The bit with the light switch and the rewire doesn't make sense. Who changed the lightswitches and plug sockets? Did they do it themselves and didn't realise one of the wire terminals was empty? If so, then why didn't they get the electrician to do it since it's the safest way like she kept harping on about. Or was it the electrician who did such a terrible job and missed this massive safety thing in the first place?!?

I'm confused as to why they had to pay to rewire it? if the previous owner did it wrong then the electritions who maddie hired to fix everything should have corrected that while doing the work they were hired to do... not make them pay to rewire everything again. maybe i'm not understanding how this works but I'd be annoyed if I had to pay twice for the work?
I think she paid them to put on the new socket/light switches. Whilst they were doing that they discovered how bad the electrics were. At least that is how I understood it.
She said it was Alex who alerted the electricians to a mini-shock sensation he received from touching the new metal lightswitch. When electrician had a look, turned out there wasn't any ground wire connected. They had to wire the grounding wire in. Doesn't sound like a full rewire as they whole house would be a mess. Still, who messed up? The electrician who connected the new light switch and ignored lack of grounding wire or Maddy and Alex for wiring electrics without knowing wtf they are doing.
I didn’t think they did any of the wiring themselves I thought it was all the previous owners who didn’t wire correctly. Mixed with the electricians putting the new switches in and somehow missing there was no grounding wire, but I they haven’t mentioned anywhere they did any wiring themselves as even Maddie can admit when she’s totally incompetent at something when that something is actually dangerous
her house was £550K which was well over asking, im sure stamp duty pushed the value up to the point they weren’t even saving. Plus to make an offer of that much over the asking and still have £80K of work ‘budgeted’ into the house is wild
there is no way an electrician would install a metal switch and not earth it. which suggests they did that bit themselves. Or that there were earth wires but the main earth on the switch board hadn’t been done, something that an electrician would also check before installing metal switch plates and light fittings. either way it sucks but no actual footage of the lighting being sorted means we have no idea how bad/how much work was actually required.
I'm surprised she 'left' her management, With the amount of terrible companies and products she's shilled for £££. I'm guessing it was the greed of not wanting to pay a percentage to the management? Either that or her contract wasn't extended?
During covid. No stamp duty. Think it finished on 1st july 21. Not sure what happened with electricity. Other than Alex getting a shock and the electricians discovering wasn't earthed, so they decided to get the whole house rewired.
I believe the stamp duty holiday was only for properties bought for less than £500,000
It was no tax on the first £500,000 of the property price, so they would still have got the relief I believe on a significant chunk of their purchase.
Her job is making recipe videos apparently as she always mentions as to why she needs all that storage space and huge fridge. She hasn't released a food video for almost a month and a full recipe one for nearly two. She must have big food plans then with all that cupboard space

I mean she lived in a cottage with a very old - a lot less asthestically pleasing and alot smaller kitchen for years while doing up every other part of the house. So it obviously wasn’t that important then. And the new houses kitchen is already alot bigger and nicer that her previous. If she was honest and said I wanted to do work to it, we were having the new fridge cabinets installed and the fireplace done and thought let’s do it all in one go id respect it. But the insesant “I’m a food blogger it’s necessary” “it’s a requirement if my job” is grating and false. Especially patterned with the whole “live in a place for a while to really find what’s important” “I want to show the realistic common folk reno where not everything is done and perfect straight away” “show a reno online where money isn’t endless and you have to do it slowly” - less than 6 months before you start is not slow nor is it waiting to see what really matters to you - besides actual safety risks electrics, fireplace and maybe windows
P.s. I actually would enjoy it a lot more if she worked with what she had and instead made videos about using what storage you have. How to make the most out of it, what’s essential in a kitchen when you don’t have endless space etc.

That is what other sustainability/minimalist vloggers would do! Maddie can't see how contradictory it is to talk about minimalism and slow living while racing through a reno. She wants the label but doesn't want to live the lifestyle.
Doesn't she have a biggish utility room too? Surely that could be useful storage? If the kitchen was so unsuitable for use for a food blogger, and the living room so small that you plan an extension before you have even moved in, why spend half a mill on that place? If I spent that much I would want to be buying near perfection (for me).

I used to have respect for Pala as a brand but teaming up with an "sustainable" influencer to create a pair of limited edition sunglasses doesn't really seem all that sustainable to me. Also their work in Africa sounds great in theory but I wonder how much of it is actually just white saviourism.
