I always thought he was but having just googled him he had to give it up age 14 when he was diagnosed with anaemia.
However, I do enjoy his commentary and think he’s a good presenter and if Claire Balding can commentate on tennis having never played it then at least Matt has some gymnastic experience!
That’s very true about Claire Balding. I find Matt annoying but his commentary wasn’t too bad. And it’s a plus he has the experience so knows what the athletes are going through.

This does worry me - I saw a fight between a trans woman and a woman and it was so brutal. The trans woman was just attacking her opponent. I hope who ever competes against Imane Khelif and Lin Yu‑ting are strong enough.
I understand Clare is divisive- maybe just over exposed - but she does at least have a little depth when she’s talking, she preps. Some of the couch dwellers strike me as Just Saying Words. Seem like they’re on the verge of stumbling. Straining somewhat.
I like Clare. She’s a presenter who explains what’s going on and seems a fan like the rest of us asking the questions to the experts we were all wondering about. I think she’d be a laugh down the pub too
She is probably one of the hardest working sports presenters because she does the prep, so she does know what she is saying. But she is so overexposed and just kinda boring as a presenter. Her hard work and knowledge she has from her prep kinda masks a lack of charisma and screen presence. She's just sort of there. I don't dislike her, but she's not memorable for me.
Yeah I like that about her, that she knows what she’s talking about. I have to mute a lot of the others. I mute a lot of the filling tbh.
Not buying all these athletes saying their toddlers told them to go compete at the Olympics sorry x
I met Clare Balding briefly at the UCI world champs in Glasgow last year when I was working at the velodrome. She was very friendly and also always made sure she had the most up to date results or schedules so she was prepared for what was coming up. She came in to our media hub one night looking for a space to work and was perfectly content to just grab a random chair and sit at the side on her laptop - didn’t want to disturb any of the other journalists or photographers at the desks by asking if she could sit down, just was happy to sit on a random chair in the corner and do her stuff. Pretty sure my managers would have bent over backwards to find her a quiet space but she was totally happy to just squeeze in anywhere. Didn’t expect special treatment or anything which I thought she might have done.
Tom Daly’s son would have been 5 when he said it so not quite a toddler!
I remember Andy Murray saying he wanted to play long enough so that his kids could see him play, which some of them did but then he said none of them were really interested in him playing!
I can see how parents want their kids to see them competing though.
let’s be honest toddlers are holes - they are doing it to get out of the way
It’s okay to be honest about being a bit selfish though
It just feels like a lot of them say it because it’s cute and because they know they sacrificed time away from their kids to train for the Olympics
