I will have had my Mirena coil in for 5 years this November. I was told at the time it would be in for 5 years. My friend said leave it in, why take it out! I am going to speak to my doctor, rather than take my friends advice, who is not not a doctor! Has anyone else left theirs in? Thanks.

It’s awful isn’t it? It’s like you’re an over inflated balloon that needs to pop and let everything out - physically and emotionally! I came on later on the same day I posted thankfully, although I’m already dreading the next PMS phase. I hope you get some relief soon x
Oh I’m glad. Thank you. It really is the pits. That’s why I love reading here I feel less insane x

I have left mine in and wonder if this is why I have very mild to no peri menopause symptoms and I am coming up to the end of my 40’s. I wouldn’t have thought anything of it but my younger sister has been going through PM since they were 42 and mentioned it to me. Only then did I realise I must be as well.

Thank you. I had late night sweats etc but no symptoms since the coil...

MIne's been in since 2013.

Waking up and as soon as your eyes open you’ve surging anxiety. The last few days over ovulation have been brutal. I’ve had anxiety all my life but this is just horrible. I just needed to let that out, I’ve been crying since 7am. Waking up feeling this surging adrenaline for no damn reason is so hard. 🥲🥲🥲

I haven’t yet had hot flushes or night sweats, I’ve had cycles getting shorter over the last 2 years, then back to normal, then this year long cycles 45-55 days, then back to normal like they are now. Anxiety and depression this year, I feel totally lost in my head. Lost my umph for my hobbies and anything I enjoy. I feel isolated and alone. I’ve no Mum to talk to about this as we don’t have a close relationship, I tried to talk to her but she said basically suck it up.

My gp only let you do online econsult and I got told you’re 44 we don’t give treatment and it won’t be peri at my age despite telling them I’ve had pain, anxiety, depression, fatigue, cycles all over the place, crippling anxiety at ovulation, sleep issues…Is it worth taking HRT once I’m 45 if my cycles currently have settled again? For now. Should I wait out until the hot flushes start and haywire cycles kick in again?

Oh hell that sounds hard. Anxiety is the bloody pits I know. This 45 cut off is such bloody balls - is there any one good at your practise you could talk to or any chance for a private consultation. HRT isn’t always the magic cure but it sounds like you’re peri from your symptoms and you should be able to try it.

Hi ladies. I can recommend a really good website called Menopause Matters Forum…it is full of info and members issues and symptoms, just like this section but with a lot more in depth advice and was set up by a Dr.

Obviously check with your own GP, but I've had latest one in 5 years and when I rang my GP surgery to make an appointment to get it changed, the doctor rang me back and said that the Mirena coil is now approved to be left in (and remaining effective) for 8-10 years. I asked her several times was that absolutely definite, and she said yes. I live in Ireland so I can't say whether it is only approved in Ireland for that long or not. Other countries could be different. She said to contact her again if I find I'm having problems. She said the hormone diminishes in it gradually, but the physical barrier effect doesn't.

I love the Mirena coil. Haven't had a period since 2009, beyond occasional spotting. I honestly think it's saving me from the worst physical effects of the menopause, although I'm not escaping unscathed by any means - weight gain and mood and brain fog and hot flushes are horrible. But my mother had terrible haemorrhaging during her menopause and I'm glad I at least don't have that.

Would love to go on HRT but I would not be approved for it due to my blood pressure, heart, and other ailments. Shame, as I feel it would make a real difference.

You can get hrt from Superdrug online. You’d have to pay but if you can’t get anywhere with gp it might be worth it. I’m sure they’re not following guidelines though. I think I definitely had peri symptoms from at least 42. I wish I’d realised sooner and asked.
Eta rescue remedy pastilles are surprisingly helpful. Manuka oil and neroli oil are also good, and gaba supplements, and theanine.

So sorry you are going through that. I’d recommend asking your GP for a referral to a Gynaecologist. They’ll know more and should accept that it’s likely to be peri.

I hope you feel better soon. Maybe try and ‘shake out’ the adrenaline? We have nowhere to really put our animal-instinct anxieties in modern life. Animals tremble to get rid of theirs. Try letting totally loose to a song that moves you for 3 minutes, it sometimes works for me! Xx

They can be left for 10 years as I have one of those. Just been a little longer than 10 years.
Anyone have info on PMDD what’s the difference between this and peri and symptoms seem so similar.

I’m close to giving up on the patches to be honest. Has been two weeks and no sleep improvement, mode improvement etc. I feel bloated, and the patches are giving me rashes and so itchy - in fact my skin everywhere is itchy. I’m due to change to the next lot tomorrow and I have read they can make you feel really down so dreading that. Tempted just to stop but maybe I’m impatient.

Where are you putting them? I ask because they apparently work better on skin with some large. To give some hope my history with progesterone has not been good but the patches are tolerable. I do bloat a bit more but it’s better than the night sweats for me.
I initially use the patches on the front of my hip and thigh - one side got rashes more than the other but since sticking to my bum only, it’s all good. They stay on better too.

I had a bad reaction to the 50mg patches. I only last the 2 weeks. I was given 25mg to try but my period has gone awol.

I have been using them on my thigh, the thickest part, as I read that could help but it hasn’t. As well of the site of where the patch is/has been is red and itchy, the skin all over my body is so, so itchy since using them.

Maybe I should ask for 25mg and see if that helps the reaction. It’s so frustrating that just when you get started hoping to improve peri symptoms, HRT side effects pop up!

You could cut one in half and see, save the prescription effort

Hi ladies, been directed here from ptwm page, relieved I'm not alone but sorry at the same time that so many of us are in the same boat.

I'm at the end of my rope with my GP who seems to be cut from the same cloth as some of yours from what I've read.
I told the Dr last week that I can't carry on like this. It's my 3rd time of going back about the same thing. I'm up all night itching my hands and feet, having difficulty swallowing, periods have got closer together and so much heavier. On top of that the pmt rage/sadness/anxiety and panic attacks is too much to cope with.
His response was that as I have pcos and thyroid issue, they are all the same symptoms. Won't do a thing to help other than prescribe antihistamine tablets and tell me to apply emollient 4 times a day 💩
Been recommended the balance app so going to give that a go and see if I can make my case with a bit more evidence from that. Not even sure I want hrt as I know it's not a golden bullet but feel so helpless 😔
Thanks for reading xx
