Owen Jones

OJ should have someone walk infront of him waving a little red flag, like they did in the old days when automobiles were first invented, then everyone would know to keep well clear of the c/nt.

Owen Jones has been massively called out because of a Vice article and seems to just be studiously avoiding the topic despite being constantly on twitter.

The background is that 2 occasional writers for the Guardian (not employees) both trans men have decided to no longer write for the Guardian because of this article written in the Observer about the Allison Bailey case and how its not bigoted for a lesbian to not want to sleep with someone with a penis. The 2 trans men wrote and open letter to the Guardian saying that they were not going to do the articles they had been commissioned to write for the pride issue and would not be working for them going forward either due to the Guardian's “ingrained prejudice against trans women” , this open letter was covered in Vice by Ben Hunte.

Ben Hunte then tweeted out the article with the quote "The journalists are calling for other LGBTQ writers - and allies - to cut ties with the paper until things change... “If you call yourself a trans ally, this is the moment for you to do something."
Everyone knows hes subtweeting Owen Jones who has just ignored it all not even commenting on the 2 trans men freelancers boycotting the paper.

Now the question is will Owen Jones quit his cushy Guardian job to be on the right side of history or will he just pretend like nothings happening?

Am I reading that right that those two journalists who have trans articles commissioned by the Guardian have thrown their toys out of the pram because the Guardian also publishes articles with views that they oppose? 🤷‍♀️ And they’d also like other LGB journalists to follow them out of the door? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Yup

As well as flouncing and wanting others to quit too, this is what they want the Guardian to do:
"McConnell and Parsons list several demands within their letter. They want the Guardian to change its editorial approach to trans people, asking bosses to prioritise the lived experiences of trans people over “paying writers who are not trans to express uninformed opinions”. They also ask for a change in the newspaper’s editorial stance to reflect that trans women having rights does not disadvantage cis women."

How do they think of themselves as journalists? 🤦‍♀️

Well indeed. How can a journalist believe that oblg one perspective on an issue should ever be reported or debated?

Though the idea that The Guardian has an anti-trans bias is the funniest thing I have heard so far this year! I wonder how The Grauniad feels to finally be on the receiving end of the typical TRA ‘no actions are ever good enough or valid unless we deem them so/no debate’ backlash? 😄

I'm sure the schadenfreude of being caught up in this isn't lost on Owen. I don't like him, but he certainly has more intelligence and credibility than the likes of Freddie "my gender dysphoria is so severe I've given birth twice" McConnell, who couldn't produce a coherent thought if they tried.

Can you imagine what OJ would be saying if it was someone else being told to quit their job to prove their allyship, he'd be all over it.

I always wonder about people like McConnell and the other person, are they that well off that they can refuse work? Surely you're limiting yourself to a tiny pool of employers if you want to keep being a journalist and even if you branch outside of journalism a fair portion of employers wouldn't hire someone seen to be "difficult"

People like Owen are actors ... 'journalist' is just the role they are playing. I've met people like him and that's the only way I can describe it. It's quite disturbing when you actually start scratching the surface of person like that. Yes, we all 'act' to a certain degree in life ... but it isn't pathological like it is with Owen et al. You see these types of people all over broadcast media, they really have no true ideology or political stance they just have an almost desperate need to be 'seen' and 'heard', presumably in order to validate their existence. I really don't know.

Performative activists. We seem to be overrun by them.

Have they definitely broken up? I saw the Pink News Awards rumbling but unfollowed OJ on Twitter because he annoyed me so much. Has he publicly confirmed?

Jack Monroe was at the Pink News awards earlier this week (nominated, but didn’t win) however the livestream showed little OJ (afaik, not a murderer) having a right old falling out with someone on his table. Hence the interest in this thread. He’s a recurring guest character in the Monroeverse

He certainly seems to be insinuating they have with these tweets. Then again, he's a shady little shite so who knows

Oh bless him. Owen my heart bleeds for you. Your flat is in London I presume so you will get a good price for it. Maybe not the price you think it deserves. But surely the overinflation of asset prices as a result of loose monetary policy since 2008, pricing working people out of decent housing in the capital, is something that you as a socialist should be strongly opposed to, no? So embrace that negative equity, Owensy! It’s a sign that you’re on the RiGhT sIdE oF HiStOrY
