One time when I'd only recently moved into this house I opened the door to two Jehovah's Witnesses who immediately started speaking Portuguese at me. It took a few seconds of me staring at them in total incomprehension before they realised the previous tenants had moved out and I didn’t have a clue who they were or what they were saying, at which point they apologised, explained and left. Wonder what your average MNer would've made of that experience :ROFLMAO:
You mean you answered the door???? Are you on GLUE??

She’s absolutely right. The only reason large kids are more visible is more photos are taken, in my opinion. There have always been large kids, thin kids and average sized kids. It’s not an obesity epidemic, it’s a camera phone epidemic.

All the above typed whilst eating a Snickers.
She's not right. There's plenty of data available to prove that obesity, including childhood obesity has increased over the last 30-40 years.
I have an old school class photo from the early '70s and every single person including the teacher is thin.
Right through senior school, every single girl was a size 10-14 (which was tiny then. A 14 = a 10 now). They didn't even make school uniform bigger than size 14.
Yes, you would see the ocassional larger kid, but they would be the exception.

Why do people do AMAs if they're just gonna duck off for a few hours, answer two questions, and then flounce because someone was slightly crappy with them?

They do it to up their engagement numbers, and then flog out an ad a couple of weeks later.

So predictable

I went to a all girls convent in the 70s and a photo shows a variety of sizes, some slim, some not so, some well covered and occasionally some larger build. We didn't have access to junk food on the scale seen now, in fact only Wimpy existed as a burger bar and apart from the sweet shop it was 3 meals a day.

Is a 70s size 14 really a size 10 now??? Wow.
Yes, I’d agree with that. I remember going to a vintage shop where they had some overalls in size 14 and it was teeny, tiny. I do think we’re on the larger side these days, but not always in a bad way. I think there are far more taller girls about, which is probably down to better nutrition although I’m just guessing here but I don’t always think it’s down to ‘large’. Even some of the old male soldiers uniforms I saw in Edinburgh castle look like the wearers were very thin and on the short side. I also think we live a more sedentary lifestyle than we used to which might play into it. More desk jobs and people will drive miles to use a gym instead of walking places. My mum was very thin in the 70’s but she admits she ate next to nothing, partly because she wanted to keep her figure and partly because the food wasn’t available in the amounts it is today.

(Just FYI, I’m not one of the MN ‘everyone is SO large these days and we’ve lost sight of normal body weights’ posters but I do think it’s an interesting discussion but it’s not balanced on MN. All you tend to get is ‘just eat less, and move more!’ as though it’s that easy (it’s not). A lot of people back then were very underweight because of poverty, which has escaped some of the MNers)

I mentioned this before, but I started a thread on MN when some people knocked on my door asking if any deaf people lived at my address or there were any other deaf people on the street (I was wondering if it was a scam I wasn’t aware of) and got loads of replies telling me not to answer the door if I was scared and to log it with 101 🤨

Luckily, that absolutely terrifying experience of opening the door to strangers in broad daylight hasn’t put me off and I still answer the door to this day even when I don’t know who might be behind it! 😮
I used to just open the front door without a second thought until I watched 24 Hours in Police Custody where someone had pretended to be a delivery driver and broke in, attacked the women in the house and left - he didn’t steal anything, he didn’t know his victims.

It’s not a Mumsnet hide in the corner type person and open the door to no one. I’m just a bit more vigilant now, as in I’ll make a note of what deliveries I’m expecting and check the time frame once I get an email/text.

Even if we are 1000x fatter now than people were in the 70s, why do they expect me to care? What business is it of mine if you were a size -3 in 1974 and ate 1 meal a day? It doesn’t affect me in the slightest lol

Is anyone reading the AMA I have 11 kids thread? I'm conflicted - is she a fantasist or genuine? 11 kids, full time job, breast feeding 3 month old twins, has 1:1 time with each individual child on a daily basis, it all sounds a bit Little House on the Prairie to be true.

Looks like bull. How has she got time to be arguing online with 11 kids including 3 month old twins? Also curious how a photo of a woman with 11 children and offering up a payslip is enough for MN to go “yeah, you’re genuine, crack on”. I know someone with 8 kids, I could take a photo of her with them off her FB to email to MN, doesn’t make me a mother of 8.

I don't understand why she submitted a payslip to them. To prove she's an NHS nurse? That's probably the only thing that's true about the whole story. Her life sounds a bit dull if it is true - washing, housework, childcare, work, sleep - where's the fun? Where are the days out and holidays? Oh, of course, they go wild camping in Scotland - the kids must love that, especially the teenagers, the ones whose mates are jetting off to Disneyland and getting sunburnt on European beaches :D

I think she's a bored mum of maybe 2 - 3 children, on maternity leave, no friends to talk to, so she's made up this idyllic family life filled with cherubic toddlers, angelic children and well-behaved teens, all snuggled together in a big rambling house that is filled with joy and laughter.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

She’s probably watched too many episodes of 22 kids and counting and wants to have as many kids as that grotty Sue Radford when in reality she’s a single mum of 1.

I’ve only skim read the thread. Is she actually a nurse? Only she has an 18 year old, she’s in her late 30s…when did she train to be a nurse between having 11 kids?

I don’t care how good your time management is, nobody, nobody, can give 11 kids the nurturing, emotional support or attention that they need.

People having 11 kids in a first world nation with adequate contraception are either attention seeking, clout chasing (e.g in a religious community) or mentally ill.

She trained 14 years ago. She has a 15,14,13 and 12yo so it must have been tricky juggling placements and uni with multiple pregnancies and newborn babies all over the place.

I just read that. My parents went through that with my grandparents… my mum dropped my sisters off once and came back to them in a dark hallway having been put on the stairs, apparently one of them had dropped a plastic bowl… they were 4 and 6. My parents never left them with my grandparents again, they were absolutely furious. I don’t know why you’d continue to leave your child with someone who treats them badly - and the behaviour with the new born is bordering bizarre and reportable - the tongue thing? 🤢🤢🤢
