Only got to read the OP; but that thread just was..weird. I mean, how was the neighbour to know that the baby hadn't meant their grandparent(s)?
It had nothing to do with that and everything to do with the fact that the neighbour is attractive and the OP is a bit put out she gets on with her husband and the OP probably feels a bit exhausted and not great in herself. That's my theory anyway

That husband is going to have a lot of hassle in the future judging by that story.

I rarely find threads about newborns strange, as they seem to be an unusual group when it comes to new babies and the post-natal time.

Every thread starting 'I'm about to give birth and I want to insist on no visitors for 1/2/20 weeks/months/years, is met with 'you are totally within your rights, this is normal'

Usual phrases - you need to establish breastfeeding, your/our little family, get used to being a family of 3,4,5, want to have boobs out, still bleeding etc

I have never known any group be so intense about this, and to think no one should be allowed to see, hold or visit new babies. *Obviously I respect if people are the Mum/Dad it is their decision, I just mean I've never known such intense fuss about it and the reasons why*

I’m not a parent so I can’t come at it from that perspective but as someone with babies/children in my life, when the baby was born, everyone was invited to meet it really soon, sometimes in the hospital or sometimes the next day. The parents wanted to ‘show off’ the baby and visitors could hold the baby while the parents did other stuff, or makes cups of tea and stuff like that. Reading those threads on MN was like entering a parallel universe where people wanted six weeks alone with their baby!

Completely agree. I wanted to see friends after I had my babies (two traumatic deliveries, two easy) and was glad of an extra pair of hands. Those MN weirdos insisting on being ‘our little family’ for a year after the birth or whatever struck me as insane. We were desperate for company and signs of the outside world!

Also yes mega lolz at ‘DCats’. Mental.

I relate to this totally! Never been told anyone wants a specific amount of time alone or anything other than a visit would be nice!

It is such an MN thing to make a fuss of ‘our little family’ and I also always find it strange!

I find the newborn threads where no one is allowed to hold the baby weird and a little sad. It's never been the done thing in my family - everyone has pretty much got on with it afterwards, people have made cups of tea for visitors.

When my eldest niece was born, the grandparents visited in hospital as soon as visiting time started and my niece was guest of honour at my parents' wedding anniversary when she was 7 weeks old. I think everyone at the party who wanted to - got to cuddle her.

They also hate spending time with their extended families on Mumsnet - especially their poor MILS.

Agreed. I also hate when posters pile on 'oh OP, you will be bleeding from every orifice, your boobs will fall off...you cannot allow anyone past the front door'.

I invented some of the above 😂 but I do feel for any expectant woman, being frightened by the horrible picture they paint.
Also, everyone who comes to visit - usually the dreaded parents in law - stays for six months, expects to have attendance danced upon them and five course meals prepared from scratch daily. Of course.

I don't have kids. But anytime I have visited family or friends after a new baby is born, I have gladly done anything I can, even if it's only making tea, or holding the baby while the mother has a shower or something. I don't invite myself along but the new parents have always been dying to show off the newborn.

I have to agree about the MIL bit 😂

I don’t understand the still bleeding excuse. Do these people not go out when they’re on their periods?!

They are continually wanting to complain about something/someone. The doctor, the teacher, the shop assistant, ‘the check out girl asked how I was, AIBU to say it’s none of her business how I am, should I complain to the manager?’ ‘Oh definitely! She was completely in the wrong! I’d report her!’ They are all so up themselves! 😂😂

There are certain topics that the trolls know will get things going. And tbh I think it's mostly trolls on there now.

'How often do you wash...I get up every twenty minutes at night for a shower, and to change the bed. Anything else is just manky. Etc.'
