regular. It seems constant. It could just be down to ageing and getting longer in the tooth which is kind of inevitable I suppose.

Watermans shampoo and conditioner is fab. They have a website. Small family firm. Really recommend it for fine thinning hair x
